What a lemon! I realize that this was the first year for the Grand and one should never buy the first model year of a vehicle but what can I say? Have had Jeep for 5 years now and have too much money in it to get rid of it, bought with 90,000kms now have 200,00kms and everything went wrong with this thing, tranny shot at 150,000kms ($1700 fix) rear end went at 170,000 ($1900.00 fix), tranny problems ever since, dealer is clueless, 4wd engages when it wants too, was told it was due to uneven tire pressure, 4wd low rattles bad all the time, every two months something goes wrong with this thing, will never buy another jeep, had 95 grand that started on fire due to rear end? also a piece, had 84 cherokee, 85 cherokee, 91 cherokee, and never had problems till the grand cherokee, replaced fuel pump three times in one year? And why is it that chrysler charges $550 for a fuel pump with 90 day warranty when local wrecker charges $40 and gives a 120 day warranty? Biggest piece of crap I have owned, looking at perhaps buying new Yukon, tahoe, Never a jeep again,

Strength:

The looks on the faces of the cockey people who own those suped up Japanese and American race cars when my Jeep flies ahead of them. The 5.9 V8 is unbelievably fast. Zero-60 in 7 seconds flat (www.car-stats.com) Head turning looks and roar from engine and large exhaust pipe. 345 Lb-ft Torque!! Quadra-Trac 4 wheel drive is a lifesaver in adverse conditions. The full-time 4WD is fabulous off-road as well. The 4-Low gearing seldom has to be used, but is flawless when needed in horrendous mud and snow. Hood vents and chain-mesh grille are very visually appealing. Very high quality leather heated memory seats, wood, and metal inside this special edition 5.9 Limited. Infinity Gold sound system is superb, clickers behind the wheel are a convenient and safe idea. 33,000 miles and not a single problem yet. One couldn''t ask for a nicer, faster, more capable vehicle ever.

Weakness:

I average about 11-13 MPG but a heavy foot doesn''t help along with a Full-time four wheel drive 250 hp 345 lb-feet torque engine. Climate control computer makes too many decisions for me.

An absolutely superb vehicle in every aspect. I am astounded at the amount of complaints on the Grand Cherokee. This is my 4th Grand Cherokee and I have loved every single one of them. Had a loaded Explorer and 4Runner, they don''t come close in any aspect except gas milage.

Strength:

5.2 liter V8 provides lots of power. Excellent off-road capability if needed while maintaining smooth, comfortable on road manners--an excellent multi purpose vehicle. Reliability and build quality.

Weakness:

Gas mileage of course, but this is no worse than any other SUV of similar size and power. SUV''s in this class are awfully expensive.

I have owned this SUV since new and it has been a wonderful vehicle. I have had absolutely no problems except for a Technical Service Bulletin on the rear axle that was done by the dealer for free, and this was not a serious problem, just noisy. My Jeep has been comfortable to ride in, it is a great size for hauling people/stuff and still being able to park and maneuver through traffic. Overall, in my opinion, this is the best SUV in its class. There have been a lot of reviews on here from people who have had many problems with there Grand Cherokees. I believe that this really a well built and reliable SUV. I think that some people may have had lemons, but many others have probable had incompetant dealership service departments that do not diagnose and fix problems correctly, causing owners to go back again and again. Also, many probably do not look for Technical Service Bulletins that would correctly fix known problems.

Great ride, feels like you''re in a cadillac!, wonderfull styling inside and out, excellent v-8, solid automatic trans, best full time 4WD on the market, wonderfull soundproofing, no noisy "truck noises", great cd/stereo system, very comfortable leather 8-way seats, great abs/4 wheel disc breaks.

Weakness:

VERY small rear cargo space, bad idea to continue tradition of keeping spare inside cargo erea.

