Cramped Back Seat Gas Guzzler (but who cares, it's a Land Rover) I really loved this vehicle. I had no problems with it during the 3 years of my lease. The service team at Land Rover Princeton was excellent. At lease-end, the inspection and turn-in process was very smooth. I rue the day I decided to buy my Jeep Grand Cherokee. I can hadly wait until my lease is up so I can RUN to the nearest Land Rover dealer and get into another Discovery II Similar Products Used: Jeep Grand Cherokee Cadillac Escalade |

Strength:
Built to go anywhere. Classic body lines. Very reliable drive train. Neat gadgets. Not boring to drive. We love it.
Weakness:
rust bubbles under rubber around alpine lights, nagging electronic problems (my srs light is on), gas mileage, All minor issues. Great truck. AWESOME value. I bought it for my wife. I have an 89 Rangie that I love with over 220k so I liked the fact that the 94 has the same engine/trans/chassis etc as the proven 89. The truck has 115k on it but has been fully dealer maintained and the books to prove it. Oil changes are very important in aluminum blocks!! Of course the headliner is sagging. The cloth interior is comfortable and is in near perfect condition, compared to many leather interiors Discos Ive looked at. Of course they are mules offroad, but you will need work on them if you "wheel". I do not plan on abusing this one, but my Rangie has taken tons of Hard off road abuse and has never left me stranded in 4yrs. Overall, I would only recommend a used high mileage Disco/RRC to someone that enjoys working on cars, or doesnt mind spending money. They can be costly to repair if you pay someone else. Trust me this is an amazing vehicle off road. One more thing, if you dont want to leak a bit of oil on your driveway, get a toyota!! Strength:
Will flat out destroy any other factory off-roader off road. Reasonable price.
Weakness:
Parts are pricey. Would rather have basic interior and pay less-the "all gussied up for the suburbanites" adds substantially to the price. Mostly bought by status seekers. An off-road animal. Cramped, rough riding and horrible ON the road. All the very qualities that make it awesome off-road are gonna come at the expense of on-road conveinience. How could all you complaining owners not realize this during your shopping/buying process? Any child who has played with a toy car understands that shorter, narrower, and taller means it's gonna tip over easier, ride like hell and handle erratically on the pavement. Gas mileage Wipers Rear doors Service appointments Rear seat room I feel like a few other Rover owners out there who think the discovery II is not being treated fairly. I am 20 and this car was a present after my horrible BMW was wrecked. Since I have owned the car (Christmas 2001) the car has been in 3 times for unsheduled service. Each time the repairs were covered by the factory warranty. Other than that this car has been great, it is wonderful offroad, big, but not too big, and rides decently with the ACE package (A MUST!!). The service in Chattanooga, Alpharetta, and Charlotte have all been outstanding, and I would assume it is this good elsewhere. There are a few drawbacks, mine gets 8-10 mpg because of the safari rack, and parts are expensive and the wait to bring the car in for service is annoying. If you can afford one and want to stand out from all the other SUV drivers out there, at least give the Discovery a test drive. It is NOT for everyone, but its been a great car for me. gas guzzler history of poor reliability Is my Landrover cursed? I bought a new 2003 Disco SE. After driving it for less a month I hit a deer less than a mile from my house. Memorial Day weekend my wife and I decided to drive to Montreal for the weekend. It's about a 40 mile trip from New Jersey. In spike of all the bags things I read about Discos, I assumned that wiht all the changed that were made to the new models and the fact that it was a new vehicle, going to Montreal would not be a problem. I was wrong. I think the trasnmission is finished. The SUV has less than 2,000 miles. Similar Products Used: none |

Weakness:
Fuel comsuption (buy shares in Shell) Can suffer from mechanicals I have been driving this vehicle since new but I have been moved to write this review in response to the large number of unfavorable reviews which the Disco has received. I own a Series 1.5 petrol and I would say that while my ownership of the vehicle has not been without problems it has, on the whole been very favorable. I will start with the actual characteristics of the vehicle. In the course of my work I have been required to drive the other vehicles listed both on and off road in difficult circumstances. I have been able to explore their limits both on road and off road. Of all of these vehicles I believe that the Disco stacks up with the best on road for comfort and good handling and is the most capable off road. I have read about the ponderous turning circle and body roll. On that issue I would point out that the Disco is designed as an off road vehicle with good on road manners. If you never intend to take your vehicle off road then you should get a car. If you want a vehicle which can be used off road then many of the Disco's competitors are quite unsuitable. From the point of practicality the Disco is also very good. With the high roofline and folding rear seats there is masses of room for luggage. Passengers don't miss out also as the high driving position and firm seats are very comfortable for both long and short journeys. The rear is compromised by the narrow opening doors and exposed wheelarches however once you are in it is very comfortable. On the topic of reliability and servicing much has been said about British engineering and reliability and it has not all been unfair. I have not had a trouble free run, but it is worth noting that I have only once been stranded by a mechanical problem (blown engine). All of the other issues that I have had have been niggles which have been reasonablely easily fixed. I have found that it is important to go to a mechanic who you trust and who knows about the vehicles. The most annoying problems which I had with the vehicle related to issues which stemmed from poor servicing at the dealer and turned out to be warranty jobs. Since I changed to Bruce Davis Landys I have been very happy with the vehicle and on the occasion when the engine blew up I was back up and running 5 days later. The only problem with the vehicle is the fuel consumption which is an eye-opener but if you object to that you could always get a three-cylinder Diahatsu they have good fuel economy! Bottom line: If you want a comfortable, capable vehicle which is at home both on road and off road and you are prepared to look after it and don't mind the thirst (or you could get a Diesel) this is a great choice. Don't be put off by reviewers who say: Don't buy at any cost. At least speak to people who have one and look at one before you decide. If you don't want to ever go off road and worry about fuel consumption: Get a car! Similar Products Used: Landcruiser, Patrol, Rodeo, Pathfinder, Frontera, Cherokee. |

