Strength:

It was the best vehicle I have owned up until about 8,000 miles. After that point it has no good qualities. LEMON,LEMON,LEMON.

Weakness:

It's mpg is terrible 12-15 at the best of times. Constant front end vibration and numerous other problems. See detailed review summary.

This is by far the most disappointing vehicle I have ever owned. I went with a Ford product because of previous experiences with Ford trucks but this vehicle has performed miserably. The problem started with a local Lincoln dealership claiming the front cambers were out of adjustment when the real problem was the Continental tires. From this point around 6,000 miles it has been one disaster after another. I now have 42,000 miles and no resolution to a constant front end vibration not to mention a hesitation that cannot be found. This is on top of an electrical spook that no one is able to track down. Problems such as the radio randomly changing stations to the dash indicators for 2 wheel drive, a4wd, 4 lo and 4 hi randomly highlighting back and forth between the various options while driving. The customer hotline does a good job of not helping after spending 30 minutes to an hour waiting for a customer service rep.

Strength:

Anyone who wants size, comfort, luxury, and dependability, the latter being the strongest advantage, should consider this vehicle. Previous to the Navigator I owned two Expeditions (still have one--1998 Eddie Bower--that has never needed anything but normal maintenance, just can't force myself to sell a perfect vehicle. Options that I like is the most comfortable captain's chair and vehicle size and ride, as well as excellent A/C and the six CD Changer. I drove the Town Car (Cartier) and really could not tell any difference in the quality of "ride". The Navigator has an impressive engine and as much or more power than I require. It is Luxury personified. Although I've not had the Navigator, I traded an excellent 2001 Expedition in and wanted to keep it because it was also a flawless vehicle. But I have bought six vehicles, three in the Ford family, and this class of SUV cannot be beat. I more or less collect cars/SUVs and can testify that one should not touch the Chevrolet line of Trucks. They have many flaws and I traded two new (1999 and 2000) Silverado LTs because I became dissatisfied with them after only a few weeks. And I used to not ever even consider a Ford but my niece's husband convinced me to drive the 1998 Expedition and I was immediately sold. After that, I drove the Navigator and planned to wait and purchase on this year. I'm not sorry so far. I have found no problems and am sure I will not because the vehicles have the same basic motors, design, luxury and quality.

Weakness:

The most unbelievable weakness to me is the power steering. Power assist is improved but cannot come close to the 1998 Expedition's "OLD TIME POWER STEERING". However, I realized that the pundits said the power steering was an unsafe feature...unsafe, I say for those who can't drive. My 1998 Expedition still drives better than my excellent new 2001 Navigator.

I haven't had extensive experience with the Navigator yet. But I am convinced that it will perform at least 90% as well or better than my Expecitions, which were excellent. But, Mr. Ford, if you're listening, BRING BACK MY GOOD "OLE" POWER STEERING, PLEASE. That's what sold me on the 1998 Expedition and brought me back to Ford products. That test drive in Dec. of 1997 with the power steering sold me the Truck. Period. But for having had the Navigator for a few weeks, it's the next best thing to my 1998 Expedition. I love the Navigator for its styling, 32 valves, six CD Changer, Grey Leather, outside Lighting, comfort, keyless entry, Running Boards, durability, and so many other things I have no more time to note. Not to mention the free maintenance. FIVE STAR PLUS!

Similar Products Used:

The Navigator is a Rolls Royce to drive and ride in compared to the Chevy Silverado, Tahoe and 4Runner Limited, which I also own--1999, which is beautiful but rides like a wagon. The 4Runner is an extremely well designed and manufactured vehicle if you're skinny and short. But it's not a heavy duty vehicle. However, it's a great truck for tiny people with smally butts, and it is a much much much better vehicle than the Silverado, which is a pile of trash. I just don't have time to list what is obviously with the Chevy trucks and to tell you about the conplaints I've heard from friends and associatates who are turning away from Chevrolet. GMAC has a big problem. I will relate one incident about my 2000 Silverado: As I was walking from a Grocery Store one day after work and was headed for my New LT, a stranger came up to me and ask me how I liked my truck. I had not had the truck long and told him, "fine, why?" He said he had has numerous 4 Wheel drive problems, transmission problems, electrical problems, wheel bearing problems, and enumerated many other problems that had been related to him by other Silverado owners. They have weak frames and have numerous defects that a good Quality Control Dept. could correct. The next day my engine quit on me, and after that I had 4 Wheel drive problems and I traded the vehicle.

