Strength:
Ride, looks, acceleration, snob appeal, heated seats, dual sunroofs, 3rd row seat, cargo room, front headlights, ACE, mostly everything.
Weakness:
Fuel economy, step-up(get the running boards it helps alot), room in the 3rd row isn't something to brag about. The all new Land Rover Discovery is a big improvent. The ride is exceptional as well as acceleration(for a HEAVY SUV). Step-up for rear seat passengers should be planned. Fuel economy is HORRIBLE(12-14 MPG). Aside from those downsides, sound system is great. Looks and snob appeal are pletiful. I highly recomend this car. If you need good fuel economy and a low step-up, buy a RAV-4. GREAT VEHICLE!! |

Lots of Personality,go anywhere no matter what,be the popular guy in the family when it snows.Nice view of traffic ahead around highway driving.
Weakness:
Engine outdated, bad Mileage, rear door access too small for loading kids to car seats, average overall quality, oil leaks since new(just ignore them) This is the most intersting vehicle I have ever owned.Typically I trade a vehicle in less than 2 years of ownership because I get bored, but not until I bought the Discovery.I have 80K miles on it and still the original tires. The only repairs I had so far:a couple light bulbs,1 relay and engine header.Replace pads a couple times but not rotors.Overall is reliable as long as you stay away from the dealers, and that applies to any car make.Dealers like to replace everything and usally create future repair while doing it. This car all it needs is an oil change every 5K-7K miles.Dont repair anything, drive it for 100k to 130K miles and then sell it. I would trade it in for the new DiscoII if they had replace the engine.Even thought the motor is fine,it is a very old outdated Buick design from the 70's or 60's and it's needs to be updated.Maybe a BMW 4.0 would a great job but dont hope anymore since Ford owns LR. I would rather push a LR than drive a Japanese SUV. Similar Products Used: Never had an SUV before, but I own and owned Mercedes 300SL,300CE,Porsche 911C4,Targa,BMW 325IC,M3 and M5. |

4 wheel drive capabilities. Center Locking Differential. Great ride. Good gas mileage for a 4wd suv. Great community of owners that love the trucks and use them!!
Weakness:
Electronic problems. Leaks. Could use a little more power. Better cup holders. I love this truck. It's a tank. Full length steel frame, steel bumpers. We use it for what it was intended for, GOING OFF ROAD. And not dirt roads. We love to camp, and hike, so we purchased the Discovery for taking us to our base camp, and going from there. But after experiencing what this thing can do, we take almost every chance we get to use it. We've driving up 4000ft mountains, crossed 2-3' deep rivers, lots of mud, etc. All Land Rovers have strange mechanical problems, but they seem to lessen if the truck is abused a little. They do not make good mall cruisers, or soccer transporters. The gas milage is great for such a heavy vehicle, and also being in permanent 4 wheel drive. It handles well for it's height as well. Strength:
High seating and great views; tough leather seating that seems to take abuse; great stereo; armrest is fun; two sunroofs work well; my 3 1/2 year old daughter loves the jump seat with the private headset stereo; lots of room for all my samples and junk when I travel; great side mirrors to see other vehicles; air shocks have easily handled the excessive weight that my samples represent. My Volvo was riding low when loaded.
Weakness:
poor gas mileage; needs more horsepower; needs better brakes; needs more soundproofing for road noise; needs to be wider in the seat for my big butt; needs window airbags for safety; needs to widen the handrails so I can get my hand in; should make the wood trim standard on the deluxe model; should make the rubber mats standard on the luxury model; IT'S TIME FOR FORD/LAND ROVER TO OFFER THE FREE MAINTENANCE THAT AUDI OFFERS AND EXTEND THE WARRANTY TO 70,000 MILES!!! I am a traveling salesman who covers the 9 Southeast states. So I had the luxury to visit all the L/R dealerships. After much dealership searching and internet searches, I found a 2000 SE7 on Auto Trader for under $25,000! Loaded with all the toys. Reason: high mileage - 58,000! but since I was driving a Volvo 850 with 240,000 miles, what's 58,000 miles? I have had it 3.5 months, put 12,000 miles on it and I am still happy. When I get done with this tank, I'll put 250,000 miles on this beast. Quick Review- front rotors and all four disc pads shot - $900 with an oil change; 60,000 mile service - $700 including front seal replacement & idler belt wheel; 2 more oil changes. Mileage runs between 14.1 - 17.2! Needs more horsepower for passing and better brakes for quicker stops. Goodyear Wrangler HP tires SUCK! They are noisy and square easily. Michelins will solve that. Stereo is awesome and the subwoofer is too boomy. Jump seats in back don't come down without a struggle. I will try to get L/D Buckhead to fix them tomorrow. All the controls work so I guess that I got one of the units made after FORD transferred in a new Land Rover plant manager in 2000. Land Rover Greenville told me that this manager reduced defects by 50% in 6 weeks! Based on all the wide variation in experiences listed here, it looks like that was the first thing that BMW should have done. Similar Products Used: Ford Explorer, Expedition; Toyota Highlander. |

