Roomy and Stylish, but looks aren't everything.
Weakness:
Above Not reliable Not a car you can own for the long haul This is a lemon. Problems arrived within first 3 months of use. Air conditioning completely went out in month 2. Was hassled about getting a loaner, but got one while it took them over a week to get the problem fixed. Also had problems with the wheel vibrating, and currently transmission is dying. Complete waste of money. Researched owners of older models who were totally satisfied and kept their vehicles 200k miles plus. Had anticipated doing the same, but now I know I need a new vehicle. A shame--car is only 3 years old. Approached dealer and found them to be useless. Asked about the lemon law and told I could forget it. Wish I could find out about Donna's class action lawsuit. Weakness:
BRAKES!!! ROTARS !!! POOR CUSTOMER RELATIONS Since I took ownership of the new vehicle, I too have had the heated seats replaced along with other minor problems. When the vehicle starting pulsating in the front at 34,000 miles I brought it in. The dealership said there was a service bulletin regarding the calipers and replaced them along with the breaks, rotars...Now, just 5,100 miles later the vehicle started pulsating again. When I brought it in for service I was told that my rotars are warped. The dealership said they would not cover it because it is now out of warranty. Eventhough it has only been 5,100 miles, it was also 14months since they did the repair. Per the dealership they tried to blame it on my driving and possibly because the car sits frequently. I advised the dealership that the vehicle is driven everyday wethere 1 or 10 miles, it is driven daily. The dealership and chrysler are refusing to even consider doing this under warranty. This is an ongoing problem that the dealership and jeep are aware of but are doing nothing about it. Right now I am driving around my Jeep that has the following written in white shoe polish WARNING..vehicle may not stop, repaired at Chrysler Jeep West. There is also a lemon on my radio antenea. I would like to join a class action law suit for Pennsylvania. If there is not one existing, I would like to start one. Please email me with related issues for the Jeep Grande Cherokee. I have also filed a complaint with the BBB. I encourage everyone who has this problem with their Jeep Grande Cherokee to also file a complaint. I always wanted a Jeep for there known performance but after dealing with this, I could care less about owning another Chrysler Product. Strength:
Nothing specific, had no problems other than the keyless entry module.
Weakness:
The keyless entry module would not recognize my key to keep the vehicle running. it would start and shut down after 2 seconds. Isn't it funny that it recognizes the key to unlock the doors?: Traded my 2001 Grand Cherokee on a 2003 model to take advantage of 0% financing since we were planning to drive cross country. Loved the 2001! In Phoenix, AZ, on a Sunday afternoon, 2000 miles from home, we were stranded in a shopping center since the key module did not recognize our key. The tow truck driver was able to get the car started by manually working the door locks. We did not use the electronic opener for the rest of the trip. One month later the same problem and the car had to be towed to the dealer. They replaced the module and reprogrammed the keys. 24 hrs later we were stranded in a parking lot with the same problem and had to be towed. They had the car for 11 days and could not find the problem. Contacted Daimler Chrysler in MI and dealt with a very rude employee who basically told me it was something I had to live with. The manager of the dealership had a service employee return my calls. Chrysler requested that I keep a log of when the problem occurred to help them in solving it. I could not worry every time I drove this vehicle that I would be stranded. Each time it happened, it had to be towed to a dealer. I traded the car in at a loss for a Ford Explorer. The Customer service offered by Chrysler leavea a lot to be desired and I will discourage anyone from purchasing a Chrysler product. A brand new car that does not start is worth as much as one in the junkyard. |

Weakness:
Brakes MPG Cheap Glove box After driving a 2001 Nissan Maxima I decided that I needed a bigger car for utility purposes, but i didnt want to lose performance. So I traded in the max and found the Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited and its been heaven ever since. Its a wonderful suv. Its fast as a bullet and gives me the space i need to haul things. I was surprised when i pulled my friends Escalade out of a ditch in a ice storm as it weighed twice the size of my truck as my other friend with his 00 montero sport couldnt. The tan leather seats are plush and comforting and after a lond day at work the heated lumbar supported seats can be a great plus. The suroof is large and fun. All the important dash controls are at the finger tips and the infinity gold stereo is good but cant be compared to the bose the maxima had.The quadra trac system is great as ive never been stuck in mud when ive been off roading and its so simple and requires less effort on my part and more on the car.It has one of the best cruise controls ive seen in a car so far. All in all its reliable and nice. But can lose points in the fuel department as it only does 15 mpg. Its expected though with a 5900cc motor and the brakes have been changed twice in the year ive had it. Also the glove box fell and i feel it was cheaply designed. Smooth ride, comforable seats All Wheel Drive is very stable in rain, ice, and snow. ABS Brakes stop well under all conditions.
Weakness:
We have needed to have the front brake rotors either resurfaced or relace every 5000 to 12000 miles. The dealer has been nice but not helpful. Chrysler has been no help. To date we have 53000 miles and have had the rotors replaced 5 times and resurfaced 4 times. We are currently considering trading this jeep in on another make of car. We will not purchase another jeep. We puchased the Jeep New because of it's smooth ride and adjustable passenger seat. My wife has had 3 neck surgeries and the car was very easy for her to ride in. This is our second Grand Cherokee. Similar Products Used: 83 Subaru GL Wagon 4WD 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee 98 Ford Expedition |

