Build quality.

Have had only problems. nothing serious except it was overheating due to "intake manifold" problems and had to go into the shop for repairs the same day. That is when I discovered(no pun intended) that the manufacturers warranty that you get with new vehicles does not cover loaner vehicles when the SUV is getting essential repairs. According to Land Rover america the importers, the only thing that is covered is the repair. If a New car that you have just bought gets serious problems as soon as you have paid for it and spends months or longer in the shop getting repaired, you have to rent your own car. They recommend that when you buy a new vehicle you also buy additional warranty at the same time from the dealer, that would cover loaner vehicles when you SUV is being repaired. That is BS. I would never buy a land Rover product again.

Looks nice. Rear window defroster, keeps hands warm when pushing. Heated seats, keeps butt warm when waiting for a tow truck.

Weakness:

No power 190hp, some V6s' will give more power. Terible gas millage, 10 Mpg. Must use high octane, more $$$. Parts are over priced, if you can find them. Rides teribble. Greese fittings fall out??? What's up with that. Truck rattles at high speed. Leaks fluids from all points Back window leaks when it rains.

It seamed to be a good deal, and thought it was a good looking truck. Thought it could haul a heavy load, a boat.

EVERYTHING (gas mileage, power, stereo unless it's the Harmon Kardon, visibilty, and mostly dependability!)

Would Not advice anyone to buy it! I had a 2002 SE7 that I had for 8 months and I think I only got to drive it 1 month total. This thing stayed in the shop with major mechanical problems. I never took it off the pavement. First the front diff went out, then the front transfer case and finally the transmission. My dealership gave me a good deal on a 2003 so I traded and now it's happening again! It has been in the shop 4 times and I have only had it for 1 and a half months. This time it has been the cruise control each time but i am just disgusted with land Rover. The Brits have had a bad name in the Auto Industry but I thought that was cleared up. I hope now that Ford has it's hands in the pot Old Landie will shape up but as for me I amd moving on over to the Japs and trading it for a new Lexus GX470 SUV in January.

Looks, looks, and finally looks.

Weakness:

It leaks power steering fluid and oil. Rocker arms replaced, steering gear box replaced, Mechanical problems, cracks in rubber around windows. Just to many things to list.

I purchased this vehicle seven months ago from an in-law. All the 7500 mile services were performed, and I thought I was getting a wonderful deal. This vehicle only had 50,000 miles on it when I purchased it. I have dropped over $2500 on it since then with a list of problems to long to list. I will never own a Disco again. I have since purchased an Inf. Qx4, and love it.

Strength:

Great Heated Seats and Windows. Great View above most cars/trucks. Plenty of space inside for moving stuff. Cool appeal. People think this vehicle is much more expensive than it is.

Weakness:

Here are a few things I would do differently. Use a different key/remote combo. The key is a little large. Increase the space for the handholds. The space is way too small. I can not get my whole hand through. The Gas consumption is sort of a bummer. Some how do something about that. 12-14 MPG is pretty low. Thats it so far

This thing is sweet. We drove it up in the mountains this past weekend and it worked great. The steering is nice and tight, unlike many SUVs. The Disco feels like your driving a tank, but not in a bad way. We used it to move some funiture and there was a ton of space, much more than my previous Jeep Grand Cherokee. Very Easy to find in a parking lot. There just doesn't seem to be a ton of these on the road so they are always easy to spot in a parking lot.

Strength:

Heated windshield, visibility, Handling in bad weather

Weakness:

Key and a useless trailer hitch.

This thing was made for Alaska, We have had it for over 6 months and I can't get my wife out of it. It handles like my Corvette. Hands on the wheel and go. It has plenty of power with the 4.6 L engine. But the best news is that it goes anywhere. And when the roads get wet, snow and ice and just plane bad the Discovery handles even better. When the snow and ice stick to the windows that great heated windshield is just the thing for getting us through. The only thing we dislike is the key. When we turn on the truck we are always locking the doors and setting off the horn. I fixed that and had a normal key made. We travel 60 miles a day with it and it is by far the best thing for us here where the roads are so bad and the moose so big. I just wish I could use my trailer hitch. This is at present the only useless piece on the truck. Only because there is no way to wire it for a trailer with out voiding the warranty. They say they will have the wiring kits soon but that was six months ago. I'm not holding my breath. So I keep the GMC to pull the boat.

