Strength:
Extremely comfortable, great infinity sound system, great offroad capabilities, nice interior and exterior, good onroad manners, and great inclement weather handling. Good acceleration (4.0). Great heated seats and outside mirrors. Good support from my dealership.
Weakness:
Absolutely the worse brake rotors and pads I have ever come to use. Engine compartment not protected enough underneath from off road debris. Mediocre auto climate control. When in use gives me spontaneous speed surges. Started at about 39,000 miles and haven''t been able to isolate the problem yet. Loose and squeaky driver''s seat. Driver''s leather seat cracking under two years. Back retractable cup holders very cheesy and easily breakable. No locking storage compartments in cabin. Rough idle especially in cold weather. A great vehicle as long as you have the time and money to fix the problems that come with it. I found that you must strictly follow the maintenance schedule. When you fix or replace parts it is important to do it with aftermarket products. This seems to make all the difference. Had a ''94 Laredo with many problems. After fixing them all, transmission included, I put 150,000miles on it without a problem. Sold it to a local woman who is still driving it today with no problems (4.0 six). My dealership is great but the parts D/C supplies them with I feel are subpar. I really love the ride and the amenites. The four wheel drive is the best and I love the style in and out. Because of this I take the time and money to correct many of the ugly problems it comes with. I found out, though, once you turn your Jeep into a hybrid with aftermarket products it becomes trouble free and a delight to drive. Reliability significantly increases and I don''t think another SUV in its class could come close to matching its comfort, handling, and off road prowess. In my opinion if your not inclined to do what I mentioned above stay away from this vehicle. If you are you''ll wind up with one great reliable SUV. Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD Laredo I-6
Strength:
Best SUV for offroading!
Weakness:
Very unreliable!!! This was the first new car that I have purchased. I bought the car 1 month after the release of the new Grand Cherokee design. The car has been in the service center more times than I can count. I have had the fuel pump replaced 5 times, transmission twice, rotors twice, entire rear-end replaced, drive shafts, transfer case twice. The idle fluctuates severaly and almost causes the car to die. They have told me that the fluctuation is within Chrysler specs. Overall I do not recommend buying this car unless they have greatly improved the reliability. |

brakes, have had them replaced about 4 times in the past six years I love my !996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. I always said that when and if it died, I would have it crushed and made into a coffe table! Now it is crushing time and she needs a heart transplant and a little cosmetic surgery after a recent wreck. However she has a lot of mileage on her for her age..127,000+ miles, and most have been on country roads, as I live in a very rural area. The inside of Myrtle(the jeep''s name) looks like a new one does. She has definitely been a great vehicle! Now it is time to purchase a new vehicle, and all my friends tell me that I need a sports car or something a little sportier. I test drove and researched many different vehicles, but guess which one I came home to? You guessed it a new 2002j Jeep Grand Cherokee. None of the others just had the same fit, back support that a Jeep provides. I guess the old saying is true, "Once a Jeep girl, that is what you will always be." Best V8 I''ve experienced. Fast, smooth and quiet (why did they get rid of it?????? 4.7L replacement must be good.) Comfortable drive. Great looking inside & out, fine interior appointments. Very capable in poor weather or off-road. Great stereo.
Weakness:
Horrible brakes. Questionable transmission. Lack of personal and cargo space - once inside, it doesn''t seem that big at all. Rear wiper arm replaced TWICE (same thing with my Explorer). I do love this car. I bought it used in ''00 and have since put 35k on it. Only been in shop twice(for brakes and rear wiper). Despite the weaknesses noted below, the strengths definitely outweigh them. I now have 70k on it and it doesn''t seem half that age. Similar Products Used: 99 Explorer Sport. Compared, Jeep is smoother and more responsive, refined. Explorer actually has more room though! |

Strength:
- powerful 4.7 V8 - great for towing boats, etc. - intelligent and unbelievably capable Quadra-Drive 4WD system - incredibly powerful factory Infinity sound system, great low and high frequency sound - gas mileage. 15 average MPG for stop and go driving, not bad for a powerful V8 - great styling, I always find myself looking back at it after I lock it - radio controls behind steering wheel, safe and convenient - sunroof, don''t by a Grand without one - vehicle computer, tells you everything you need to know and more - idiot proof lights, won''t let you leave ANY lights on (inside or out) for more than a couple of minutes to save battery, it also turns them on for you when it''s dark enough - you could fry an egg on the heated seats - too many more things to list
Weakness:
- with very low miles it had to go back to dealership once or twice to fix some first model year quirks (free of charge) - noisy transmission from day one, but w/70,000 miles, still going strong - an unnecessary amount of cheap looking plastic parts inside, even in a Limited - heated seats get too hot, even on low, will make your ass soaking wet with sweat Overall an excellent vehicle. The 4WD (Quadra-Drive) system is unmatched in any SUV I''ve ever driven, 235 horsepower to only one wheel if need be. A great highway car when you''re not grille-deep in mud (where it is also superb.) Very powerful with relatively good gas mileage, plenty of luxury, solid construction... very safe car. NOTE: if you plan on picking up a ''99-''03 Grand Cherokee, DEFINITELY invest in the Up-Country package if you plan to off-road even the slighest bit (full skid plates, heavy duty gas shocks> 1-2 inches higher off ground than normal Grands, tow hooks, extra transmission cooling tank. Similar Products Used: 1994, 1996, 1998 Grand Cherokees - all with good experiences unlike I''ve read in other reviews - transmissions tend to give out after 100,000 mi. 1997 4Runner - doesn''t come close to Grand 1998 Bl |