All the above plus some. Too many to list. Hastily went out and purchased a lemon. With less than a hundred miles on it, dealer replaced the fuel control valve, fuel filter and pump. Idle roughs but the dealer said it’s normal. Ride is rough and too much wind noise. Brakes are weak. It is currently in the shop again (2 days). The AC hasn’t worked since I purchased it. Dealer tells me they are “stumped”. They can’t fix the AC. Have 5,500 miles on it now. This will be sold in the lemon lot….. Similar Products Used: Nissan P-U. Brakes (hopefully better in the '04) Gas mileage (not unexpected) Traded in my '01 JGC for an '04. Felt the '01 with the I6 engine was a bit underpowered, so I got the V8 this time. WOW this thing is a bullet! Had some of the usual problems with the '01; brake rotor resurface for $100 deductible, later replaced, along with calipers for free. Had a bit of tranmission and cooling system work done after 50K miles for a total of about $1000. I was never stranded. I got 16-17 mpg general driving (I live in a rural area) and almost 20 mpg on a recent trip to Florida. Got almost 50K on the original Goodyears. I like the stereo in both the '01 and the '04. On the '04, I got the free Sirius radio upgrade, which I'm really enjoying. Wish I'd had that on our Florida trip! My Jeep was/is a good driver with impressive winter ability. Never worried about getting stuck with the Quadra-Trac full time AWD. |

Good-looking, comfortable to drive.
Weakness:
BRAKES/ROTORS DO NOT LAST!! I believe this is a defect in this vehicle. I am totally dissatisfied with this vehicle. At 12,100 miles, the dealer replaced the brake rotors and pads at no expense to me because of "defect". Now, at 29,000 miles, the rotors and pads again need replacing. Both the dealer and Daimler Chrysler refuse to take any responsibility this time. I am a "gentle" driver - a 60-year-old grandmother - and have NEVER replaced rotors and pads on any care I have owned, and I kept some of those 8 to 9 years. I have had tires last 70,000 miles! I do not "ride the brake" and have always taken great care of my vehicles. I am having the rotors and pads replaced today and now am told that the Jeep needs a wheel alignment and tire rotation. This was supposedly done, according to the dealer's bills, about 3,000 miles ago! This should not happen, either! My regular mechanic said these Jeeps are known for brake problems, but Jeep refuses to acknowledge this. I will NEVER buy another Jeep or Daimler Chrysler product. |

Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo - 6cyl
Strength:
excellent 4 wheel drive capabilities. goes down the highway like a nice road car. lots of options and bells and whistles. great looking vehicle. easy to find parts. easy to work on. very comfortable ride. drives aggressively and feels very sturdy, tackles bumps in the road, not floaty like other suvs I tried.
Weakness:
lots of little rattles and noises from the interior, especially in the dash. mileage not great, but to be expected. Everybody and their mother owns one of these in Minnesota (I can look out my office window right now and probably see 5-10 Grand Cherokees). 6cyl Engine could be more powerful, to get it to really kick, you gotta give it LOTS of gas. This has been a great vehicle so far. I've owned a Suzuki Samurai, a Honda CRX, and a Chevrolet Lumina Euro, and like this Grand Cherokee the most. It's a very comfortable vehicle to drive, and all the options and bells and whistles (power locks and windows, info center stuff) are nice, something that I never had on my other vehicles. I've had this thing off road a couple times now and it handles any type of terrain I throw at it, and then it can cruise down the highway with the comfort of a car on the way home. Nice! I bought this vehicle cause I live in Minnesota and winter is inevitable. I will find out how well it handles in the winter in about 8 months, but I am thinking I will be glad that I bought a 4x4 again. If you want to install an aftermarket stereo system, this is a tough vehicle to do so in. It was very hard to run wires through the dash to the reciever and such (well, more so than the other vehicles i've owned), and working around the existing Infinity system is a pain in the ass. I would suggest completely bypassing and removing the Infinity system and run new wires from your new reciever to the door speakers and such, which is a really a pain but worth it. The vehicle overall is very solid, but there are so many little rattles coming from the dash and door panels that I cannot isolate and eliminate, it seems like every day there is a new rattle or something coming from a new place in the interior. Kinda annoying at first, but I've become used to it and now don't really notice them anymore. The engine runs smooth and when the engine is well maintained (good air flow and fuel flow), it idles and runs better than any of the other vehicles I have owned. I've heard from several sources that these jeeps NEED to be well maintained or they could develop costly problems, so when buying a used one, make sure it has had regular maintenance. On that note, I find it to be a great vehicle for the type of person who likes to tinker with vehicle maintenance. Easy to work on in all aspects so far. It sits up high too, so you can crawl underneath without having to jack it up. Similar Products Used: Suzuki Samurai (?) |
