Brake and noises that come from the front end ??? Transmission pulls Gas mileage

All around this is a great car. One of the selling points to me were the seat heaters. This is my first SUV some things just take getting used too. The main problems i have with it, is 1. Gas mileage (13mpg) The constant re-alignments and the noises that come from the engines. This car is awesome for one reason. It lets you know when somethings wrong in a variety of ways..

Strength:

Powerfull, comfortable for an off-road machine, and all the design 'bugs' have been long since corrected in the now, 'old' design. Great visibility, and still a Jeep.

Weakness:

Only one exterior lock cylinder-the drivers door. Same lack of rear seat leg room all the Grands, and the Cherokees have always had. Polished Chrome wheels look like a 59 Cadillac once owned them, and the front plastic 'chrome ' grill to match.

I factory ordered this Overland because my 94 Limited is at 203,000 miles with the original unrebuilt drive train intact, and I wanted the solid front axle for Off-Road use instaed of the 05 model with the Soccer Mom suspension system. If I wanted a Shopping Mall SUV I'd have bought an Alabama-Benz. Zero problems after first year but the only key lock is on the drivers door, would two more lock cylinders be too expensive for Daimler to have added to the most expensive Jeep product made ? If the battery operated door unlock thingy dies you get only one door to key operate, NOT even the tailgate ! Stupid ! The seats in my 94 Ltd are waffle leather and much more comfortable, though not heated like to 04. The chrome wheels are bit too 'P_mp-My Ride' for an SUV, but it still looks better than the 05 with high belt line and noticably smaller windows. The transmission in the 94 has never been rebuilt and I never had a warped rotor in 12 years, problems many reviews seem to mention. (torgue your own lug nuts, and never let the 'air-wrench monkeys' tighten them to stop warped rotors) The 4.7 V-8 is not as quick as my 5.2 cast iron in the 94, but it more than adequately hauls the heavy vehicle. Mine is geared lower than my 94 was and not meant for rocket lauches from a standstill. It could probably pull a tank uphill though. This my 3rd Jeep SUV since 1987 when American Motors made them. All have been reliable with minor problems and the first one I gave away at 200,000 mi + to a relative, the 94 is at that point, and the 04 is probably my last now that Jeep is being Soccer Mom'd to help sales.

BRAKE ROTORS Heating and A/C Trans Knocking

I fell in love with this car when I saw it. Styling I believe is second to none and I was very satisfied with my Jeep for the first year and a half. My first problem came when I had to replace front rotors at 43000 miles at my expense. You can see that this problem occurs with almost every newer JGC. This wasnt the end of the world but my most recent problem has brought me here. Winters in Chicago are harsh and even harsher when your lemony $30G truck wont heat up. Took it in and they told me I would have to leave it for a day and it would be a few hundred just to look at it. They estimated a problem with vent doors and gave me a ballpark of $1300! This car is less than 2 years old. As soon as I can I will be dumping this SUV and going back to a foreign competitor seeing that US makers dont have the word quality in their dictionaries. Along with that the trans knock when going from reverse to drive occasionally and the seats are squeaky.

Weakness:

Fuel economy Quirks and build quality

Purchased the GC off my father, who bought it in July, it was the demo model. I reccomend not buying a demo, I am unsure if it was abused. All 4 shocks are leaking already and a CV boot is going. Additionally, the wipers are already gone. All of course covered under warranty, but still ridiculous. I drive like a maniac, and that is why I like Jeeps with v-8s. Torque, right when you need it combined with the traction of 4 wheel drive. Taken it off road and never became stuck. Plus, I can put anything in it. My dad, brother, uncle, (and my sis is getting one) all have GC's and like them for different reasons. Some are two wheel drive, but my brother and I take the 4 wheel drive ones. My brother was in a serious accident in his lifted 93 Jeep GC and it spun, rather than rolling and everyone walked away. Other car's occupants were in critical condition unfortunately (VW bus) Overall, I love these cars, even with their quirks and terrible resale value; however if you want one new, better lease, otherwise buy it and hold on to it for at least 6 years - but I am no financial planner. Additionally, those in my family who can afford two cars own a serious sports car, and the Jeep is the alternate car - something should be said for that. Why don't they buy the X5 or the Cayenne? Because they are too expensive for what you get and they CAN'T really offroad. However, I have yet to have a Cayenne join us out on the trail. Test Drove 2005 GC with Hemi v-8 Not so Jeepish anymore, and yes it is not very good looking in my opinion. Bobble-head is part of driving an 04 and before Jeep and its' solid axels that can run over anything. 05 is fast, really fast, and brakes well - if you can live with the style of it and mostly drive on road than I would buy one. Rear storage is almsot gone, it is so small. My two cents

Strength:

Tough. Rides tight as it did new and no squeeks!

Weakness:

Not real good gas mileage but it is an SUV. Have to have alignments every few months but I bought the lifetime alignment at Firestone.

I bought my Jeep in 2000 with about 40,000 miles on it and now in Nov 2004 have 105,000 on it now 4 years later and everything still works on it except a door lock. It is the inline 6 cyl 2 wheel drive. All I can say is that it has been truely AWESOME! Drives and runs like new. Only minor problems like eratic gas gauge that pops up every once in a while and one door will not lock with the remote now but if thats all then I can count myself lucky after hearing of all the disasters out there and having my Brother own a 2001 model that he is cursed with! I understand that the ones made in 98 were some of the good ones and I had been toying with the idea of getting a newer one next year but am afraid to now that I am reading this and talking to people in grocery store parking lots whom I ask about their Jeeps. So I am keeping this one until it dies even if its years from now and then I think I will try a Honda. Seems their reviews are much better. Too bad Chrysler has dropped the ball in their quality department. I have only spent a total of $100.00 on repairs in 4 years, a set of tires, and regular maintainance costs.

WOW!!! My 1999 has come along way in 5 years. 90% of what an X5 has to offer and half the price (2003/2004 Overland models only) The last of the Cherokees that look like the Cherokees. 2005 Jeep Montero should really be the name for next year's model. What a disgrace to the Jeep line. 2005 will be a flop for sales. The first time Jeep has ever taken a step backwards. 325 HP is not necessary. Please let's get back to reality and practicality. Jeep has been salvataged by the German's. Hitler was definitely in the design room. What a screw up. Buy a 2004 if you can find one. A work of Art for classic Jeep

Outside mirrors memory. OEM Goodyear Wrangler SRAs--worthless in all respects except that they wear like iron.

Most of my driving is in the city, but rugged offroad adventures are my idea of a good time on weekends. My '01 GC is far and away the best SUV I've every owned in all respects. I bought it off eBay in December '01 with 7900 miles on it. Now two years and nine months later, I've got 45,500 miles. Yes, I've had some things go wrong, but all were under warrantly and all were repaired at no cost to me. Well except for the memory mirrors. Both were replaced once and the driver's side was replaced a second time, but they still don't hold their memory positions. Overall I'm one extremely satisfied long-time Jeep owner.
