Strength:

Very distinctive look. Great controls, once you get used to them. Capable on and off road. Built to last. Very sturdy. Poeple think it is really expensive. Heavy, safe. Excellent view from inside--front and back seats. Lots of room with seats folded down. Good quality leather. Good safety features (air bags, seatbelt pre-tensioners, engine cutoff, strong frame, etc.). Over-engineered for on road use--this is a good thing. There are no cheap mechanical parts on this vehicle. Safest vehicle in rollovers (I know this for a fact...) Service Department is like the Mercedes dealership--good! Great brakes. Great traction control. This vehicle never slides in any direction. Does not feel top-heavy. Seats very comfortable. A/C and Heater do the job, but I would get the rear air if I could. Stereo (Harmon Kardon, or whatever) is really good at all volume levels. CD changer great. Great towing power for large trailers and boats. Tight turning circle. Will roll over anything--curbs, potholes, tires in the road, etc.

Weakness:

Gas guzzler, even by SUV standards. Repairs are inconvenient unless a dealer is in your home town. SES light comes on so often I now ignore it; this is a common complaint. Everything is odd sized--lights, windshield wipers, tires, lug nuts, etc. Buy 5 of whatever you need if you are lucky enough to find it. Wind noise at highway speeds is noticeable; a handsfree cellphone does not work well with the noise. Lack of horsepower (but balanced with good torque). It has torque like a diesel, and no one ever accused a diesel of being peppy, so who cares... Harsh ride compared with other luxury SUVs. Horrible back doors over rear wheels--hard to get in and out. Sunroofs will rattle with alot of use, but dealer can fix easily. Don't ever lose your key--$200. Suede on doors rips easily. Neat, pebbly rubber on flat srufaces collects dust and everything else, and is nearly impossible to clean. Very tall--watch clearance at airport parking garages. Front leg room is perfect for me (5'10"), but tall (over 6'4" or so)people lack sufficient leg room.

Good vehicle with quirks--some good, some bad. I would not buy another one new; better to buy one that has been tested for a year or so. I drive approximately 30,000 miles per year in mine. This is a car I could easily keep for 10 years and it would still be stylish and probably work, though with increasing maintenance. The Disco. II has the feel of an off-road vehicle that has been adapted for onroad use, and not vice-versa. People should be aware of this when they buy it and not gripe so much about ride quality, horsepower, fuel economy, etc. (see other posts). This is like a really fancied-up Brittish Jeep, and should not be compared with Tahoes, Expeditions, Acura MDX, Lexus RX 300 and the like that were based on designs for on-road use and then minimally adapted to off-road use. For instance, some wonder why the window controls are on the console instead of the doors. That is so the controls are not exposed to the weather when the doors are open. Some wonder why the windows have metal frames connected to the door instead of having a bare window with a big, foam gasket connected to the body. This keeps wind and water out of the window and adds roof structure. You can't put a cellular antenna on the roof because it isn't metal. Why? So the roof is lighter and the center of gravity is lower. Ditto for the hood. This is an engineer's car. Maybe quirky, maybe odd, but always well-thought out. Function precedes form in this vehicle.

NEVER AGAIN!!!!! My 2003 has been in the shop for 3 months. YUP 3 months. After a serious accident.. I was told an I quote"Getting parts for Land Rovers has been a problem for about 2 years". I would say so. It is a JOKE that a new car can't even get parts an the attitude is "oh well"... Any one thinking of buying one SERIOUSLY think again. Why would anyone buy something you can't get parts for an for this price .My new car has spent more time "trying" to be fixed then I have had it..Oh well live an learn. I would NEVER buy another Land Rover again in fact you couldn't give one to me free..

Strength:

Surefooted, great in adverse weather conditions. Nice asthetically inside and out.

