Strength:

-it is the essence of the "sport" "utility"
-goes anywhere
-the most easily modified vehicle in the world (even the visors can be unscrewed and taken out)
-it has history, unlike most vehicles
-the camraderie (other Jeep drivers know what i'm talking about)
-retail value is extremely high because Wranglers are in such high demand. The Wrangler is one of the few vehicles that owners can easily MAKE money in retail value.

Weakness:

You learn to live with them. It's a Jeep.

If you have read any of these other reviews, you should have noticed something. Everybody loves their Jeep! Believe me, it is quite unlike any other vehicle in the world, and a rating from Consumer Reports or Car&Driver is not an accurate assessment of the Jeep. The Jeep is made for the Jeep owner, so if you have any doubts, take a test drive or forget it. I highly reccomend this vehicle, but it is definitely not for everyone. I will be a Jeep owner forever.

Strength:

Feels solid. Quiet (in my opinion). Looks, smells, and tastes
like a Jeep. I didn't expect this from the new Jeeps.
I haven't had it long enough to know all yet, will update.

Weakness:

This is the reason I'm posting this at all. It really bugs me
to see a lot of you complaining about the Jeep being a Jeep.
This is like saying you don't like your Cat because it has fur.
You don't like Fur....dont buy a cat! Some of you have ligament complaints and this is worth saying. A bad engine or other defect.
But that's what it is, a defect. I have only had this Jeep for about two days and have no complaints yet. I would like to see things in here
that are relevant to what a Jeep was made for please. This is
my 4th Jeep and will update you on things that are important to a Jeep owner.

I traded in the 89 Y-J and a 97 buick on this deal so the money
side of it is a pain. We had to really dicker with the sales
people to make a good deal. I hate buying a new car. Now to
the fun part. I was not happy about getting rid of the Y-J at
all but we didn't need the buick cause wife got a company car.
We couldn't just sell it because the loan on the buick was shall we
say, not a good one. So out to look at new cars. I was *very* leery
of the new Jeeps. I didn't think Chrysler would keep the Jeep
a Jeep. I loved my Y-J and wasn't happy about having to trade it
in. My wife talked me into trying one out before I wrote them off.
I'm glad she did. I had heard so much bad s**t about it I was closed
minded all the way. Well I looked at them and was won over completely!
I drove one and decided I would go all out with this one. I got the Sahara
with the automatic and 30 inch wheel group. All the good stuff. What the heck I'm 47 and deserve the comforts now. My problem now is to find a place to store the hard top. Anyway, this Jeep is a joy to drive and I
will say that the ride is a whole lot better than the others I have had.
I can't comment on the off road performance yet but will be taking a
little trip soon which should prove interesting. I'll let you know.
I think if you don't like this Jeep because of the ride, loudness
gas mileage, water coming in....well all I can say is you have
no conception of what the Jeep was designed for and you need to buy
something else. My opinion! I love it and we'll see about the off
road qualities. And, if it really is a jeep.

Model Reviewed: Wrangler

Strength:

It's a Jeep, they're all strengths! Rigid suspension (I am a true Jeeper and only respect a rough, kidney damaging ride!) Cool design (its not cute or curved or neat or anything, just flat out cool!) Excellent turning radius (I can pull a u-ey in places no other cars can) Removable top (this is the coolest damn feature! Mine will be off all summer!) And 4 wheel drive is a must for anyone who prides themselves on knowing "the back roads"! It is mechanically simple (I can get parts from Meijers if I have to and do the work myself in half a day!)

Weakness:

There are none! Weaknesses imply expectations and any idiot knows what a Jeep is all about! If you expect a smooth, quiet ride with excess padding for the butt and super smooth handling for the arthritis - you've been sold the wrong SUV! It is a gas guzzler (even the 4cyl) but considering its only a 10 gal tank and it costs $10 to $12 per fill I guess it is not that bad. The soft-top is somewhat noisy and on the older Jeep the seal around the chassis is not supertight but knowing I am cruisin in a Jeep negates any ill will toward the noise of the wind at higher speeds - it's all perspective!

