Strength:

The interior is roomy, lots of cargo room. I love the being able to move the rear seats completley forward. It has a lot of power and I love the looks of the 95-98 model versions.

Weakness:

For years of closely watching the prices and reviews of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, I decided to purchase one. I bought my 97 Jeep with only 40K. It appeared to be in excellent condition and I didn't see or feel hardly any problems with it when I test drove it. When I asked about the inspection and the past vehicle service history I was told that it passed the certain point inspection with flying colors and that the only major problem that the Jeep had was that the brakes were replaced at 17,000 miles, well 23,000 miles they are being replaced again, new rotors (that were checked off as excellent condition but were in fact warped) and even after the rotors have been replaced, I still feel a pulsation in my brakes. Another problem is that my selec-trac 4WD has a lazy transfer case. When the transfer case was engaged in 4LO the Jeep starting making this grinding noise and bucking...As I type, my Jeep has been in the shop for a week with no word on when it can actually be looked at...talk about excellent customer sevice, yeah right!!! Another problem that I have found in the first week of purchase is that when the vehicle is driving down the road, without applying the brakes, there is a grinding/ metal to metal noise from the rear end on the right side. The dealer has been telling me that this noise is normal. I will agree with them to some extent, I mean there is always going to be a humming noise but not a grinding noise and metal rubbing against metal. Since my purchase, I was able to drive the vehicle for one week, then it went into the shop, then got it back and had it for four days and the transfer case started acting up. With as many problems as I have had in the first week in a half...I don't know if I want to contine to be a Jeep owner. I have to say that I am very dissapointed to pay $15,000 for this type vehicle and get these type of results from not only the vehicle, but from the Maker themselves.

I love the looks of the them, really sporty, but the vehicle is extremly expensive to maintain and to much of a headache to deal with constant battle with Chrylser and their supposed five-star warranties.

Brakes and road noise

BRAKES!!! At 15k miles had to have a 4 wheel tire rotation, front end alignment, and the rotors machined. The dealership/service dept. blamed my driving in the rain then getting the brakes hot for the warping! Go figure! Not much you can do when they're are only warrantied for 12k miles. We've just replaced the rotors again at 36k miles... hopefully this aftermarket brand will last a bit longer.

At 18k miles had to have leaking transmission lines replaced.

At 36k miles had problems with Jeep blowing fuses. Service dept couldn't locate the problem after keeping it in their shop for two days. My father, who is NOT a mechanic, located the problem within 15 minutes of being under the hood. A wire going to the catalytic converter was grounding out against the drive shaft.

As I type, my Jeep is in the shop (37k miles) because of noise and too much slack in the rear end. The ring gear and pinion are having to be replaced.

Strength:

Power (4.7 V8), impressive list of features

Weakness:

I have read all submittals on this site concerning the '99 models, so I can easily relate to all of the horror stories.
I have not had any major mechanical problems, but I have had many electrical problems--including the replacement of two BCM sensors (at $510 each).

The BCM sensor failure causes loss of all guages and power accessories. There is no precursor for this failure--your guages simply flatline (your windows, radio, heating/cooling system, sunroof, etc. follow).
The first failure was at 28,000 miles (I did purchase the extended warranty because I had owned a 1996 Dodge Avenger--I am a slow learner I suppose). My dealer replaced this sensor, but the same sensor has failed again at 43,000 miles (8-10 months later). I really had to pressure Chrysler to take responsiblity but they finally "bellied-up." I did have to pay $100 as a deposit.
I tried to explain to the Chrysler Service Rep. that obviously there is an underlying cause contributing to the failure of this sensor, and that simply replacing the sensor is merely buying time and not resolving the issue. I can't seem to drive this fact into either my dealer's or Chrysler's brain--which tells me that they are aware of a problem but are refusing to acknowledge it--a service tech. accidentally admitted that he had seen several of Grand Cherokees suffering from the same malady. The Service Manager, of course, seemed baffled by the symptoms and acted as if this condition was some sort of fluke.
I explained to both Chrysler and my dealer that they will be facing the same battle with me again when this newest sensor dies, (probably in about 15,000 miles), but they seemed unconcerned. Bottom line, I refuse to pay for a problem that was manifested while the vehicle was under the manufacturer's warranty but was misdiagnosed by the dealer until the warranty milage ran out.
I would not recommend any Chrysler product and, given the reports from recent news articles, neither would other consumers. Chrysler is in financial trouble--they want to blame their problems on friction between Daimler execs and Chrysler execs, but I feel that the friction is probably founded more in differing ideas on quality standards and customer respect between the two factions.

I've been noticing a large number of Grand Cherokee's with the new Quadra Drive II system having problems with the differentials. The pinion seals in both front and back keep leaking. I asked my dealer if this was a comon thing with the Quadra Drive and he said yes. I've replace mine 3 times since '99 (twice in the front, once in back differential)
anyone else have these problems?

Strength:

This is an update from my 04/07/2000 review. All strengths still applicable.