Looks and ride
Weakness:
Everything else I''ve leased this vehicle for about 2 years and 4 months. The reason why I chose this one was because I liked the way it looked and it had a very nice ride compared to my previous S-10 truck. But I can tell you that I will never buy another Jeep product or recommend one. So far I''ve had this list of problems: 1. Fuel pump replaced twice. 2. Driver side window motor. 3. Front Driver side lock 4. Front passenger side lock. 5. Rear passenger side lock. 6. Rotors turned twice. 7. Front wheel alignment twice (Still pulls to right) I know there will be more problems to come. I know 2 other people who have the same year and model Jeep and have had similar problems, except they''ve had transmission problems. I guess I will look forward to that one in the future. The main problem currently are the rotors. I''ve heard the brakes are made of a harder material than the rotors, so the rotors will wear and warp faster. It should be the other way around. |

Quadratrack, Good off-road performance
Weakness:
Can''t take off road as it is too far from service center. Noisy engine (supposedly fixed later). Terrible A/C. I just dumped my ''94 JGC Laredo with Quadratrack. I think the biggest mistake (and if I hadn''t done it, I probably would have loved my Jeep!) was getting the 6 cylinder. I read too many reviews stating the I6 was nearly as good as the V8. When I went to buy, my wife told me that Jeeps had inherently noisy engines and so it didn''t concern me that the engine had a tick. I still think that the sales people are laughing. I only heard 2 other Jeeps in the past 8 years anywhere near as noisy as mine. Of course the service center said mine was "middle-of-the road". But that aside (this just caused a lack of piece of mind), the A/C had a permanent odor. It never went away for more than 2 days. The rear diff seal was replaced about every 8 months, the crankshaft pully fell off twice, it has numerous leaks, the tranny exhibited the known issue with going in to gear when cold (but dealership would never fix), just after it was bought the fuel lines opened up while driving down the street. Sadly, I forgot who LIED to me (the dealership or Chrysler themselves) saying it was a known manufacturing defect that was already corrected, because the NTSB would have LOVED to investigate that one. The other issues, I would just consider normal failures (eg. CPS failure and stuff like that). In other words, when it ran it was great, but that wasn''t often enough... good ol'' quality control. Oh, once a PowerAid Throttle Body Spacer was installed, the engine ran much better (not as strained), but I never saw the promised MPG increase. Still, I recommend it just for the decreased engine strain. Due to all the trouble, I am giving it a much lower rating. This is compounded by Chryslers unwillingness to stand behind their product (OK... their representatives, ie. multiple dealerships) Similar Products Used: Suburban, 4Runner, Montero |

Limited 4WD
Strength:
Comfortable; not too noisy, considering the 4WD transmission and tire configuration; room enough for any toys you want to bring along (DVD player comes to mind); confidence-inspiring in poor weather.
Weakness:
High center of gravity takes some getting used to; fuel economy (with the 5.2 liter) is nothing to brag about (15.6 mpg after one year, including over 10,000 miles of interstate travel). We bought the Jeep because we got tired of asking friends to help us out every time we bought something larger than a table lamp. It has been great in that regard. We can now pick up most items we buy without having to pay extra for delivery. It has also been great on trips - the second reason for buying it. We have taken two 3,600 and two 1,800 mile trips, which account for well over half the total mileage on it to date. This leads me to the disappointing aspects of the Jeep. Those trips were all on I-10 and I65/85/95. There was little, if any, braking in all those 10,000-plus miles. Nevertheless, at its 18,000 service, I was told that I needed new front brakes (5% remaining), the combustion chamber needed decarbing, the injectors needed to be flushed, the throttle body needed cleaning, and I needed a new air cleaner. These latter services, I was told, should be performed every 12,000-15,000 miles. Inasmuch as they were some $280, not to mention the $150 brake service, I am now looking at the most expensive vehicle I have ever owned in terms of needed services per year. At this rate, regular maintenance will be over $500 per year. You might inquire about expected maintenance prior to buying a Jeep. Similar Products Used: None |

If you are looking for a stationwagon then go get your CRV, Explorer, or Envoy. If you want a great truck that will take you to the top of a mountain, negotiate the perils of metropolitan traffic, and arrive at your destination holding all of your gear and passengers safely, then get a Jeep! Any true Jeep owner knows that these trucks have NO WEAKNESSES! I bought my Jeep used at 30K miles right after I graduated from college, and now have just 47,000 miles on it and absolutely adore it. I have the inline 6 4X4 fully loaded. I got a great deal on it with a bumper to bumper warranty to 70,000 miles. I will admit that I have had it in the shop once to replace approximately $1500 worth of powertrain equipment (again the warranty -get one!) I am having the rotors turned at 50,000 miles. I have absolutely abused this Jeep since I got it. It handles my daily commute outside of Atlanta, and is unbelievable off-road. It goes anywhere!, My buddy bought a Discovery and kicks himself for paying for the more exprensive SUV everytime he rides in the Jeep. As far as Jeep reliability, my fiance has a ''94 Grand Cherokee with 182,000 miles on it. -It runs like a top! Change the oil, get it serviced.