Strength:

Everything. It is the best car I have ever driven. The 2001 LINCOLN NAVIGATOR is the perfect SUV. It is the ideal blend of both power and luxury.

Weakness:

Absolutely nothing

I have driven a lot of cars in the past. I can honestly conclude that I like the 2001 Lincoln Navigator the best.

The Lincoln Navigator has a 32-valve InTech V8 engine that puts out 300 horsepower at 5,000 rpm’s. That’s faster than an expedition. It will go zero to sixty in a mere nine seconds. It is equipped with a control track All Four Wheel Drive System – which means if the rear tires slip, it sends the traction to the front tires. Not only that, but all Navigators come standard with a limited slip axle – which gives you better traction. On our Navigator, we got the 4X4 package, and it handles wonderfully in the winter.
The Navigator also has the most comfortable leather seats I have ever sat in. For the driver and front passenger, you can choose to have heated seats, or air-conditioned. – You can adjust this based on a scale of zero (off) to five (strong) On our Navigator, we also got the Rear Entertainment System, which consists of a 6.8" Retractable Overhead Color LCD, (TV) a VHS VCR, two Wireless Headphones, and Nintendo 64. This is really cool. If you get this package, you can also activate the “surround sound” with the push of a button. This option allows everyone in the car to listen, but only the people in the back to see.
As far as the number of seats, you can either get the seven seater – which consist of both the first and the second row being captain chairs – separated by a roomy island / storage area, and the third row bench, which seats three. Or, you can get an eight seater. This consists of the first row being captain chairs, and the second and third row being a three-seater bench. We had a 00’ Navigator that had the eight seats, and now we have a 01’ Navigator with the seven seats, and I like the seven seater better. However the seven seater does minimize the interior room – if you want to store large objects. For example, if you need to sore stuff, with the 8 seater, you can remove the backbench, and fold (flat) down the second row. But with the seven seater, you can not obtain that much room because the island in the second row does not move.
The Navigator also offers a premium sound system – manufactured by Alpine. One word – Loud. It is no MACH audio, but still, it is loud – if you desire it to be. It also offers a six disk CD changer, which comes in handy if you listen to a variety of CD’s.
The Navigator also has the optional Reverse sensing system. This comes in handy because the Navigator is such a big SUV. What it does is, it helps you back up. The closer you get to an object, the quicker the beeps get.
(An Example) It is like this: beep, beep, beepbeep, beepbeepbeep beepbeepbeepbeep, and then just a steady beeep when you cant go any further with out hitting the object.
Not only this, but you can get a skid plate, which is really helpful when you go off roading, because it protects your fuel tank from being punctured by rocks and what not.
The Navigator also offers a powered moonroof. One word: HUGE. We had one on our 00’ Navigator. This truly was the biggest moonroof I have ever seen, and I have been in / driven a lot of cars.
Lastly, the Navigator offers its own Navigation System. This is very hand, and it is 100% accurate. It has never once stalled, or been incorrect. Not only this, but if you miss your turn, it automatically routs a detour. It can be programmed to a destination, or just be left on to show a map of were you are. Too me, it has proven useful, and worth wile.
In conclusion, I think that the 2001 Lincoln Navigator truly is the best SUV on the market. It has a lot of nice options to it, it has incredible power, and some very nice standard features.