Weakness:

The vehicle has now been to the shop on four occasions to correct a very nasty stalling problem that happens when you are traveling at varying speeds in all sorts of traffic. The problem has been diagnosed three different ways - replacement of a cam sensor, replacement of a crank sensor(twice) and "reprogramming of the computer". I have had it towed four times to the dealership. The dealership admits this is very strange and have never seen this type of problem before. I asked DaimlerChrysler Customer Assistance for remedy in the form of a financial settlement or a new vehicle due to the serious safety implications and they didn't have much interest in pursuing a mutually beneficial solution. They said the only recourse is to seek arbitration, which I will gladly pursue.

The attitude of the dealership and Customer Assistance makes you wonder what all the big deal is over the 5 Star Customer Service program. Though I wrote two sincere letters to the Service Manager and dealership owner, I have not received one direct call or a letter from either. It appears that if you have a problem that the Service Department can't figure out, they choose to ignore you as if you were a nuisance.

I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone due to the seriousness of my recurring maintenence problem and the unwillingness of DaimlerChrysler to seriously address my concerns.

Strength:

Nice body style.
Smooth comfortable ride, go anywhere type of SUV.
4.0 engine has plenty of power.
If you are a type person thats on the go all the time, this is the SUV for you.
Love the Auto-dim rear view mirror.

Weakness:

After about 65000 miles, the Air Conditioner took a crap.
Our Jeep had a Recall for Front Brake Rotors, They seemed fine to me when I replaced Brake Pads 200 miles earlier. Took the Jeep to Cascade Motor. They replaced the rotor on the Jeep in one day, My wife picked up the Jeep and the brakes were squaking and chattering. Wife took it back to the Cascade and they said the build up on the pad is causing the noise. They cleaned it but noise continued. Then whenever the brake was applied the whole steering wheel was shaking like the rotors were warped or something.
Took it back to Cascade told them we want a new Rotors and Pad installed.
They refused. They had no idea what was causing the problem.
They pointed to a spot on the Jeep where the noise could be coming from.
I don't to put the service managers name in here but he was a total knuckle head. He treated my wife as if she was an Idiot,(She is a Mechanical Engineer)
Made a note to call Chrysler to complain.
Got tired of the noise and the Steering wheel shake, was putting my wife and son's life in danger, it just did not seem safe to me.
I decided to replace the rotors and pads my self.
Well, I will damned, problem solved. But I am afraid all that shaking may have caused some internal damage somewhere.
Not enough reliable Jeep dealers.
Two weeks before X-mas, the Transmission puked on us,WE had transmission rebuilt ($1500.00)
Infinity Gold stereo system on our Jeep is junk It has not worked correctly since 58000 miles.

Great in the snow. the full time four wheel drive is unbelieveable. Never skided out control in rain snow or mud. We've had this Jeep for about 3 years now and we love the way it looks and drives. Looking to buy a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee LTD. Other than Brake fiasco with the dealer, the vehicle has been running great. We now have 125,000 miles on the vehicle and still going strong. Just wish we had more reliable Jeep Dealers that are more Customer oriented and Friendly. What may seem fine to them is not fine with my wife's Very Keen ears.

Weakness:

Fairly typical for Jeep, plastic interior parts get loose, break, squeek, etc.. Transmission shifts hard, supposedly repaired by dealer - replacing " valve " in the transmission ???. Brakes squeek. Chrysler dealer's service dept does not appear to have tremendous amount of knowledge w/ Jeep.

$26,000. 3 yr, 60,000 mi. lease.
After reading the reviews and hearing all the problems of friend of mine is having w/ their 99', there's no way I can recommend the Jeep.
There is no doubt that the transmission, brakes & electrical system on this vehicle are defective. The fact that Chrysler has not stepped up to the plate to resolve these " common " defects forces me to abandonon any future purchase of any Chrysler product, especially the Jeep. I really wanted to buy " American ", but you can bet my next " MID SIZE " SUV will be a toyota 4runner. ( Ford, no thanks, similiar to Chrysler, their customer service stinks. Chevy, no thanks, the price tag they had on the
blazer was ridiculous. )

Strength:

Looks, ride, reliability, comfort, It's the only SUV with the combination of heated seats & mirrors, auto-dim reirview, flip-up rear glass and wheel mounted radio controls available.

Weakness:

Brake rotors wear out. I had mine rotated or changed several times. Gass milage but what do you expect from an SUV.

The in-line 6 engine looks like a throwback to the '70s. That is not a bad thing though, as it proves it's reliability. No major changes have been needed on this engine because it's design is so good. The V8 would be nice but I was on a budget and didn't plan to tow anything. This vehicle handles very well in poor conditions. It gives the driver a very secure feeling. I highly recommend the Grand Cherokee!

It has alot of room.
It has a nice body style.
It handles nice and has a semi-smooth ride.

Weakness:

At 3 yrs old the air conditioner and rear window wiper quit.
At 5 yrs old the windshield intermittent wipers quit.

I am a single mother and felt when I purchased the Jeep Grand Cherokee Loredo that I was getting a good vehicle. This vehicle not only cost me $8,000 more than any other vehicle I have owned, but also has cost me more in repairs. I love the Jeep, but I can't afford the upkeep. The normal maintenance is nothing compaired to the things breaking on it. I will not own one again. Also, you have to watch where you take it to be repaired. The dealer can really take you for a ride. Maybe because I am a woman. Any single woman out there beware. If you have two incomes you can afford this vehicle, if not, forget it.
