Compact capable vehicle, not a bulky incapable Tahoe,Expedition, or Land Cruiser.Superb Stock 200watt Sound System. Great towing(my 20ft. 4000lb boat and 25 ft. RV).Wet weather driving control! Driving seat comfort for long 4-6hr trips. Acceleration. The Best off road entrance/exit angles around. 4 wheel disc brakes. It got me,my buddies, and a trailer full of dirtbikes back home 250 miles with a bent front axle caused from cresting Oldsmobile Hill(a huge steep sand hill in the middle of the desert) in Glamis CA about 8 times in a row, AWESOME! Just an all around fun SUV built for tough, difficult off road use and abuse.
Weakness:
sure i had some leaks that the dealer took care of(front/rear diffs/transfer case) but i took it to hell and back. I had flawless service at Orange Coast Jeep in Costa Mesa CA. They even took me home when I was out of their area. highly recommended dealer! Lease is up,have to get used to another one(2003 JGC Overland) First of all, being an previous owner of fast cars, I chose this SUV over others for pure acceleration and 4x4 capabilities. It has out-performed them all-4x4 or not! I have blown away a newer 911 (in the rain of course). It simply has the best 4x4 traction system around. The first weekend i owned the vehicle i went on an off road trip to Ocotillo Wells,CA in Oct of 2000. My buddies,as a joke, secretly entered me into the annual sand drag race that weekend. I went along with it after hearing my name being called on the loudspeaker to pull my vehicle up to the starting gate. I lowered the tire pressure to 9 lbs(cause they were bone stock),loaded 3 of my friends in,and lined up. First i raced against a 1997 4x4 Chevy Silverado, then a 2000 GMC Denali, then some mid 1980 Jeep truck, and finally a fix up older Jeep CJ. In amazement to my friends watching and the 1000 or more spectators I roosted them all and took home a 1st place plaque! Its all on video. Thanks to this Quadra-Drive system that was just one of the highlights of owning this capable vehicle. On top of this great overall performance I show property in plush comfort as a Realtor to my clients daily. Where can you get the best of both worlds! JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE OVERLAND
Strength:
265hp HO engine smooth quiet ride excellet all wheel drive luxurious interior distinctive look (Jeep, theres only one)
Weakness:
Lack of rear air vents No stability control program I did alot of research before buying this vehicle. Having previously owned a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer (worst riding vehicle ever owned)I was leary of buying another SUV. So, I drove everything on the market before making my purchase. In comparison to the other SUV's, the OVERLAND has a smoother, quieter, more stable ride. The interior noise levels are suprisingly low, even at speeds above 90 mph. The OVERLAND interior is one of the most luxurious "truck" interiors on the market, rivaled only by the new Navigator. I love the real wood interior trim, and the partial suede on the extremly comfortable heated power leather seats. The engine with its 265hp and 5 speed automatic is amazingly quick (I've read articles with 0-60 times of 6.7 sec), couple this with one of the best all-wheel drive systems on the market, and this Jeep is more stable and predictable in the rain than most vehicles are on dry pavement. The only complaint I have with the interior is the lack of air-conditioning vents in the rear. The OVERLAND is a little pricey, but when compared feature for feature to its competition, it stacks up nicely. Strength:
Great off road suv and extremely comfortable on and off road in most driving condition.
Weakness:
Expensive to repair and need to improve the brake component. Still don't understand why the Jeep never have problem when it's new, but after having to replace the brake and rotor I have a lot of problem with vibration in steering wheel during braking. Great looking all around SUV and run smooth for the first two years around to 50K miles. The 4x4 handle smoothly on the soft sandy beach. I used to drive the Jeep out close to the water line whenever I do beach dive (SCUBA). It was great, until I have to replace the brake pads. Turn out all 4 rotors and the shocks needed replace also. I took the Jeep to PepBoy to have them work on it. Ever since then I have problem with vibration in the steering wheel whenever I step on the brake (possibly due to warped rotors). |

Seats everyone comfortably. Great speakers and nice suspension. Love the 7 year, 70,000 mile warranty that it came with. Best price for the moonroof package.
Weakness:
Haven't found anything except I put a thin ring down and it slid under 4 wd console - $70 was the estimate to remove console to recover it, oh well. Gas mileage is better than I expected. The ride is smooth and quiet. No problems with anything. Easy to park, nice steering. Not top heavy at all...Have not taken it off road except for some easy two tracks and it did great. Strength:
Still the best looking SUV in my book. Decent non-truck like ride, wide cabin (wider than most mid sized SUV's - Pilot may beat it now). Great hauling capacity. True 4X4.
Weakness:
Rotor warping, defective replacements as mentioned above. Also, transmission is a bit clunky when going into reverse or into forward, at times. This is my second Grand Cherokee, and the last. It has been wonderful in terms of room, looks, towing, and comfort, but I have had to replace the brake rotors three times in 45,000 miles, which I find unacceptable. Brake rotor technology has not changed much, and between manufacturers one finds differences in rotor thickness, swept area (which Jeep increased from the prior generation), heat dissipation characteristics, and so on. But to have the rotors last 10k miles is wrong - i would not complain if it was a fluke set of originals, but to have the dealer replace them and have them fail, with the characteristic pulsation with light to moderate breaking, is a design defect. To add insult, the dealer would not replace them free - I suppose I could lean on Chrysler a bit. Interestingly, posts here and at other sites show a common problem; I even had a guy in line behind me at the service counter with the same issue. Other than that letdown, the GC has been wonderful. I have hauled trailers to it's full capacity, ran through 12 inch deep snow, and taken my prior generation GC on the famous Rubicon trail and others in the Sierra Nevadas when i used to live in CA. I would highly consider buying off the residual now I'm at lease end, but the reliability factor from personal experience, and from various online sources, predicts a dangerous gamble. Furthermore, my wife refuses, who bases her expectations on the foreign (Japanese) cars we and friends have owned. She is through with the Jeep (the first one had unexpected problems, too), and will defect to the Japanese. Reliability is at the top of her requirements, and its her turn to choose Similar Products Used: Prior generation GC, new Explorer, Trooper, Montero Sport, Jimmy, 4-Runner (at 6'2", have no headroom) - all except the Jeep were rented, test driven, or owned and checked out via friends. |