Strength:
Offroad capability - Un-bee-leev-able, I didn't think it was possible for a vehicle to do some of the things I've done in mine. Hill Descent Control (HDC) is remarkable once you learn to trust it. Comfort - despite being a truck, it is remarkably comfortable - the seats are more comfortable then any car I've driven in (suspension may be a bit stiff for some - but then don't get a 4X4). Climate control - cools/heats to the selected temperature quickly and keeps it constant at the selection. Visability - you don't appreciate how good it is until you get into a lower/smaller car (see exception above). Design - Unmistakable (not like the other generic rubbish you see around). Sound system - Easy to use with great acoustics.
Weakness:
Keyless entry - The range on mine sucks. Cupholders - Blocks access to the radio when/if you can use it. Fuel economy - Nonexistant (once again if this is a concern don't get a 4X4). Accessability - shorter people may find the ground clearance a bit much (a handle bar would be a good idea especially for the passengers). I'm 6ft and haven't found either leg room or accesabilty to be to much of a problem (front and rear), although some tall and short passengers have grumbled about both). One touch up on the electric windows would be nice. Cleaning the roof is a bit of a mission. All round fantastic experience. The Landie is a pleasure to drive on road and unbeatable offroad. It is the most comfortable car I have driven in - I've taken a couple of 12+ hour trips and arrived without any of the usual aches and cramps. The ACS is amazing - the car has never felt like it was going to roll (I've tried). The dealership has been great - nothing but friendly and professional. The placement of some of the switches/controls was awkward at first but you get used to them soon enough. Visability is great although you do sit up too high to see some overhead traffic lights change when you are stopped at an intersection. Parking has been a pleasure, I thought with an SUV it would be difficult, but despite its appearance the Disco will fit comfotably in a compact car space - I live in Texas though so our idea of "compact" may be slightly skewed. Power is more than adequate for on road driving - although it does need to change down to maintain its speed (80mph) on protracted hill climbs. Overall I am more than satisfied with my car. Strength:
Very solid...goes in a straight line very well...very heavy so it will get the best of most other cars in an accident...distinctive styling...low gear grunt...very high "cool" factor...great stereo (with CD changer)...utilitarian controls and features (no fancy schmancy buttons and knobs and useless features)...legendary offroad heritage...reliability ???? (I had more problems with my previous car, a Honda)
Weakness:
Terrible engine (I always dread having to pass another car on a hill)...terrible gas milage (approx. 250 city miles to the tank)...smallish back seat area (passengers find it difficult to get in and out and never have enough leg room)...very heavy (the engine struggles to lug around 2 tons of vehicle)...small cargo area in back...horribly low upper windshield line (I have to duck down sometimes to see stop lights)...dismal resale value...steering on the highway is a constant battle, especially on windy days In the 3 years I've leased my Discovery, I've had very few problems. As it has only 34,000 miles, some of my praise might be be a little premature, but still, all in all, the car has been a reliable performer. The only unscheduled service was a check for an early leak around the parking brake drum. To this day, I still see drips of oil/fluid on the undercarriage. I've been told that leaks and drips are inevitable with Land Rovers and that I should just accept it. Similar Products Used: none |

Strength:
Feels right at home both in the Sahara desert and the Opera theatre parking lot. You can either wear military survial gear or the black tie dinner jacket and not feel out of place. Solid feel when driving on concrete or mud.
Weakness:
Extremely poor reliability and expensive repair bills. Would not recommend buying used Rovers. As soon as the warranty runs out, be prepared to pay for heavy repair bills. By 45,000 miles, Every small motor got replaced: fuel pump, water pump, steering wheel pump, window motors. Also, leaking gaskets, worn camshaft and timer, coolant seals and hoses, rear light bulbs due to corrosion. All this despite rigorous dealer maintenance every 7,000 miles. I am holding my breath for the radiator, the main engine and the transmission to give way next! What a pity. Too bad the Brits will never overcome their notorious engineering reputation. BMW should be relieved to have dumped Rover to Ford. I suspect that Ford parts will eventually take over the Land Rover vehicles but that does not necessarily mean improved reliability. Best capable off-road SUV in its price range, including its brother model Defender which offers similar ability but costs more and is less civilized. British style and wit, including eccentricities. This vehicle definitely has soul and character compared to its bland soul-less global competitors. Similar Products Used: Too bad this will be my first and last Land Rover. If only these capable vehicles with character would be more reliable. I would never go on extended expeditions in Land Rovers. You may travel easily |

