Strength:

Great styling
Great ergonomics
handling
off road capability (sand, snow, mud)
cargo capacity

Weakness:

brakes are strong, but the rotors warp very quickly, there is an unofficial recall on the rotors, have your dealer replace them. Also, if they've been dealer replaced within the last 12 months/ 12K miles it's covered by the Mopar warranty if they've gone again (very likely)

My jeep leaks water into the driver side floor.

trouble starting every so often (fuel pump?)

transfer case leaking, re-sealed 3 times already

front passenger power window broken (wiring harness)

scary transmission skipping at 40 mph

scary shuttering on sharp right hand turns under acceleration
really annoying clunking when shifting into reverse
i'm just waiting for my rear diff to blow, blew on my 87 cherokee twice.

I too have been visiting this site for about 6 months, ever since I realized that I wasn't the only one with a 1999 JGC with annoying problems. I wish I had checked this site before I bought. In the last week there have been a bunch of really vague, yet totally positive reviews about the Jeeps. I've owned Jeeps since 1987 and am pretty faithful to the brand, but not so much that I would deceive potential buyers with short glowing reviews that lack any valuable information beyond "great car, buy this!" It's a slippery slope between those reviews and the annoying guy in the bad suit who sold you the sheet metal in the first place. Try and at least be thoughtful about your reviews. It's clear many people are having problems with this vehicle.

You have got to be kidding me! To tell people to stop whinning about a $35K vehicle which has more problems than a 68 VW Bus is plain ignorant. If you want to tell Chrysler, hey I'll buy whatever crap you put on the market as long as it has the name Jeep nicely attatched - go ahead. The purpose of these review boards is to let everyone know what they are buying. Sure the Jeep is great off road, and when I use if for off road I expect problems. But driving to Kmart should be cake for this vehicle.
FYI: I have a 99 with 41k miles, and my exhaust manifold just developed the crack everyone else has been talking about. How about it, how many people have the exhaust problem and the pull to the right? If you do, email me at b_t_kurth@yahoo.com

Strength:

Looks good

Weakness:

Poor gas mileage
weak a/c units (see service bulletins)
poor dealer backup

This vehicle was a problem from the begining. I will never buy a Jeep again. If I were to win one, I would give it away, but not to a friend or relative.
1. Loud injector noise (no cure per dealer)
2. Numerous A/C problems--smells, leaks, not cooling (spent over $2000.00)
3. Trans went out at 52000 miles (spent $2700.00)
4. Radio quit & had to be replaced after only 3 years (spent over $500.00)
5. Exaust manifold cracked (spent $950.00)
6. Window controls (spent $300.00)
7. Electric mirror control (spent $200.00)

Strength:

LOTS OF POWER!! big V-8, great for towing. I've got 125,000 miles on my jeep and it's doing GREAT! we've replaced the starter and the waterpump, and nothing else for the past 2 years. it burns a little oil but come on... it's got 125,000 miles on it... I get about 16 miles to the gallon and that's with hot roding it around

Weakness:

price, i've got the quadra trac system so you can't turn it of and just run in two wheels, which would save gas milage and be more fun for running donuts and peeling out.

bought the car in 1994 and have driven it to colorado with a huge trailer, we didn't have any problem, we even climbed pikes peak with the trailer on the back, and it's a freekin' massive trailer! I've have taken it off roading and it keeps up. it's pure stock! I love this car and would hate to have to get rid of it. my mechanic said don't use pensoil cause it gums up the heads, so for all of you jeep owners... DON'T USE PENSOIL! if you want a real SUV buy a jeep, but don't get leather interor... it's just wrong...

Strength:

I like the body style. Its a great looking SUV.

Weakness:

At 113K the transmission doesnt want to get up and go into first gear. The rear brakes grab when i try to slow down. I guess the previous owner didnt maintain the engine.

I would recommend jeep products. My 1991 proves they will go forever.

My 1991 jeep Cherokee Laredo was the best jeep. I paid 3,750 with 158k and sold it for 4,000 with 180k. I even wrecked it and it was still running. It ran great.

Strength:

It's incredible!..Most well rounded car I've ever seen or drove, The acceleration is uncomparable. The mesh grille and hood louvres look hard too. the seats are the most comfortable of any car I've sat in. On the highway you just cruise. I can't wait until a high-powered version of the new Grand Cherokee comes out, until then I'll stick with my beast.

Weakness:

The gas mileage is terrible (about 12 mpg) ...It's also hard to get used to the turning radius because of the 4wd, it always feels like you are driving over a log.

If you have the loot, and want to buy an SUV, this is seriously better than any others (including luxury brands)...Jeep for life.

Strength:

Style and looks, 0-60 in 6.8 seconds, great leather seats.

Weakness:

I am a prefered customer at the local gas station.

Excellent looks and the platinum paint has not a scratch in it after 2 years. I wish the wheels were 17" because these 5 stars are the best looking SUV rim around. Problems include: Engine ping even when using 94 octane gas, too many interior rattles, electrical problems, other than that she feels great even with 60,000 miles driven. Really good truck in wet or snow, suspension is very good, no complaints on the interior, and for a 4,200 lb vehicle she moves like a bat out of hell!!!!

Strength:

Looks, handling, and power, yes, the power of the V8

Weakness:

Limited room comapred to other SUV's, A/C controls, workmanship, poor build quality

This is my second Jeep, the first one was a 91 Cherokee, but I actually like the older Cherokee better. I have many problems w/ the Grand Cherokee. Steering creacks sometime, the automatic A/C never worked right, it's either too hot or too cold. I took it to the dealer three times but they still couldn't fix it. The steering column is too thick and I'm 5'11, 160 (in other words, normal built) but my right knee would hit the steering column sometimes when I take my foot off the gas pedal to brake. I have to tilt the steering wheel higher than I prefer to avoid this problem. The sun screen of the moonroof would rattle when I leave it open. So I have to close it all the time. Sound system sucks and one of the speakers is blown already. Bad experience with the dealer also (La Brea Dodge). I will never buy another Jeep again. I am really disappointed by this Grand Cherokee. I wil trade it in as soon, even though meaning I will have to take a big loss after owning the car for just 15 months.

Strength:

The V8 5.9 liter goes from 0-60mph in 7 seconds. It has 220hp which is great for hauling. The all wheel drive feature is great for up hill driving and the beach. It has great handling. It is very dependable and safe with all disc ABS breaks. Many standard luxuies such as power windows and locks, dual air bags, and a built in computer.

Weakness:

It shifts into gears very roughly. It is not very comfortable. The ride becomes very shaky at around 70mph. It has a very large fuel tank with bad gas mileage.

I paid around 32,000 at the time it was new. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves sports utilities and understands why the Jeep Grand Cherokee is the best one. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who can't handle a little roughness while driving.

Strength:

Muscular Looks, Off-Road Capability, Comfort/Ride Quality, Quadratrac (the best 4wd system to have in inclement weather), V8 Power.

Weakness:

None

My overall impression of my Jeep is that it is a great vehicle. It suits my needs perfectly. It has lots of room for people/cargo, a great 4wd system that inspires confidence in rain/snow/mud/etc, has lots of power for general driving pleasure/towing, and is a very comfortable vehicle when driven on long trips. What more could you want in a vehicle?