Weakness:

Lacks power, poor gas mileage, quirky

Well just sold my first Disco and bought a newer Dico II. I must be a gluten for punishment I guess. I liked my Disco 1 but did experience a variety of problems such as SRS light and Check Engine light coming on all the time for stupid reasons. I did enjoy how the truck drove and I felt extremely safe in adverse conditions. I just picked up my new Disco 2 and already I think I am in for it since the familiar check engine light came on after 20 minutes of driving. Its a good thing this thing is under warranty!! If you dont mind frequent visits to your friendly Rover dealer, its a fun truck to drive. Goes anywhere and quite surefooted on and off the road. Just make sure you get a warranty.

Strength:

Excellent off-road cababilities, good looking, comfortable seats, heated seats, lots of leg room, good head room for passengers in rear, the most comforable off-road ride of any 4 X 4 I have been in.

Weakness:

Quirky radio, rear doors don't open wide enough

After reading all of the negative posts on the various websites, I decided to purchase a Land Rover Discovery Series II. Contrary to all of the negative posts, I have found the Discovery to be a real gem, and the dealership is by far the most excellent service department I have ever dealt with. Yes, the vehicle has had issues with door locks sticking (dealer replaced servo's), the SES light came on(new O2 sensor required), tail light fell out went I hit a massive bump (dealer fixed at no charge), the radio some times has a mind of it's own. But when I am off-roading with the modified 4X4's and they are spinning their tires the Disco, just walks on by them.

Strength:

Looks good, good off road capabilities, good climate control.

Weakness:

Door window frames not installed properly. Super Gas Guzzler, and no power Seat position controls impossible to find All over the place on the highway Needed tow hitch wiring, out of stock for 6 months No turning radius, I need three manuevers to get out of my driveway. Ergonomic are hurrendous. Weatherband missing from the radio Needed brakes after 20,000 miles of highway driving. Check Engine Light on

If you want snob appeal, thats all the Discovery is good for. Its a piece, of over rated, over priced English crap. I hope some German automaker buyes the company.

Bend over, it's a Rover! Is the most important fact to remember of this review with the exception of DO NOT buy one of these vehicles. I will document the history which brings me to the belief that the three problems with Rovers are, they are "Over rated, Over priced, and Over here". My adventure begins February 18, 2000 when I took delivery of a Land Rover 2000 Discovery Series II. At just over $50K it is fair to say I had every option but two. Two weeks later it was returned for a 1200 mile oil change to prepare the vehicle for a long range brake-in trip. At this time my Service Technician advise me he would have to keep the vehicle for two recalls, one for the transmission and one for the ACE system. To the credit of my dealership my TA gave me a loaner knowing I was traveling from Portland, OR to Tucson, AZ and back. A quick brakedown of the problems I had is: Active Cornering Enhancement System pipe leak Mileage 1237 Transmission Fluid leak Mileage 1237 Winch Cover screws fall out Mileage 1237 Sunroof trim is distorted Mileage 1237 Driver window faulty regulator and motor Mileage 2159 Tail door is leaking water Mileage 6563 Tail door won’t stay open Mileage 6563 Tail door rear seal fails is leaking water Mileage 9858 Fan belt replaced –they crack all of the time Mileage 9858 Right front fender trim is loose, hanging off Mileage 11739 Tail door Strap is falling down Mileage 11968 Upper tail light bulbs burnt out R & L side Mileage 14040 ZF Transmission failure replaced on the road Mileage 16224 Two Exhaust studs broke off during Transmission Mileage 16224 Replacement Indicator madness 1. Red temperature light goes on when fording in as little as 6 inches of water. 2. Green Mode indicator “M&S” flashing on startup many occurrences. 3. Domes lights (all 3) fail on cold mornings At this point I arranged to speak with Eric Deck, at the time, the regional factory rep. We came to an understanding Land Rover would provide an additional 12 months and 12,000 miles protection on the drive train only. Rover has something they call ‘Good Faith’ in which a dealer can repair anything on a vehicle gratis, a condition for the Ford coverage would be to remove my VIN from the post warranty ‘Good Faith’ list. This was to go into effect when Ford Motor Co. issued Extended Warranty coverage. However when Ford finally offered this coverage Land Rover had no knowledge of their offer to extend my coverage. The last two recalls came as a package and go well together, one for the ‘Throttle Cable Sticking, the other for Inappropriate ABS Activation. Like many before me I came not stress well enough the importance of looking elsewhere for dependable, well engineered 4x4 vehicles. Although I have suggested Land Rover practice truth in advertising by renaming the vehicle Disappointment Series II, to date they have not. I’m still waiting for Eric Deck to return my calls, as Land Rover Maryland said he would. This may be something passed from one generation to the next.

