Disco II
Strength:
Everything. Looks, styling, off road capabilities. We took it to Wisconsin (15 hours each way) and were happy with the on road performance. No it does not run with so called SUV''''s from BMW, Mercedes and Acura, but they can''''t hold a candle to what the Disco does off road. So if you want a real SUV get the Land Rover. If you want a 4x4 mini van go see your Mercedes dealer.
Weakness:
Dealer support. I have not been happy with the treatment at Land Rover Denver South. FYI you can fit a 265x55-16 no problem. Denver South needs to educate the parts dept and go back to Saturday service for those of us that do not live in Denver. I love this truck. We have had it for over a year without any problems. My wife did put it sideways on I-70 last winter on ice, luckily she and the Disco were fine. Some of the reviewers complain about the handling, a friend of mine was driving ours last week in Salt Lake City for the first time when interstate traffic came to a scretching halt. He hit the brakes and went onto the shoulder, which consisted of loose gravel, and was impressed with the control he had over the Disco. He was able to bring it to a complete stop in a staight line. And is it really that big of a deal that the window and door lock buttons are in a different place. Come on people you can remember button locations can''''t you? And to the poster that complained about the exspensive CD changer. Yes Land Rover does want a lot of money for one, but if you go to any stereo retailer they can sell you one with a fm modulator. I bought a really nice Alpine 6 disc changer for about $350 and have been very happy. As for the 188 HP V-8, it gets us to the top of Vail Pass and the Eisenhower Tunnel at 70 mph. Strength:
Permanent 4-wheel drive, frame, suspensions in off-road, torque, comfort, load capability and luggage room.
Weakness:
On the road: poor acceleration, steering, handling. Off-road: rear angle. My Disco is a 4 in-line 300Tdi turbocharged diesel powered model. It has less power than the V8 gas version (113Hp instead of 188Hp of the V8 and 138 Hp of the new 5T "Tempest" 5 in-line diesel unit), but has a lot of torque. Despite of the road looking bodywork, it''''s a true off-road vehicle. And that means it has many limits on the highways: acceleration is poor, roadholding is good but affected by weight, high barycenter, suspensions'''' scheme and m+s tyres. But if you choose a quiet driving style it''''s fine. On narrow, winding trails dimension are a problem, so driving on the Alps smaller 4-wheels drive off-road are more agile. The best terrain for the Disco is, perhaps, the desert. I took my Disco to Libya six years ago, driving 1,000 miles off-road and crossing the Erg of Awbari: I fell in love with her. And now I''''m just wandering when I''''ll be able to go back to Africa with my Disco! P.s.: permanent 4-wheel drive is great in winter on slippery roads and on the snow. Strength:
Stlye, not a bulky SUV, solid heavy feel and obviously a safe vehicle.
Weakness:
Needs more interior room, huge panel door to open in the rear, adds to style though, and bad MPG, but its and SUV..Narrow rear door openings. weak highway vehicle.. My wife loves the car, great for around town, she drives 6,000 miles per year with the kids. I wish it had more room. Very cramped interior. It is a very utilitarian vehicle, not much luxury here. we have a 2001 Landcruiser as well and it is a superior vehicle in every way. The disco has not had any maintenance issues, knock on wood as of yet..no major expenses other than gas, but hey its a safe SUV what do you want gas mileage too.. come on. Strength:
Styling...wanna turn heads? This will. Incredible off-road abilities, smooth ride, good turning radius (beats some cars - easy to navigate in parking lots), excellent customer service.
Weakness:
poor gas mileage Do your homework before you buy an SUV of ANYKIND! Do not expect carlike qualities from an SUV. Granted, most SUVs now are extremely refined and very carlike but do not compare them to cars. My 98 Disco has been nothing but a pleasure to drive. With the exception of being a bit of a gas guzzler this thing has far surpassed my expectations. I''ve driven 4Runners, Pathfinders and Explorers and they have nothing on a Disco. There are very few trucks that you can drive on and off road and feel totally capable. If you''d like to know more, drop me a line. By the way, that''s $28,000 CDN dollars. Strength:
Turns heads.
Weakness:
Do not buy this vehicle if you have small children. It is absolutly impossible to get them out of their car seats without bumping their heads, your head or getting your clotheds dirty! The rear doors just don''t open wide enough! The road noise is horrible. It is very cold riding in the rear seats due to cold air coming in the doors. Not enough bells and wistles for the money. They don''t tell you about the costly upkeep of the vehicle. We are selling ours after only 16 months of owning it! Would not buy again. Similar Products Used: First SUV we''ve owned. |

Series II
Strength:
Go-anywhere capability, upper-crust Land Rover image at a relatively low price, many off-roading standard features. Solid chassis kept me from getting injured in a rollover that totaled the vehicle.
Weakness:
very quirky placement of many controls, overly tall height has caused problems with mall garages, very few luxury features compared to competitors, tipsy feeling at times, rattles and squeaks more than expected, expensive CD changer option (stereo not compatible with 3rd party changers), oil change required expensive dealer service as no one else had the filter. There was only 1 model designation for 2000, so don''t wonder why I didn''t specify SD or SE. Look at the strengths & weaknesses I note below, but here is a major warning: my Disco lost control and rolled-over on a highway from a simple emergency lane change at 65 mph. It is now totaled and I am shocked that this would occur from an everyday emergency maneuver. Also, the reason for the low purchase price was that I bought a dealer demo with 5000 miles on it. Strength:
I like the color
Weakness:
see above. In addittion, the dealer has had tremendous turnover in the service dept., and no one seems to remember the constant set of problems - even though it is in computer. When a new guy comes in, he tries real hard and then gives up - or moves on to another dealer. Here is the list of what has gone wrong in less than 2 years: New thermostat (on way home from dealer on day one), new radiator 2 months later, new radiator last week. Need new brakes and new rotars with less than 28k miles. We have large leaks in both sunroofs - they still cannot figure it out. I have had it in the shop at least 6 imes on this - have showed them the leaks/puddles personally - still not fixed. Had all carpents replaced, and overhead lights. Head lights have been replaced twice, rear twice (needs again) The doors get "dinged" easily in parking lots - it is loaded with them. The auto locks had to be fixed when my kids got stuck in the car. In summary, when the car overheated with my two kids in the car last week we said enough - we will be getting rid of this piece of junk asap. Similar Products Used: Jeep, Nisson pathfinder. |

extra-seats to small not fit for adults I´m starting to wonder if Land Rover sells in the U.S. the same car it sells here in europe because I´ve never heard of anyone complaining about their Discos as much as I´ve been reading in most of your reviews. My Disco never went to the shop for repairs and the only trouble i´ve had ´till now and still do is that I pay more in the high-way tools and also cleaning it costs a bit more. On the other end the Jeep Grand Cherokee end up with a broken suspension after only one month of daily off-road use in the mountains. Bealive me the problem does is not the car, the problem is the way the car is built in some factories and also i bealive that if you used the diesel engine you woulden´t have that drinking problem anymore. My disco only as 120h.p. and still it can run up to 95 m.p.h and pull a boat while is at it. Sorry about my english. Similar Products Used: Toyota Land-cruiser Jeep Grand cherokee |
