Grand Cherokee Lardeo V8
Strength:
- Seating comfort. - Ride quality. - Smooth V8 power. - Decent MPG (16/19). - Styling. - General fit 'n finish. - Predictable handling. - No internal rattles. - Better-than-average stock stereo (6-speaker). - Jeep off-road/poor condition capabilities. - Excellent turning radius.
Weakness:
- Warped front rotors at 10K miles (minor issue). - Soft paint/black scratches/marks easily. Purchased used in June '05 with 9800 miles. This is my first Jeep. After driving a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo LS for 65K miles, I had to trade it because of neverending vibrational issues costing me thousands w/o resolve. Test drove an '04 Laredo I6 and the '04 Laredo 4.7L V8. Both rode significantly better with more comfortable appointments than the Rodeo. Plenty of power in town and interstate. Seriously, this thing really goes like a bat out of hell. I just test drove a passat 1.8T (which every one I've spoken to says is a quick car) and it felt so doggish compared to the Jeep. Solid transmission shifts with predictable up/down shifting. Decent milage for a 265hp V8 (16 city, 19 hwy, subtract 1 mpg if running A/C). Sure footed starts on wet pavement. Cold A/C. Better-than-average sound from stock stereo (no subwoofer). 8-way power drivers seat allows me to find a comfortable position even on longer drives. Trip computer (with milage, service intervals, compass, trip, etc) is a nice touch. Visibility out front and sides is good, with only fair visibility out the back (higher rear window and largish rear off center bind spots - have to turn your head before lane changes, or get a couple stick-on bubble mirrors). Still very manageable even in Masspike traffic. Fit 'n finish is above average with better-than-average materials for a $30K domestic vehicle. No interior rattles! The ride is surprisingly smooth for a double solid axle design. Almost no bump steer on interstate. No noticable body wobble on uneven surfaces (common to the earier Cherokees). Predictable handling. Although the Jeep I purchased was used, I didn't notice the amount of scratches on the paint until it was delivered. I have the black large flake paint color with the black sport cloth interior. I think the paint must be a softer paint because it scratches very easily (or it could just be the fact that it's black and shows everything). A little rubbing clay and 1 hour's worth of elbow grease took 90% of them out. It did already have warped front brake rotors when I purchased it (didn't notice during the testdrive as I didn't make it onto an interstate). No big deal. I had the front rotors turned down (4/1000ths) and it fixed the problem. I see a lot of reviews here about warped rotors, and people go and have them replaced. Most times, you're better off having them turned down (resurfaced) because it'll not only immediately resolve the brake pedal vibration, but the rotors have already been heated up from driving and are less likely to warp than new rotors that haven't been heated up yet. The rear rotors didn't need to be resurfaced. The power moonroof is also nice. It's the first vehicle I've owed with one. Great in the New England summer. The foglamps are also a nice feature. They're not driving lights, but do throw additional periperial light which helps greatly in wet city/interstate driving. Overall, I'm not overly concerned about resale because I purchased used (someone else already ate $7500 in depreciation) and I got a fair deal with fair trade-in value, and I plan to own for 7 years. We'll see what the long term reliability looks like, but the price listed above included an additional 8/80k bumper-to-bumper. The only things it doesn't cover are wheels, tires, external lights, rotors, pads, and routine fluid changes. So far, I feel like I initially got a lot more vehicle for the money with the Jeep than I did with the Isuzu. Wish me luck. BRAKES, over all quality While I'm leasing this Jeep and I'm glad I dont own it. I got a great deal on a lease and that is why I have it. Its a 2004 special edition I6. At first I really liked the ride and 4x4 system they are truly nice and especially in the winter going thru a foot of snow like it wasn't even there. The interior has a nice layout with medium grade quality. I'm 6,3" and some cars dont fit me well but it is okay just nobody can sit behind me in the backseat. That is a complaint the backseat legroom is cramped. It has not left on the road stranded yet but I think it will someday. I have had it in the dealer a few times. Reset the computer, ac broke, brakes twice and there doing it again pulsating, etc. The ride is decent the I6 engine is adequate but for me a horsepower guy definitly underpowered, go for the 4.7 V8 its like a whole other truck, nimble, feels more sure footed, etc. Paint needs alot of TLC I detailed in my younger days and this paint is cheap, I wax mine at least once a month and its keeping its shine but scratches so easily right thru the paint to the ecoat. The gas mileage is okay it says 16 but I dont think it not accurate, it seems to be very thirsty it doesn't matter city or HW still 16, I haven't took the time to calculate it but I think its more like 13/14. Over all I have liked it but certainly not loved it, cheap quality and multiple dealer visits in the first year and a half is really unexceptable to me. That is why I cant wait to turn it. One more thing Chrysler knows the brakes are inadequate for the size and weight of the GC and will fight you about fixing them mine first started warping about 7or8K and I didn't go in till they got bad at like 12or13 and they did not want to fix them eventhough everywhere you read something about these vehicles the brakes get negative attention. Finally after arguing with customer care they finally repaired them and they were warped again at 20k so I'm not going to bother again just going to bear it till I can turn it in. I love this car. Seats are really comfortable. Seemed to hold up extremely well in my car accident. It has an awesome turning radius - hardly have to turn the steering wheel to get it to turn.
Weakness:
Just like all other SUV's, it does use more gas than I originally thought. I was recently involved in a car accident with my jeep. I was at a red light, and was slammed in the back by a guy who was going between 60-80 km/h. The body of my jeep was twisted, and the roof buckled. My insurance company has allowed 12 hours worth of frame repair (instead of writing the jeep off). My questions is: what is the strength integrity f the frame and the sheet metal after it has been repaired? I'm worried that my jeep is now compromised, and it will never be 100%. Does anybody have answers, or websites that I could look at? |