few I have read with some disdain the various reviews regarding the Landrover Discovery.I make the following observations.1)Many of you have not the slightest notion of what makes a truly great four wheeldrive, variously complaining about the most ridiculous things,eg: the tire gets dirt on you when you walk past it.Believe me,when you are bogged to your axles in mud or sand along with a flat tyre you will be most grateful of its location.I have driven my current discovery 200,000 kilometres. It has been amazingly reliable.I would also point out that the basic design was first introduced in 1989.If you care to look back 14 years and see what the rest of the automotive world was offering, it should be good for a laugh. Here in Australia the army ran exhaustive trials before deciding on a vehicle of choice. The trial, "Project Parentie"(named after a lizard capable of lasting up to a year without eating) included offerings from mercedes benz, jeep landrover etc.The landrover defender(a design with similar underpinnigs to the discovery) was a clear winner.Indeed it is the vehicle of choice for 75 armies worldwide. Here in Australia coditions confronting an off road/on road vehicle can get very extreme.I have travelled a great deal in some very remote areas. My faith in this excellent machine is rock solid.Just like the Discovery itself. There is a new Discovery coming to the marketplace in 2004.Like all landrovers it will bring class leading design and offroad ability. But this will only be apparent to those who understand landrovers engineering and design parameters. If you want to go to the supermarket or replace your mercedes benz and then complain to this forum then you are simply venting your spleen instead of giving a considered review. There are of course those who have reason to complain,as is the case with every brand on the market.Dont believe me? simply type in the make of vehicle and the word "complaints" or something similar. I'm sure you wont be disappointed. This is a forum to whinge (complain). By its very nature this site will attract the disaffected.Be sure if you decide on a discovery that you understand what it is you are looking for.You are far less likely to be disappointed. Strength:
The Bose sound system sounds great. Dual Sun roofs are unique.
Weakness:
Listed above. Yes they are now a trendy vehicle but don't be a sheep. The Lexus GS, Mercedes, and Toyota are by far a better use of hard earned money. I the interest of my wife and 2 daughters "safety" while driving I was sold on the Land Rover Disco II. It was the "new" body style and an SUV was what we were looking for. I wish we would have taken the recommendation of our good friends who were dumping theirs. I will list the strengths below but the problems are too numerous. The rover is designed to go across the African landscape (if it doesn't break down). Therefore, the tires and suspension provide a very rough and uncomfortable ride on the highway, which happens to be where my wife does most of her driving. (The primary reason we traded it in and got a Mercedes 2 years into it was the fact it got our kids sick while riding in it.) The rear doors only open 30 degrees and the stupid rear wheel well ALWAYS got my pants dirty when putting the kids in. We called it the rover rash. Raodside assistance is non-existent. I got a flat by Palm Desert on the 10 and the dealer said it wasn't covered and I'd have to pay for it. I changed the tire myself in the hour time it took for the tow to get there to supposedly do it for me. Some luxury vehicle! It sucks gas like crazy, has zero horsepower, my knees literally touched the dash in the passenger seat, and you can't make a U-turn because of the radius. The thing vibrates so much on the freeway that the screws holding the plastic mouldings in the trunk came out. I'm not kidding!. Worst of all were our brakes. This was the other main reason for breaking free of the rover. They had ZERO stopping power and THEY NEEDED TO BE PUMPED TO QUICKLY STOP this monster. It actually caused an accident for us when I had the pedal to the fool when cut off on the 405N merge to the 101N. I hit the car that cut me off because the damn thing wouldn't stop on one depression of the pedal! This was a constant concern of my wife on a regular basis as well. Our Mercedes is a ray of sunshine after this dark episode. Similar Products Used: MBZ M class |

the gas but hey this is land rover when you want something good you pay more I have own my land rover discovery for more than a year and this truck is awesome very solid bulid (I mean solid). This truck is very comfortable inside real good leather and wood. The best sound system I ever heard for a car. I have the Java black color with lightstone leather. I love the color of the leather it's lke a bright beige. I also have the (ACE)system with the 18 inch alloys I like the alloys they seem to fit very well with the land rover discovery. The truck has a rugged body on frmae design perfect for off road adventure but I'm a lady I don't do all that. I drove to Reno Nevada this truck is really good on long trips it is also quiet. I also like the dual sunroofs the bullbars they made for the discovery goes well with it's overall apperance. For those who want a very luxurious and very sturdy built machine that can do anything and go anywhere go to your nearest Land rover dealer. But those who just want a plain so-called suv go to your Ford,Jeep,Chevy,Cadillac,GMC,Mercedes etc. Similar Products Used: Jeep cherroke Dodge raider (also rugged) Mercedes G-280 Like land rover on Mercedes. |

Strength:
Looks and rides well to a certain level
Weakness:
Gas Guzzler. No turning radius. Repairs are inconvenient. Horrible back door is too heavy. Rear doors don't open wide enough. Wind noise at highway speeds is noticeable. Seat position controls not conveniently located. Windshield wipers are cheap and perform poorly. Very tall--watch clearance at airport parking garages. Cruise control is not smooth and very irritating to use. Rear windshield wiper is plastic and already broke once. It took a month to get replacement. Neat, pebbly rubber on flat surfaces collects dust and everything else, and is nearly impossible to clean. Climate control is overly aggressive and hard to set at a perfect temp though out interior, especially rear. Dealership service department is like going to the DMV. They could learn a lot from Infiniti’s service on how to please their customers. Great looking SUV but lacks support in satisfaction of ownership. Similar Products Used: Infinti QX4 |
