After ten months my 99 Discovery II has emerged as a very capable and farily reliable vehicle. After towing a 3000 pound trailer; driving icy Colorado winter roads; daily 50 mile round trip commuting up and down a mountain pass; rear quarter panel denting off-roading; and 85 MPH interstate cruising I would say it is a very nice and capable utility SUV -- a REAL SUV. Expect 10-17 MPG, lots of looks, a few initial fit and finish issues, SUPERB customer service (from my dealer anyway) and horrific monthly payments.

I can't say enough. This vehical is awesome. It will go, through, on, over under, in, out, up and down ANYTHING. Gas Mileage is better than I expected, about 14 city, 18 highway.

Weakness:

Very heavy. Definatly NOT my old BMW M3. Must slow down early.

This vehical gets a bad rap sometimes from whinners who don't know how to drive or care for a REAL and SERIOUS SUV. There is no other SUV, besides the Hummer, that can even come close to the Discovery in proformace. It does what a SUV is supposed to do. It is not one of these candy *ss whimpy lexusbmwmercedespathfinderforerunner, light wieght, underpowered, low torgue, soccer mom suvs. Soccer mom's don't buy it, get a minivan. City dwellers? Go buy a Lexus.Outdoors lovers? This is the SUV 4 U. NO jeeps, No Cheveys, No Fords. It can hold all your gear, and it big enough to sleep comfortably in if you have to. This thing is a TANK.

Strength:

Off road prowess, distinct styling, luxurious amenities, safety features and standards. Doesn't look like anything else on the road. Prestigious reputation. Strong V8 engine, dual sun roofs, active cornering enhancement, eighteen inch wheels, seven seating capacity, strong body frame, excellent sound system, and on and on and on

Weakness:

Fuel economy, but worth it considering what you get. The other SUV's are all the same, and also get the same if not worse gas consumptions. In having not so good gas consumption, Why not own something that has a great reputation and then some.

It's amazing what this thing can do. You'll never be mistaken for anything else on the road. It's a great uniquely capable vehicle that has both on and off road manners, and with the other vehicles like freelander, Range Rover and Defender, it owns a unique place in the so called SUV market. These are civil in manners, have models that allow an owner to choose for whatever foray they desire and are built really well. Be prepared to maintain them and drop a substantial amount of money to keep up the maintenance. There's no such thing as a maintenance free vehicle, And oh yes that applies to Lexus and toyota of the like as well.

Everything else out there, other than for maybe Humvee and Land Rover itself, is the same, rebadged, covered truck marketing scheme out there. Buy the original, not something with maybe a few more options with a different name and they call it "all new". Let's get real people. Please do your homework before buying something that's like something else on the road. Where's the thrill in that, and personally, it's a pure marketing rip off to offer something higher in price than what's it's twin, cousin, whatever, other same vehicle can do. So the name is there, Big deal, but the real thing is is it original and not taken from something else. I agree on a Land Cruiser as a better value but a LX 470 that gets confused with the L.C. C'mon, where's the prestige in owning something you could've spent ten thousand less, instead wasted ten K just to get the name and maybe some extra padding with a few more watts and amps you could get aftermarket at you local good guys.

Great ride. Absolutely must get the A.C.E. package, which is a $2,000 option but it is worth the extra money. With the ACE package, which stands for active cornering enhancement, this car rides just like a sports car. You can hit any corner at full speed and there is very little ,if any body roll. Love the interior. Love the leather. Above all love the ride.

Weakness:

Brakes are always squeeking. Always something minor going wrong, nothing major, but always minor. Every 15,000 miles you need new rotors which cost $1,500. Torque in this car takes some time to get used to, its allot different than any other car.

We love it, we will probably always have it. It feels good and looks good, and handles great with the ACE pack. Would highly recommend, but keep in mind poor gas, which is common for all cars now adays, and poor brakes.

I love the power, the brakes stop on a dime (Trust me I have used them!)

Weakness:

It is a guzzler!!! Anywhere from 29.00 to 34.00 to fill it up. I fill it often!!!

I love this SUV!!! It is a beautiful thing!!! It is super comfortable and a pleasure to drive. i average 60 miles or more a day and it is the cooshiest srive ever. It is sort of slow on take off but it will blow anyone away in the long run. I was surprised to look down and find that I was going 95mph and didn't even realize. It also has great brakes. I have had a chance to use them already. I nearly hit a turning diesel truck. It stopped on a dime. I would recommend it to anyone.

Great Looks, Off Road ability, Interior Room, Very Comfortable ride, V8

Weakness:

Gas Mileage, Could use more HP(It wouldn't take a lot of effort to make this V8 produce 250hp)

The wife and I decided to get a sport-ute. Started at the Mercedes dealership drove the ML320 & ML430. Both of these are Junk. The seats are terrible and the build quality is the pits. Mercedes should be ashamed to put their logo on these two.

Next off to the Lexus dealer. The RX300 is a 4x4 Minivan. Great ride, good seats, Too quite (can't hear the engine running). Without question this thing is designed for women. Boring, Boring, Boring.

I will give Acura credit for producing the best 4x4 Minivan Sportute. This one beats the Lexus in every area, plus it cost at least 5 grand less.
Still a sleeper though.

At the BMW dealership looking at the X5. This is a great 4x4 Tall Sport Car. Basically a 5 series jacked up. No, I repeat NO cargo room. And boy is this thing expensive. You are better off getting a Disco II and buy a 5 series car. Chances are you have at least two cars.

With the great deals Landrover is offering now on the Disco II, you cant go wrong. Mine cost less than a Jeep Grand Cherokee. We bought a Mercedes SLK 230 for the sport car side. Together, we have all grounds covered.