Everything about it I bought this Jeep brand new. Since I've owned it I've had a window air leak which took my dealer 3 trips to find and replaced 3 sets of warped rotors. The first set was warrantied but after 12 months and 12,000 miles you're on your own. Nothing like adding another car payment per year just to keep the brakes working correctly. I've been told from my dealer they deal with this problem DAILY and that Chrysler finally in 2005 switched the rotors they use. This car is a complete waste of money. I wouldn't recommend anyone buy one unless you want to be best friends with your local mechanic. I'll never buy another Chrysler product after seeing how they don't stand up and support their crappy vehicles. I've emailed them only to get a "canned, we're sorry but thanks for informing us" message back. I won't be replacing any more rotors as this car has a for sale sign in it. |

i think i got a LEMON.......... I bought this GC with 21,000 miles on it, thinking I was going to get a reliable car that would fit my lifestyle. During the 15,000 miles I have put on it I have had to repair a cracked head, blown head gasket, cracked intake manifold, new gas cap(20$ for cap and 100$ for comp. diagnostic) and warped rotors. Currently there is white smoke coming from under the hood that no one can seem fix and the engine is running rough which also no one can seem to figure out. I am just holding my breath until the next part breaks......... Similar Products Used: 1995 GC (had tranny problems) |

gas mileage could be better, but what can you expect with all the power! I LOVE my Jeep. I bought it used with 83k on it and it now has 109k. Have had no problems other than the brakes, but replaced the rotors with the slotted rotors and its been a year with no problems. I go skiing every weekend in the winter, and this vehicle flies up I-70 with no problems! So glad I bought the V-8. I test drove the 6 cyl, but it didnt have enought power for me. I highly recommend this vehicle. Similar Products Used: 94 Ford Ranger, 86 Jeep Cherokee |

Squeaky Shocks Usual MPG for an SUV This the first car I've ever purchased myself (21). So far I've had no problems with it and it has 6k miles. If I were to complain about anything it would be the squeaky shocks and gas mileage, but what would you expect buying a 4.7 L V8? I haven't got a chance to use the towing package or really roll down the windows because its constantly snowing in CT. I've gone on a few ski trips and so far no problems with snow or ice. I have slid once, but the front wheels grabbed the road and kept me from going into a snow bank. The check engine light came on for no reason, but there were no actual problems. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the car and would consider purchasing another Jeep. Similar Products Used: 1989 Jeep Cherokee Sport |

Radiator, heating, windows, power steering. Poor gas mileage, unstable on wet roads with minimal tire wear. This vehicle is a maintenance nightmare. I've needed break jobs done every 10K miles. Within the first 20,000 miles, there was a leak in the radiator. The battery died in less than 45000 miles. At 48000 miles the power stearing formed a leak. Now at 58,000 miles, the passenger side heat doesn't work and the driver side window doesn't go up or down. Similar Products Used: Dodge Dakota |
