quality quality quality poor backseat space engine and electrical problems After reading this forum it is nice to see that Land Rover does not produce lemons 24/7. However, I do get the sense that many LR salesman are posting over zealous reviews on this web site. Based on my experience with many trucks, both foreign and domestic, the Land Rover Discovery rates on par with or below the Chevy Tahoe/Yukon in terms of reliability. Yes, this SUV is very good off road, but in every day applications it is inferior to many of the SUV''s on the market. This truck is not cost-effective. Once the truck is broken-in expect it to break down quite a bit. Even Land Rover technicians will admit that the truck is sub-par. I wouldnt care if LR came out with the best 4x4 on the market for a dollar. Fact is all of my associates, me included, have had nothing but problems with their Discoverys and everyone is more excited about getting rid of the truck than driving it. Good luck to all those who want to buy one- you are really playing with fire. Our family loves horses, and so do many of our friends, the LR Discovery has failed at everything except for taking us all for a ride down headache lane. well built body, solid feeling
Weakness:
high priced, dealers take you to the cleaners for any simple repair. I have 54K miles, the truck runs ok, it gives me 16.5 mpg on highway and 14..5 city. it rides very solid. during this past 2 years, I had to take it for repairs for a broken idle pulley (factory recall) and to fix the cooling system, leakage from the engine rear upper gaskets, brake sensor (could not take the gear box from P) also rear lights were inoperable. The truck is nice looking, and you can recognize one of them a mile away. the sound system is not what is shoud be for the price of the vehicle. andy honda civic comes with CD player, for LR it is extra. but overall, I give the truck an 7 out of ten rating. One thing dealers should stop doing is "glamourizing" this wagon, it is a working vehicle, not something for luxury. it is good for the country club, pulling the horse trailers, playing in the mud and taking the kids to school or shopping. it is just good transportation. To make the engine work to its potential, it is necessary to run 100% synthetic oil, K&N air filters and replace the existing exhaust system with headers, high flow cat converters, and mufflers or resonators. Nice ride until 1 year elapses.
Weakness:
Very poor quality. I must not have the same truck as the rest of you. Come to think of it, I guess none of my friends have too. My Disco II is downright horrible. Sure, when you first get the truck its great. However, once you get 1 year of mileage under your belt a ton of stuff starts going wrong. After one year the whole ride of the truck changes. It becomes bouncy instead of the tight DiscoII you first had. Then the electrical and quality control problems start. The seat shorts out, the 6 CD changer shorts out, the stereo shorts out, windows shorts out, the sunroof trim liner keeps popping out and falling on your head, engine belts snap (there was a recall but they never replaced it until it broke), the stock tires dry rot within 18 months. I can go on and on but there is no point. This truck has been in the shop more than on the road. Its one thing if I was the only one with problems but everyone, I mean everyone, in my family and friends circle has had so many problems that they cant wait to sell or early terminate the leases. They should increase the time allotment for the Lemon Law. Do yourself a favor, dont ever buy this product. Even my the 4.0's are plauged with problems. The joke is on the consumer. Ive had quite a few trucks/cars and this one is the champion of junk. Similar Products Used: Tahoe, Suburban, Range Rover 4.0, Land Cruiser, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Sequoia. |

Strength:
This SUV was engineered for off road use then designed for on road...it really shines when in the rough. The truth is it can perform off road like no other SUV (except a Hummer). The original styling sets you apart from everyone else. The V8 is a powerplant and is great for all around use. Luxurious and comfortable. I was very attached to this vehicle and enjoyed being a member of the "club".
Weakness:
The Discovery is prone to faulty British craftmanship. As with all British vehicles, wiring components are quirky. Just about all years of the Discovey have a seperate engine problem. The 97 was frequent with sticky valves, which I had to have engine work done frequently. When you fix one thing, it's just a matter of time before something else goes wrong. I was plauged with problems on mine and would probably never own another one until I was filthy rich and had more than one vehicle. Rather annoying to have so many problems with a vehicle that was only a couple of years old. They call it the "Land Rover Experience". There is nothing on the road like a Land Rover. Indivuality, capability and heritage are just a few words that describe the overall feel of owning this vehicle. But, on the other side of the spectrum...expensive, expensive, expensive. Land Rovers are know for their durability, but unknown to most for the maintenance needed to keep them durable. Similar Products Used: Toyota 4-Runner: More day to day dependable and cheaper parts, but everyone has one and you don't feel like anything special when you drive one. |

Strength:
-Comfortable and solid in the snow.
Weakness:
-Prone to mechanical problems, especially carbon build-up on valves. Be sure to get the extended warranty if you plan to keep your discovery past the manufacturers warranty period. We had some major work done during the warranty period, with the most serious being cylinder head valve jobs. I learned from the service folks here that there is a design flaw in the engine heads, resulting in carbon build-up and sticking exhaust valves. Just the labor alone for this repair is $2500, and there's no guarantee that the 'fix' will actually fix the problem. I had it done once under warranty and now it needs it again while it's out of warranty. I was told there is still no permanent solution for this problem on the new vehicles but they think they found a short valve stem made by Ford that may solve the problem. - poor quality My wife wanted this car. . Since day 1 we have had nothing but problems. Brakes have been replaced 3 times in 20,000 miles at $600 a service. The back seats are real small. Im just under six feet and need to move the drivers seat all the way back to get comfortable leaving no room for the baby seats. The rear seats cannot accomodate two baby seats. They are dangerously close to the front seats. Similar Products Used: Disco II cant compare to the room and value of Suburban and Yukon. |

The engine could do with a tad more power. Not too much, just a tad. That said, off road the power delivery is perfect, with a capital P. Awesome product.