The Jeep I have now is super cool! All black with after-market wide chrome wheels justifies all the looks (and believe me, everyone looks when you drive by)! The 4cyl is somewhat weak in the higher gears or when towing in the higher gears but for off road it is fine. The famous "Jeep crawl" is attainable with the 4 or 6 cyl and they both sound mean. Off roading is so so fun. You can climb anything, go through water that comes up and splashes the windshield, tug anyone free, and give your ego a major boost when you and your buddies go out and the only way to get to the coolest parts of the trails is to have everyone climb in your Jeep and leave their 4x4's behind (lol...I love that!) I plan on getting a 2000 model soon with the 6cyl. and I know I will love the extra power, but I am scared too many things will have been compromised on the newer ones (I'll keep ya posted). One note of caution which I am sure the Jeeper's already know about - Jeeps rigid suspension is great for driving over anything (potholes! - I don't swerve for no stinking potholes!!!) but if you get on some uneven ground when off road you better make sure you are going faster than a crawl, have a front winch, or some tough friends that love to push cause these babies will get stuck on the uneven ground or turns. Lockers solved that problem for me...it also doesn't hurt hurt to spray down the wheels as soon as you are done off-roadin' as the smaller particles of dirt and sand will make mince meat of your brakes and differential. I found that out the hard way. They say the tranni and differentials are sealed but it is definitely advisable that you go to get the "4x4" package when you get your oil changed to make sure they re-lube the front and back diffs and even the tranni every other time (if you're a jeeper that goes off-road more than once a week). Preventative maintenance goes such a long way with a Jeep! One other quick note - keep the door lock assembly well lubed and on point! There is nothing worse than not being able to keep the door closed on a cold winter day and a replacement assembly is $70 and a day of frustrating labor! Keep the wave alive!! There's nothing wrong with showin other Jeep's some love and it's a minimal amount of effort!

There really is no comparison, but I did have a '93 Suburban for awhile and though I will still swear there is nothing like the awesome authority of one of GM's biggest and finest - it still does not compare to the mystique of the Jeep. And even with all of it's power, the Suburban was not nearly the 4x4 joy of the Jeep. There are just some places you will never be able to go unless you own a Jeep! (or like to walk and climb)

The "jeep" history, period; this vehicle is art. Spectacular value: a new 6cylinder model "should" sell for 30k, a new 4cyl for 23-24k (actual retail for a 6 is low 20's, for a 4 is mid teens).

Buy a good copy with low miles, used, and you have a vehicle that is worth 3 times its price (in my humble opinion).

Weakness:

No weaknesses, only "weak" matches between vehicle and owner.

I initially bought my 4 cylinder model for the purpose of doing a V8 transplant: "why buy a 6 when you are just going to pull it out?"

I, decided to hold off on the transplant and just modify the 4. Stock power is 123hp, power now is about 145hp + or - 5hp.
For noise reasons, the set-up from the factory is very restricitive.

Installed a cat-back system and performance cat, a cold air intake system, syn oil, new ignition system. Also removed 80 lbs of weight in the form of the backseats, a damaged center console and carpeting.

Vehicle runs great, much better torque and top-gear acceleration, mild exhaust sound, mileage on the highway is 23-24 mpg at 55mph.

If you are willing to do mild modification, the 4 cylinder is ok.

If you want more power, I'd skip the six and get a Chevy V8 installed + the necessary drive train upgrades.

Had a chance to drive a new Range Rover Defender and it was ok, V8, etc. However, when you drive a Defender in the United States, people seem to disregard its price and give you a look like, "why aren't you driving a jeep?" :-)

Wrangler seems to fit in the U.S., Defender doesn't.

If you live in the U.S., drive a Jeep Wrangler
If you live in Great Brittain, drive a Range Rover Defender

Strength:

Park it where you want.
Go where other cars can't.
Feels good...(hard to explain this).
Extremely short turning radius.
Can see out of it very well!
All your buddies really want one down deep inside.

Weakness:

Hmm, well...uses a lot of gas, but I can afford it.
Costs a lot in comparison to other vehicles.
Teeny-weeny trunk. No real storage.

