Strength:

Exterior looks, smooth quiet powerful 4cam V6,very comfortable seats, great night time illumination, lots of rear seat room. Lexus/Toyota reliability and quality. Dealer service is excellent. The big L on the grill!

Weakness:

Stock tires are too car like. Check out those on BMW's X5. Overall look is a bit feminine. NO radio controls on steering wheel. All luxury and no sport.

Excellent vehicle. Luxurious ride and amenities. Unique look. The RX is aging very well. The current model is 4 years old. Proven engine and drivetrain. This vehicle is not for serious off-roaders. If that's what you want, get a Land Rover or the big Lexus LX 470.

Similar Products Used:

Get the BMW X5 if you can afford it. The Acura MDX looks to much like a minivan and currently it must be ordered. Toyota's own Highlander is mechanically identical but doesn't look as good inside or out. However fully loaded it's in the RX300's neighborhood at 34K.

Strength:

Awesome ride! Totally comfortable in either front or back seating. Easy to handle and suprisingly doesn't miss a step in terms of enjoyment even compared to my Boxster S.

Weakness:

CD player setup is fairly annoying and there isnt very much cargo space. Gas tank is pretty small....

I would recommend this car to anyone looking for an awesome SUV for IN CITY DRIVING who want to spend anywhere from 30 to 40k. If you are willing to spend a little more than you would probably do better to purchase an X5 which drives like only a Beamer can and is somewhat bigger. However, the Lexus offers spectacular comfort for a fair price and has high reliabilty ratings. The Dealership has also been extremely helpful and looks as if they are ready to go all the way for me... I also noticed that many ratings on this site claim that the Acura MDX is a better car and that its navigation system is much easier to use. To them i say, "You ARE AN IDIOT, only a complete fool couldn't figure this out!" And anyone who will pay a STARTING price of 36 K for an Acura is just stupid! If you are willing to pay for that car you might as well buy an X5.

Interior, rear seat space, Exterior looks, nice ride

Weakness:

not for those seeking a sported ride

For me the decision was easy it was between the lexus and the bmw x5, however the x5 was about $10000 more. The ride is the lexus is definitely more like that of a luxury car, while the bmw was a sportier ride. The rear seats were more than adequate for three adults. Overall the interior was very plush.

Strength:

Ride, looks, turns really hug the road and the interior is very posh.

Weakness:

We could use a little more room in the cargo area for strollers and groceries.

I love this car. I have two small children and feel very safe with them in this vehicle. The ride is very much like a luxury car not bumpy at all. And my husband and I were amazed how quite it is in the inside. A huge noisy bus was right in front of us and we didn't hear a thing.

I was set on getting the Mercedes ML320 until I found out there were no child locks on the rear doors. After we found this out I looked at the Volvo wagon, the Infiniti QX4, the Land Rover Discovery and the BMW X5. The Lexus was by far the best choice for about the same amount of money.

Model Reviewed: AWD Navi pkg

Strength:

Nice DVD navigation system (better than BMW, Mercedes but Acura's is far better) - the navigation
system is in limited operation mode when the vehicle is in motion which is not really ideal because
a passenger may want to input a route.

Optitron instrumentation display is neat

Ride is very smooth - the 2001 model is more consistent with a typical Lexus ride

Dynamic auto-leveling projector HIDs are superb and offer superior road lighting

The standard Pioneer sound system is quite good

Informative trip computer

Decent ground clearance (7.7 inches) but still doesnt require much effort to get in and out of
the vehicle.

Wood steering wheel has a great feel

Weakness:

Extremely wide turning circle makes normal U-Turns almost impossible!

Center storage compartments are ridiculous! - the storage areas
are inaccessible when the cup holders are being used!! Also the size and
divisions of these compartments are the strangest I've ever seen with lots of wasted space! Due to the
absence of an extended center pillar it is extremely difficult to find space to momentarily place something down!!
Also cup holders for the rear passengers are placed nearer the front seats and not really accessible
from the rear, a ridiculous solitary cup holder is placed underneath the rear seat
- these are ridiculous designs, what were these engineers thinking!!

The "snazz" that has been applied to the rear tailights in the new model is not particularly appealing to me
and looks cheap.

Some interior materials are cheap looking!

No steering wheel audio controls - a glaring ommission in a 40K car! Even my far less expensive
Accord EX-V6 had them!