Looks. There's nothing better. Off road capability.

Weakness:

Gas mileage. Could use a few more horses.

After reading some of the reviews, I was skeptical about this car especially regarding its workmanship. After about 1000 miles this weekend, I must say I am certainly impressed! The ride is great for such a large SUV, and the cargo room is as good as I have seen. The car felt great at 80-85 mph, stable, with only a little road noise -- none more than I expected. The pickup, which seems to be one of the car's weaknesses (along with gas mileage), was certainly adequate although it could use a few more horses. All in all, a very pleasant surprise, and a great car to drive.

Strength:

Styling. I said it in my first review and I'll say it again. NOTHING gets looks and reactions like a LR. Can go ANYWHERE and do it with class. It has a very good driving position. You sit high in it so you can see everything and there are virtually no blindspots due to all the large windows. Drove a Grande Cherokee and felt like I was riding in a tomb. Blindspots everywhere and seating position is low. The seats practically sit on the floor with high door panels. In the Disco, low door panels, high seating position means you can see everything.

Weakness:

Backseat could use more legroom. It is a bit on the expensive side if you need to fix or buy parts for. The windshield could be a little taller. It's sometimes a bit annoying when you can't see stop lights unless you bend over a bit. LR fixed the problem in the new Discos. I noted fuel economy in my last review. Not going to note it anymore. I had a Jeep Grande Cherokee for 7 days and that thing beats my Disco hands down for poor fuel econ. After a few off-roading trips, I noticed that this things fuel econ is actually pretty good. If you actually compare, a lot of the other companies are not that much better. In fact, quite a few are around the same specs (or worse) and they're mostly 2 wheel drive. Don't always believe what manufacturers quote as expected fuel mileage. Talk to people who own one and find out because my experience is that manfacturers quote optimum fuel econ. My Disco has actually been about dead on to a bit better than expected but I've driven others where mileage is A LOT worse than what specs say.

This is an update to a review I wrote about my 98 Disco I purchased in Jan 2001. It's coming up on 2 years and I'm still very impressed with this truck, even after my warranty ran out in Feb of this year. I've taken this thing far off-road (ie. driven through rivers, mud bogs, rock beds) and then back again and have been totally impressed by its ability to handle the rough stuff (climbs like a goat!) and yet is very well mannered once back on ashphalt. Engine is quiet as a mouse after beating the crap out of it in mud and rock. Took me a week to get all the mud out of it but wouldn't dream of doing it in any other vehicle. There is a bit of a body roll on these older Discos but the new ones fix that with their ACE system. The body roll still isn't any worse than any other truck I've driven but the big thing to note is that LR feel like they're stuck to the ground. There's a very solid feel to it. The other trucks I've driven have a lot of power steering and handling feels very "light". Being able to turn the steering wheel with a finger isn't a positive thing in my opinion. You want a bit of feel, especially off-roading. With LR, you can "feel" the road and the truck feels very surefooted. Customer Service has been very imressive. Not sure what others are experiencing, but my dealer has been very good with me. Warranty ran out in Feb of this year but I found some small rust spots on the back door wheelwell area on both sides a month ago. In most cases, telling a dealer you have rust on a 5 year old vehicle and they'll tell you too bad but I talked to LR about it and they offered to pay to have it fixed. That's on a 5 year old truck with warranty that ran out 6 months ago! Overall, I'm very happy with my LR. The only thing I can say is that do your research. There are a lot of vehicles out there that offer 4WD capability in a car form. Don't buy a big SUV if all you're going to do is drive to the mall or take the kids to soccer practice. It's a waste of money. If it's an image thing you want, nothing comes free. You can't have the image and not expect to pay for it. You're buying something (especially LR) that was built for a specific purpose. Oh yea, and don't listen to people who write reviews about a vehicle they don't own or have never driven for an extended period of time.