Got into two accidents. Hit a deer at 30mph that just broke the headlight and with a minor dent. Also a drunk jerk off hit me head on going about 25 (I was stopping, probably going 10mph). Completely f'd up his car - all tires flat and front looked like an accordian. It had to be towed and I drove mine home. These things are fricken brutes. Got 70K on it now w/o big problems. Dealership in Akron is great too - just don't like the hour drive (to the ghetto) but they take care of you. Like the 2 sunroofs and the solid sturdy feel you get when you're up high. In college so drive one of my folks BMW's when I'm home and can't wait to get back to my car and be up high. Good stereo and about the same price as other SUV's considering all the standard features. Also great in the snow, one rough roads, etc. could park anywhere on campus (like curbs or hills no problem - never once been stuck - actually pretty fun trying) *Has never not started or stalled on me either. Has taken 3 yearsabuse and 70,000 miles in the cold with no problems

Weakness:

Brakes are a little weak.
Guzzles gas
Expensive service
All the windows make it hotter than hell in the summer and its so big it takes a while for the AC to kick in
Being fairly uncommon in OH, some dealers at normal gas stations/oil change stops have no clue what they're doin - don't even get the name of teh car right (and always have to order your parts and then guess how to fix it), so whenever I need anything I gotta go to the dealership
These older ones are starting to look a little too Euro and dated.
Getting a new car for graduaation in May - resale value doesn't look that promising (should get 12) - but will really miss it. Not getting another one just becasue I'm ready for something different. Wanna get either a souped up Durango or 4runner, or maybe even a used range rover. Would appreciate suggestions. (If I never had a Land ROver disco. would definately get one)

Strength:

ITS THE ORIGINAL AND STILL THE BEST SUV AVAILABLE - WORLDWIDE. I must admit that i was a little worried going to buy the Discovery here in Chicago. From the research i have done here in the US it seems they have a lot of problems with build quality issues and minor mechanical problems.

This totally suprised me because back in Europe these things are as reliable and indestructible as you are going to find. Why do you think all the farmers use Discovery's? - because they need something extremely reliable that can handle some of the most brutal conditions, that can spend all day in 4 foot of mud, and that can still offer luxury and a great drive around the city. I have friends in the UK who have toured Europe in these things with 300,000 miles on them. So the problems i have read about here suprised me.

However, myself and my wife really wanted one. So off we went to LR. I have to say that the dealership experience was great. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. We wanted the Discovery SE but Fully loaded - and they gave us a great deal on it. With all the options - we have the 18" alloys, chrome "Challenge' bullbars, the 'Expedition' rack, and EVERY interior option except the back-row seats, with the auto-adjustable suspension, and auto-climb it stickered for 45,500 - but we got it for 40,000.

We've had it now for 6 months and have driven it all over. Our last trip was to Vermont where we put it through snow, mud, grit and water - it drives just perfectly and we have had no problems whatsoever. We are both outdoors people who live a very outdoors lifestyle (snowboard, mountain-bike, kayak, raft) - and this is the perfect vehicle for us.

Plenty of interior space - for driver, and front and rear passengers. Lots of rear legroom and more importantly headroom. No other SUV can give you that 'cavernous' feel like you get with the high roof of the Discovery. Lots of windows, light and airy. Very comfortable seats - great leather and wood. Good 6CD system. Awesome auto-climate. Huge rear cargo space (our 2 mountain bikes can fit comfortably in the back if we don't have them on the roof, along with our snowboards and all our gear. Awesome ride - especially off-road. IT CAN GO ANYWHERE!!!!! Legendary off-road ability and the computerised sophistication of this thing is unbelievable -auto Hill Descent, Climb, Suspension, Traction!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As you can tell. We love this thing and will not be changing it for a very long time. For everyone out there who has a Discovery but has had problems with it - i sympathise w/you because you shouldn't be getting these issues with this vehicle. I don't know whats going on over here with the build quality but i hope it gets rectified soon - because this is really the VERY BEST SUV IN THE WORLD - BAR NONE!

Weakness:

Only 2. Cupholders are totally useless. And - the rear seat entry/exit isn't exactly the easiest because of the high wheel wells. But these things are only minor issues and won't spoil the overall experience.

THE BEST SUV IN THE WORLD. The Discovery is a legend worldwide, and rightly so. I don't see any other type of vehicle in the Africa Cross-Continent Challenge, World Expedition Challenge,or the Discovery Challenge.
There's a message in there somewhere!

If you live an outdoors lifestyle - you NEED a Discovery. If you just want to own the best SUV available, buy one.

If i could give it 6 STARS i would.

Strength:

I love the look, the way it drives and it's ability to fare well in sand or snow.

Weakness:

I have had problem after problem since purchasing the vehicle.

I have been nothing but frustrated with the Landrover that I purchaed. After only a couple of months I began having minor problems here and there such as the gas tank not staying shut, the sunroof not opening properly, etc. But then after about 10 months of driving it, it began making terrible noises and I had to have the idler, p/s pump and the radiator replaced. The technician said that I was lucky that I wasn't driving it when the radiator went or the vehicle could have caught fire. They had it in the shop for 23 days to repair these problems, which I think is ridiculous! Since then my rear sunroof has started leaking, the automatic locks aren't working properly and the front heated windshield cracked completely across when there was ice on the windshield and I was trying to defrost. I've tried to make an appointment to have these problems repaired and they said they can't get the vehicle in for 6 weeks! Is that considered a warranty???? These are just a few of the problems that I have had and neither the service center or the corporation seem very customer service oriented.