Discovery
Strength:
The Discovery, like all Land Rovers, is a head turner. The style is distinctive and rugged. There is no other vehicle like it. There is just something cool about owning a Rover. Many auto manufacturers are making SUVs that are very car-like. The Land Rover is a true truck. I was rear ended in my Rover by a sedan going approximately 45 mph. The impact was mild to moderate. The passenger compartment was not compromised in the least. This vehicle was designed for slow, meandering offroad work. And in this area it excels. Despite some mechanical quirks, the vehicle has never let me down.
Weakness:
Although the interior design is always improving, some interior parts of my 98 Discovery seem cheap. However, I stuck my head into a 2002 Series II recently and saw a big improvement. Although the Discovery is pushed by a V8, it seems underpowered, especially in highway driving scenarios. And of course, there are the mechanical quirks that seem to haunt all British vehicles. I have learned to ignore warning lights which turn on and off at whim. Also, I find it less expensive to get a good oil remover for my garage floor than to pay my mechanics to fight the unwinnable battle against "controlled seepage". The seals in these cars are horrid. They will leak from day one. Of course, gas mileage is bad, as is the case for most big SUVs. Cargo space is quite limited, this aint no Tahoe. Leg room for backseat passengers is non-existent. (Although this has been improved in the Series II) The manufacturer supplied trailer hitch begins to rust after the first winter of driving. My ''98 lacks the bells and whistles found in similarly priced SUVs,eg, digital compass, outside temperature etc, etc. If you can lease this vehicle so that it is always under warranty, go for it!!! These vehicles are Give me the body style of a Land Rover and the dependability of a Japanese or American SUV and you would have, in my opinion, the ultimate vehicle. I am currently on my second Discovery and after my last $3,500 service bill, I''m wondering if its not time to visit the Toyota dealer. I have a love hate relationship with my Discovery. If you buy one, you will dicover what I mean. Similar Products Used: Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee, GMC Jimmy, GMC Envoy, GMC Yukon. |

Strength:
V8. Torque. Off-road capabilities. On-road handling. Quiet cabin. Comfy seats all around. Nice steering column. Awesome view(both driver and passengers). Roomy interior. Styling. 12-speaker Alpine stereo system w/ 6disc changer. Basically, the interior is plush!!! Solid ride. All SE/SE7 model''s are pretty much fully loaded. Price.
Weakness:
Gas mileage but that''s expected and is competitive with every V6 out there. Stiff ride but more than bareable. Loose gas pedal. Barely fits in my garage(can''t park in garage if I have ski racks). Factory safety recall within a month of purchase(took less than a day to fix). Needs more horsepower. Rear cargo not wide enough to fit golf bag(has to be diagonal). No GPS/DVD option available in the US yet. Weak subwoofer(too small to produce sufficient bass). CD changer is hard to access. Could use couple more gauges. These aren''t really weaknesses, just personal pickyness. So far, I am very satisfied with my Disco II. I will have to admit that I was a bit worried about buying a Land Rover because of hearing owners talk about having lot of problems. I think having BMW redesign the Disco was a huge factor for me in buying this off-road beast. I''ve done countless hours of research for the perfect SUV for around $40K and the Disco II stuck out like a sore thumb. You just can''t find a better import SUV unless you go with Japanese but they all seem to slowly fall apart after you take it off-road the first time. Land Rover has definitely refined every aspect of this truck though it could use more horsepower for on-road driving. Both the interior and exterior is much more than what I''ve expected for a $40K SUV. The stock 18inch rims are gorgeous and the styling turns head. The stereo is above average but could use a Bazooka tube. ACE is an amazing feature. My Disco handles better than my Mercedes sedan which you wouldn''t expect from a tall truck. I''ve read other''s reviews on how they dislike their LR service department, but I would have to say my dealership offers superior customer service. It''s even better than Mercedes-Benz. They cater to all your needs, maybe because it''s under warranty. All you have to do is ask! If you want a SUV that not everyone and their moms own, buy a Land Rover.