Like Colin from Colorado, I''m shocked to hear all the negative comments about the jeep grand cherokee, although I do agree that 80% of dealer mechanics are morons and dealers are a massive pain to try to deal with I think there must be more to these negative stories than what is being told here. Ever since Iacoca left Chrysler my hard Chevy lovin heart has softened to Chrysler products, and now that Diemler/Benz owns them I have even more faith in their products. When my girl friend asked me recently to help her find a good s.u.v. this fall my mind went amediatley to Chevy/GMC only to find apon test driving that the full size blazers were too big and were terrable gas guzzlers, and the S-10 blazers to small and clunky (aspecialy the funky feeling auto trans and torque converters), being an ex-mechanic I started to question my loyalty to G.M., and began looking at other sources, the jeep cherokee soon popped up as our best bet, it''s size was in-between a full size blazer and an S-10, but with the full sized option of a v-8, after test driving a grand cherokee we were in love, it drove LITTERALLY like a cadillac, not like the clunky tin can we experienced with the S-10, and forget about Ford''s death trap explorers, my best friend had rented one for a trip about a month before the Ford/Firestone scandle and he told me that he and his wife were scared to death of the vehicle, it drove so horribly on the freeway they were actualy affraid they weren''t going to make it home! As far as Dodge goes we liked their offerings very much, but felt they were over priced at the time because of their popularity.

Weakness:

Sways a bit in turns

We have owned this 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0l AWD for four years now. The Jeep has performed extremely well, both on and off road. It amazes me how the build quality seems to vary from vehicle to vehicle, as we have had zero problems minus oil changes and the like. After 66 thousand miles, the jeep is as rigid as ever, seems to be getting smoother, and gets about 20 MPG (mostly highway).

Apart from looks, none whatsoever any more.

Weakness:

Everything from the factory where it is built and the absolutely incompetent people that build it, to the dealer where it is serviced (another huge overstatement as they spend most of their time scratching there heads!).

Biggest damn mistake I ever made. Chrysler sucks and everyone knows it, but we buy these pieces of junk anyways! Keep away from the G.C. as you will truly be sorry. I have owned mine for a month, but much of that time it was sitting in the dealers service (that''s an overstatement!) dept. The tranny is making strange noises (which are considered normal by Chrysler standards only) and the diff leaks. The engine vibrates like crazy (7.5 on the richter scale) and this too is ''kinda'' normal. These mechanics aren''t even qualified to flip burgers as far as I am concerned! I have taken action to get my money back (something the gov''t helps you out with in Quebec with lemon laws).

can''t believe all the problems I''m reading about here. Not a problem with mine, and i do mountain driving every day and offroad from time to time. 16000 miles, getting about 18 mpg with the 4.9 V8. Quiet, comfotable, lots of ground clearance with the upcountry package. Better handling from a Lexus RX or Mercedes ML but $12000 more for those. My previous GC was a 95, , traded it at 80,000 miles, no problems except at 60000 about $1200, otherwise trouble free.

I dont even know what to do anymore with this thing. It doesnt run well, break problems, a new transmission and everything. I drive a lot, my 1998 Grand Cherokee has 115000 miles on it. My son also drove about 20000 of those miles probably pretty hard when he was 16 and 17 and had no car. Now he has a 1988 Pontiac Grand Am that he paid 1,000 dollars for and it runs better than my Grand Cherokee. I will get rid of it as soon as I can afford to. My wife has a 1996 Cherokee Sport, and it is a great peice of machninery. I dont know what it is with grand cherokee, I think I got a lemon.

I am sure I have missed some things. Believe me when I tell you this one will not be sitting in my drive way much longer. Never will I buy a Jeep again. Terrible gas mileage, very poor quality drivetrain

Several four letter words come to mind to describe this vehicle. I think I''ll use the G rated version "JUNK". After owning several MOPAR products, I was confident in buying this truck. Since we have bought it, we have to make two payments every month. One payment to the loan and the other just to keep it running! Luckily I am a mechanic and do most of the repairs myself. I can''t imagine what we would have paid in labor costs. In the past six months I have replaced both front wheel bearings, the transfer case, A/C condenser, front differential, front/back brakes, all U-joints.