I am 42 years old, and have driven everything from a Lincoln Continental, to a 1966 Chevy Van. I wish there was some way to really express how this car (truck?) makes me feel.

The FUN is back!

Used to be, I'd get up, start the car, and drive it. (Yawn) Now I leap out of bed, run to the window, look out, and smile. I jump in, carefully start it, warm it up, and then GO! Most times I arrive/leave by other entry/exit points than the driveway. My wife simply shakes her head when she sees me climbing the bank yet again. My 10 year old daughter refuses to ride with me anymore, since I went through the pond. Sigh!

At night I rub its fender and say, "goodnight jeep." Then I tap the fender so that the alarm will say, "Get the crap away from the car, you are much too close." Reassured I go to bed and dream of Jeeps.

The PRIDE has returned!

It has been years since I really wanted to wash a car, much less vacuum one. But now, I can't wait. I feel bad when a bug smashes itself on my windshield, but I suppose, if I were a bug, that would be an honorable way to go! Anyway, I am like one of these fellows who has his little rag, and polishes his fender. Sigh!

The MUD has returned!

Even though I genreally feel bad when I get my Jeep dirty, that all changes when I hit the trail. I remember about then that I can replace any part on this vehicle from 72,000 places in the world, and so I temporarily stop caring as much about the body and drive train. Have you ever climbed a logging road up the side of a mountain, with a 500 foot drop off on your left, and a three foot rain gully between your tires? Well, I just did it last Monday, and well....sigh!

I paid too much for this Jeep, but in the long run I got just what I wanted. I am very happy with it. I'll most likely never buy another "regular" car again. The Jeep has me. (As long as Chrysler leaves the axles alone, and keeps IFS of off my Jeep)

My Jeep has:
-4.0L 6 Cylinder (DO NOT BUY A FOUR CYL, EVER)
-5 Speed Manual Trans
-Fuel Injection
-Cruise Control
-Headers
-Full doors with crank windows
-Hard and Soft Tops
-AM/FM/Tape
-Air Conditioning
-40:1 Crawl Ratio (YeeHa)

I recommend that you start having fun again. Get YOUR Jeep! Why pay a car payment for merely a (blah) car, when the FUN, PRIDE, and MUD can be back in your life.

bad gas mileage.

I just got this thing less than 48 hours ago and I love it. The only negative feeling I have about it is nervousness about someone breaking into it. I look forward to going places in this thing, and if other reviewers are any indication, that's not going to change. I also like attacking speed bumps and, sometimes, curbs. And the looks. When I park it and walk away, I just have to keep looking at it. Now if it could just get me some chicks ;-)

If you don't need a super quiet or super smooth ride, and you like roller coasters and speedboats, then you'll LOVE this. I'm mostly driving it on city streets and on freeways, so the 4 cylinder is fine. More power would be nice, but I was on a limited budget and couldn't afford it. I love what I have.

where to start? have been a jeep fan for years, owner for 7. traded my '94 4banger wrangler in last year on the sahara. my lord, what a difference. power and guts. it's a standard so not as fast off the line as the auto or some of those japanese v6's but that's not what this is about. wonderful on the highway. this jeep has a wonderful ride. cruises comfortable at 85. no more noise than any other vehicle i've owned. 20 mph everywhere. looks good. endlessly adaptable with oe or aftermarket equipment. price very competitive. mystique. hell, this is a JEEP.

Weakness:

did 2400 mile roadtrip with 3 young ladies(2 daughters and exchange student)one month after purchase. all in 8 days. yikes! carried a mtn. bike and our luggage. just little cramped for passengers, all you need tho is one of those delightful racks. again, great on any road surface(oh,oh, back to positives already. does that tell you something?).

not much more to say. this is a wonderful rig. go anywhere, do anything.price compares to many different vehicles and yet you get much more in terms of durability, versatility, adaptability. the inline6 is one of the most durable engines ever made. couple that with good allaround performance, offroad capability, bad weather handling, comfort(i don't like suspension that is mushy and floaty i.e. cadillac)and you have the best sport utility out there. everyone else is a wannabe.
