Model Reviewed: RX300 w/ Nav Pkg & tow

Strength:

Smooth, silent, and responsive powertrain, silky smooth ride, low road/wind noise, comfortable seats, outstanding soundproofing, excellent navigation/audio/climate control, good looks inside out, relatively good handling for an SUV.

Weakness:

Simply a re-badged Toyota Harrier 3.0 that sells for $8k less in Japan, driver memory does not remember mirror position and lumbar support, shallow cupholders that are designed for tuna cans, poor thigh support for rear passengers, headrests hard as rock, uncomfortable armrests for the front seats, so-so JBL sound system (no more Nakamichi), 6CD changer cartridge very hard to load, jerky downshift, seat heater does not shut off automatically, slippery Goodyear Integrity tires (should''ve asked for Bridgestone Dueler.)

Overall a great SUV/tall station wagon for everyday use. Does everything well except serious off-roading. Has the best quality among all luxury SUVs.

Strength:

It''s a Lexus! Great service support and high quality finish in and out.

Weakness:

Small gas tank, inferior cup holders for passengers. E/T feature should stay on when stopping on a long trip.

Engine froze up at time of delivery followed by excessive oil consumption after repair. All fixed by dealer. Now oil seals, front and rear, need replacing which is taking nearly a week. Dealers very cooperative but aggravation persists. Actually we love the vehicle but sometimes have second thoughts. Purchased off lease at 12 months. Pre-certified w/extended warranty.

Similar Products Used:

None, but the new Toyota SUV is almost a clone of the RX 300 but considerably less money.

Model Reviewed: Front Wheel Drive RX300

Strength:

Smooth & quiet ride. Modern, aerodynamic looks. Decent price for a luxury SUV.

Weakness:

Engine; seat positioning could be more comfortable (better arm rests would help); 6 CD in glove-compartment; no STOP, PAUSE or PLAY buttons; no steering wheel controls; rough transmission shifter; small wheels; wheel design; mediocre turning radius; should get safety side curtains; although I don''t plan on going off-roading, I''ve heard it (neither, FWD or 4WD)can''t handle it as well as others.

The style and ergonomics are alright with me (afterall, it is a Lexus), but it''s more the drivetrain that I think could use improvement. There should be a smoother accelerating five-speed transmission (coming in a new, larger, redesigned 2003 model -- search Yahoo.com) and more power would be nice. Handling is OK (you should see & feel for yourself). It''s good in the rain (and tends to skid a lot), but haven''t driven it in snow yet. Also, there should be more safety.

Strength:

Looks Reliability Comfort Smooth ride Attention

Weakness:

Turning radius SUCKS! Paint scrathes way too easy Needs a V8 option Need to add stanard Hyper white or HID Maybe some bigger rims, 17"

Its a lexus, great Toyota engine. I bought mines 6 months ago, my first new car. I just got what i wanted, 4wd, leather, 6 cd changer... i wish they would have HID lights for a non- navigation package... they can at least put Hyper whites instead of just plain regular lights. They should also have a V8 version.... like put a GS430 engine in. But i really love this car... its not really a SUV.

Strength:

The RX handles and rides nice. It is much better than our SC400 ride.

Weakness:

I have found that I do not like the layout of the center console. The seats seem short and the armrest is not really comfortable as having a console arm rest. I would have liked a single CD in the dash as well as the CD in the glove compartment. If you want to hear just one CD, you have to pull out and insert it into the right cartridge. I purchased every option including the chrome wheels except for the navigation package. The front seat should be able to be lowered more than they do. The passenger side needs this function also. I also find the paint scratches easily.

I researched and drove many SUVs. I only needed a small SUV for round town easy of getting things in and out. I do love this Lexus, but have owned LS400 adn SC400. The power in it is okay if not alot of out-of-town driving.

Weakness:

None at this point

I have been researching the Highlander and the RX300 for about 6 months. I made my decision after I test drove both vehicles. The RX, by far, was the superior of the two. When you add all of the accessories to the Highlander the cost is near enough to the RX that the choice is simple. The RX is very luxerious compared to the cheap interior of the Highlander. And the buying experience was the best. The sales people were knowledgable and confident in their product. Each person that I dealt with made it obvious that customer service is the number one priority. The Toyota dealership''s sales people were like vultures.

Strength:

Ride, comfort, economy and practicality especially for those of us (i.e., majority of SUV owners) who don''t really intend to take it off-road.

Weakness:

It''s got a weakness?

We were looking for something very practical, yet comfortable and attractive. This was the vehicle that had it all - unlike the other vehicles we looked at which seemed to lack one of the above 3 ingredients. This is our favorite car of the three late model cars in our garage (1999, 2000 & 2001).

Strength:

~ great V6
~ safety of AWD
~ fit and finish
~ exterior and interior styling
~ non-existent engine noise
~ great seats
~ tasteful wood trim

Weakness:

What can I say? This car was money well spent. The silken revs of the 3.0L V6 delivers optimal performance and is near silent under operation, and offers decent fuel economy. The exterior is attractive and I love the clear lens tail lamps with the navy blue paint, and unique rear spolier, though not functional. The interior is all Lexus. Plush leather, acres of delightful wood trim, throne-like seats, first-class fit and finish, and interesting dash. Great car.

Acura MDX: great power from 3.5L V6, but bulky styling

Infiniti QX4: great 3.5L, but too similar to cheaper Pathfinder
Ford Explorer: excellent new looks, but lacks refinement and reliability
GMC Envoy: great 4.2L I6, but it's a GM product
Toyota Highlander: twin of RX300, though not as luxurious, it's a whole lot cheaper, without sacrificing the Toyota name

Strength:

1. Smoothest ride I've seen on SUV.
2. Great MPG, it will get well over 20 MPG on the highway.
3. Strong engine, 222 horse and 220 foot pounds of torque.
4. Quick acceleration 0-60 in 8.8 seconds, 8.5 with the FWD model.
5. Navigation sytem is THE BEST, I love it, it is touch screen, ten times easier to use than the benz or acura ones.
6. Plenty of room inside, you will never have to be cramped in the back seats in this over sized sedan.
7. Sound SYSTEM ROCKS!

Weakness:

1. Can't let my parents let me drive enough!

WOW! This is a perfect car! I don't think that I can explain how much that I enjoy driving this car, it handles great, breaks amazing, Navigation system is top of the line for any car, rear seats are very room and very nice to sit in even for a 6 foot tall guy like me. The power of this car is perfect I think, 0-60 in 8.8 seconds with 4WD, come on people, that is fast for an SUV. The price isn't to0 bad (I know, I know, 40,000 is alot of money, but when you drive the car, you'll agree, it is worth EVERY penny) , mine is fully loaded, the sticker was 42,000$ and I only paid around 38,000$.