Strength:

Looked cool. Fun to drive when it worked, but... Don't walk away from LandRover, run.

Weakness:

Here are some of the problems we encountered: **In first week** 1. Sun visors would hit us in the head, never fixed. 2. Door locks broken. Fixed. 3. Center console cracked. Passenger door interior fell off. Fixed. 4. Engine would disengage at random speeds above 50 MPH, usually when accelerating. Fixed after 8 times in the shop and 41 days in the shop. 5a. Passenger window off track. Fixed. **After first week** 5b. Driver window off track. Fixed (repeatedly). 5c. Back seat (dr. side) window off track. Fixed. 6. Water leak. Never fixed. 7. O2 sensor light came on. Never fixed; brought in over 15 times, for over 45 days. 8. Transmission replaced because car running very rough, stalling. Didn’t fix. 9. Engine replaced for same reason. Fixed, but problem came back repeatedly. 10. Air intake problem. Fixed. 11. Repeatedly replaced spark plugs (never fixed rough running problem). 12. Computer malfunctions. Never solved problem for more than a few days. 13. Alarm would go off for no reason. Could not be disabled. 14. Key would sometimes not work. Intermittent; never fixed. 15. Clicker would sometimes not work. Intermittent; never fixed. 16. Car would sometimes not start. Intermittent; never fixed. 17. Turn signal broken. Fixed. 18. Differential fluid leak. Fixed. 19. Oil leak, smoking. (traded car in--didn’t try to fix)

The car looked cool and was big. In the 2 years and 10 months we owned it, it was in the shop 161 days (5+ months). It cost $31,000 to fix problems not covered by warranty. Many problems were never fixed. We tried multiple dealers and even 2 independents. Rental cars were a huge expense. The Discovery was always in for 3-5 days. Gas very expensive (14MPG at best and super). Everything expensive--windshield cost over $1000 when it was cracked (repeatedly). Service was 2x MBZ or and 3x BMW, and more often than either. LandRover HQ was terrible to deal with--rude, condescending. Even though many problems recurred and were not fixed in 3 tries, they told me I would have to sue and that they had much better lawyers than I could afford--LandRover does not make lemons. We ended our LandRover hell when, on our way home after picking up our Discovery from the shop for the umpteenth time, smoke started pouring out from under the hood. Instead of driving home, we drove straight to the nearest BMW dealership. When we got there, we parked the stupid thing as far as possible from the showroom, hoping that by the time we got to trade it in, the smoke would be gone. They offered us $9,000 for it, which we accepted. We were just happy not to have to tow it home.

The hydraulic step to get into the back and it's good looking.

Weakness:

Brakes, tire wear, brakes, electrical systems, stopping in snow/rain, ergonomics (put cup in holder and it blocks the heat and stereo controls), sound system stinks, very small inside and hard to get into, gas mileage, car is extremely noisy on the highway, etc...

What a piece of crap!!!!! Electrical problems from day one; discovered when my wife and child were almost rear ended by a semi because of a complete lack of brake lights. I could go on.... Needed 4 brake pads and 2 tires at 20,000 miles. Needed all around brakes, rotors and tires at 34,000 miles. Land Rover feels this is normal!?!? I wouldn't wish this vehicle on my worst enemy (not even my mother-in-law). Thousands in repairs.

Weakness:

Once you hit 100,000 miles in one of these you better get a second or third job, or make really good friends with the dealership mechanics. Everything that can break...breaks, costing you thousands.

Hunk of crap. I strongly urge anyone who is thinking of buying one to reconsider. Land Rover is very bad with electronics, their spare parts cost an arm and a leg, the new electronic keys work about 20% of the time, car falls apart. I would not let my worst enemy drive through the desert with one of these unreliable machines.