Paint finish is somewhat inferior and susceptible to streaking easily

In-dash CD is antiquated (using magazines!!), and very poorly located in the glove compartment

Audio system is laborious to use since it is linked to the touch screen

Too much wind noise when sunroof is open, this can be very annoying!

As noted above, the RX has several ergonomic flaws that are too severe to ignore. While the build quality and technology in this vehicle is simply the best out there...the ergonomic aspects can get incredibly frustrating. Overall I would not recommend this vehicle unless at least the storage areas (cup-holders and storage bins etc.) are redesigned.

Strength:

Excellent engine, comfortable interior, smooth all around, well engineered, reliable.

Weakness:

Audio controls silly, smallish cargo area, Ken Shaw Lexus worst dealer in history! Do not go there! Go to Scarborough or anywhere else!

Other than Ken Shaw Lexus, a terrible dealer, the vehicle has peformed as expected. Solid and reliable, smooth and safe, my wife enjoys driving it and feels secure in winter conditions.

She was so upset at Ken Shaw Jr, she claimed she would switch to the BMW in a few years, I told her to just go somewhere else.

A worthy truck, which merits consideration from anyone on the market. (just don;t go to Ken Shaw!)

Strength:

I love the exterior design of this luxury SUV. Hey! It's a "Lexus". The ride is like that of a luxury car, not truckish at all. The seats are extremely comfortable. The entry is very easy, unlike many other SUV's. The drive is also very smooth and quiet. The leather and walnut trim on steering wheel and dash is beautiful. Small enough to get in/out of garage with ease (especially since I am use to driving cars), yet spacious enough on the inside for growing boys who need leg room and comfort. If you need more space, but don't want to sacrafice that luxury car-like feel, this is it!

Weakness:

Major erogonomic flaws! These are all minor things, but can be irritating with everyday use. Examples: cup holders could be much better, no storage, no true console, no good place for cell phone, air vents for rear passengers are not that great (at least they are there - most mid-sized SUV's don't have them at all), and no audio control on steering wheel. The interior of the Acura MDX is much more thought out and includes all these things in their base model. Also, the turn radius is not good.

I have test driven all the SUV's I mentioned above several times each. I kept coming back to both the Lexus RX300 for it's looks and luxury, and the Acura MDX for it's interior design and value. Alot of other reviews mentioned the Toyota Highlander as being as good as the Lexus. I disagree. By the time you pay for all the extras on the Highlander, you might as well have the image and sexy design of the Lexus. Even though the erogonomics may suffer a little, I vote for the Lexus RX300 for it's comfort, luxury car-like feel, great looking exterior, and of course because it is a "LEXUS".

Similar Products Used:

Yukon XL - Too big! I can't fit it in my garage. It's very spacious and kid friendly, though.
ML320 - The interior is beautiful, but that's all. The Lexus drives much smoother, quieter, not as truck-like. You get much more for your money with the Lexus. The exterior of the Lexus is much better looking. The reliablity of the ML320 is bad from what I've read and heard.
Acura MDX - Tough choice! The interior layout and erogonomics of the MDX have the Lexus beat by a long shot. The turn radius is much better. But, the Lexus looks better and is more luxurious. Also, you will have to pay sticker price for the MDX-they won't budge! Lexus dealers are willing to make a much better deal. Both SUV's are great values.

Model Reviewed: /RX300 AWD

Strength:

Excellent handling, quality exterior and interior finish and superb styling. Highly-rated Lexus customer service reputation.

Weakness:

Inferior stock tires. This 40K vehicle should be equipped with quality tires such as Michellins. NAV not standard. Low ground clearance.

Excellent ride and handling. Engine provides sufficient power especially on those long uphill climbs and the acceleration is very smooth. The overall quality on this vehicle is evident by the paint finish, interior wood trims, and leather used; even the sound system is above average. It just does not compare to other SUVs I've test driven and/or owned before.

Its a Lexus, love the look and feel of this car... the shifter was weird at first but now i like it.....leather is really pleasing over all i love this car. Turn a lot of heads... even though i see a lot around, i guess because im only 20, and the new color, Vapor Blue.

Weakness:

well mines is still only 100 miles so i haven't broke thru the engine yet... but the engine isn't too strong, but i will know only after 1,000, but no other problem.....

even tho the car is not a super fancy car or a bling bling car, all the rx owners really love it, all the hate remarks about it i can't see why people feel that way, but thats them, different people different aspect.... just one last thing... I LOVE THIS CAR!!!