Strength:

Own a 1999 model. Very Powerful (300-hp) engine. Ride smoothness- you could drive at 80-90 mph and feels like your on going 40 mph. Lots of Room, great Alpine stereo system

Weakness:

Since, I use my navigator on a daily basis I get to notice a few problems that other owners have not. I have had my navigator for about 1 year and 3 months and have logged on about 62,000 miles. First of all the driver's heated seat is terrible- went out at around 40k, 2 repairs later and still waiting for the another part. Lots of little rattling and noise comming from the instrument pannel and passenger's seat. Poor construction on Ford part. Too many small plastic pieces that make up front pannel --- should have build at least one piece through out the front. My major problem is that during cold weather the car seems like its about to shut off (rmp surging) in order for it not to stall, I have to hit the gas pedel. This problem started to occur at 20,000 miles--- 3 different service dealers, hundreds of tests, and still no serivce rep. has solved the problem. Makes me wonder why i brought this SUV?

I would recommend alone on its engine and ride smoothness over other SUV's. But, if you get a chance to log on the miles over a short period of time as I did and experience this on going problem that I still have 62,000 miles later makes you want to hold back on purchasing this vehicle.
I hope this problem gets resolved on its 4th visit. ITS A TOSS UP WHEN CHOOSING ......new denali and escalade have come out with a new design and offer a 325 hp engine, might make the choice a bit harder....2003 navigator comes out with a new re-designed model, lower and wider stance, and 325-25- hp engine-----might be worth the wait.

Cadillac Escalade---not a powerful engine for an SUV of that size. Only seating for 5. That is main reason why I chose the navi over the cadi----Navigators engine is superior and rides smoother at highway speed than the cadi

Strength:

Love the comfort, luxury, heated seats and adjustable foot pedals. Performance in 15 inches of snow was terrific. This is actually my second nav, my first was repurchased by Ford as a lemon for faulty suspension, axle and AWD. Even comfortable for 4 hour roadtrips with luggage squeezed in with 3 kids and a portable television. And it is definately a head turner! P.s. Thank you for redesigning the roof to make power sunroof and rear heat/air available

Weakness:

No admirable storage room in rear, there's a gap in the third (rear) seat next the wheel well where my kids lose their toys. Air suspension compressor is noisy ( I had a quieter installed - it's located in the passenger dash) and now at 11K miles the 4x4 got stuck in 4 low and would not come out - same problem I had with my 1998 Nav. The was a $400.00 repair(warranted). I had hoped and prayed that my first fiasco was a fluke - I really like this truck - but what is up with this truck?

I admit I love this truck. enough to spring 45K for another one after 8 months of hell with my first one (In the shop for repairs 68 days out of 8 months) The deciding factor was actually the INCREDIBLE service and attention at our dealer. They even stood up to Ford to support our claim. What I would like to know, who else is having problems with the suspension, 4x4, AWD, axles, etc..?

Strength:

Comfort and Space. Driving pleasure on highways.

Weakness:

Off road capability. All strenghts are offset by the hazard to personal safety due to design failure resulting in left rear wheel tread seperation.

I had purchased a 1998 model lincoln navigator brand new from galadari
automobiles dubai on 23 aug 2000.chassis no.5lmpu28l4wlj 39478
The car has been regularly serviced by the local agent at 1000/5000 kms
and on the 07 dec for 10000 km
During the last service I had enquired if there was a recall on the
tyres.CONTITRAC AT; P255/75 R-17 are fitted on my car.I was informed
that these were ok and not under recall.
On checking the car this morning i have seen three deep cuts on the
outer shell of the left rear tyre. Tread has begun to seperate from the tyre casing.

Also, another tyre has developed side wall ballooning.

Being fully aware of the controvery regarding tyre recall on navigators and Explorers, I believce that there is a fault in the vehicle, combined by poor selection of tyres.

My anxiety is:

1.is the tyre defective?

2.is the basic design of the vehicle wrong?because the transmission
and the fuel tank are on this very side?why is the fuel tank been changed
on the new models?

3.why are you putting our lives and that of our children at peril.especially
those of us who have trusted the ford symbol for reliability and trust
for years?

I would like to dissuade anybody considering a Navigator. Not only is it money wasted, but a hazard to your life and that of your loved ones.