Honda Prelude
Strength:
Great handling, gas mileage, fun to drive, solid no matter what speed, just a great car!!!!
Weakness:
Sqeaking brakes prevelant with this model after so many miles, not ideal for winter driving, low to the ground (tends to bottom out easily). This was my first car I ever bought and I have to say that I really lucked out. In the three years that I've owned my car I've had only minor repares like replacing brake pads and a battery. You'd never be able to tell that the car has over 130,000 miles on it by the looks or the handling. The handling is impressively smooth even at high speeds. It's a very reliable car. I've never had it stall or break down and overal it's just a fun car to drive. I would deffinately say that my prelude has lived up to the Honda tradition of quality. Similar Products Used: Chevy cavalier, Plymouth Reliant. |

Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
Strength:
It does look good but basically screams "urban cowboy". I'll give credit where credit is due and it isn't due here. I've seen a lot of Jeep WJ's and Cherokee Sports off-roading but never a Grand Cherokee. Most of them have running boards or side steps and these moulded grill guards or whatever they're supposed to be. However, there is quite a bit of legroom (more than my Disco) and cargo space and the engine is pretty powerful (what's a strength here turns into a weakness in the fuel mileage department).
Weakness:
Gas mileage SUCKS! I can't believe how bad this thing is on gas. Land Rovers are notorious for being bad on gas but this Laredo is worse. For the 8 days I had it, I only put on about 200 kms (and that's pushing it) and I went through 3/4 tank of gas! My Disco can almost do that on 1/4 tank and it runs a permanent 4WD, not this pseudo "full-time" stuff that Jeep claims (see summary for further explanation). Blindspots are pretty bad in this thing too. Handles more like a car, which in most cases is a good thing but this thing has the centre of gravity of a truck, so not good. It rolls a bit and on cornering or just turning, the front end dips like crazy and the whole truck leans heavily. Steering is too light. Way too much power steering, can't feel a thing. Truck feels "light". Braking is terrible. The thing feels like it doesn't want to stop...which contributes to the poor handling. Uncomfortable seating position (and I'm not tall). Kept wacking my heading getting in and couldn't find a decent driving position. I think I can honestly say that I gave this truck a fair try. I had it for 8 days as a loaner while my Land Rover Discovery was at the bodyshop. I wanted to know what the big deal was with these vehicles so I rented one while I waited for my Disco to come back. Driving it for 8 days didn't make me change my mind very much. In fact, at the end of the 8 days I couldn't wait to get my truck back. I actually tried to exchange it for a car after two days but the rental place had none left. First off, everyone and their dog has one of these things! Everywhere you look, there's a JGC and it's a good chance it's the same color and model too. Honest to god this happened to me. I went somewhere in this truck and when I came back to the parking lot I couldn't find it! Not because I forgot where I parked but 3 other people parked theirs near mine. Same color, same model. Had to stand there and click the remote lock to see which one's lights flashed. The hood looks enormous from inside. You can't see the front edge of the vehicle because the hood curves up slightly before it curves down so you have no sense of where the front is. I wouldn't want that for off-roading (and yes, I take my Disco off-road). The brakes are really spongy for some reason. The truck never feels like it wants to stop. You have to depress the brake pedal quite far to get it to come to a complete stop. I didn't think handling was very good. It drives like a car but has the centre of gravity of a truck so the vehicle leans or feels tippy. People think Land Rovers feel tippy (not a problem in new Discos) but I think this GC was way worse. I mentioned down below that fuel mileage sucks. It's really, really bad and that's coming from a Land Rover owner. Don't always believe what manufacture specs say. Those are typically optimum numbers, although you sometimes see better (like mine but only slightly better). This thing was much worse than what I expected and as I said below, on a pseudo "full-time" 4WD. Let me clarify this point. If you can spin your back wheels, that's not full-time 4WD. If power is only shunted to the front wheels when they slip but predominantly powered by the back wheels, then that's not really "full-time" 4WD is it? Land Rovers have permanent 4WD which means 100% power to all 4 wheels all the time hence no slippage. I spun the back wheels on this Cherokee on gravel lots Similar Products Used: Land Rover Discovery (own), Nissan Pathfinder (owned), Ford Explorer (rented for a week for a company road trip - not putting miles on my own vehicle), GMC Jimmy (rented for a week - same reason as fo |

Strength:
Smooth, lightning acceleration. Luxury car interior and appointments. Exterior design. Fun to drive. Feels strong and safe.
Weakness:
Controls poorly placed. Drivers seat uncomfortable. Brake pedal poorly positioned. Noisy drive train or brakes. Goodyear HP tires noisy. Poor braking. Poor mileage, 13.5 city, 16.5 highway. Headlights weak. No gas tank filler door lock. Antenna doesn't retract. Fuel tank (23 gal)too small. Researched this year model on Internet extensively then bought on Internet. got extended warrantee from 5-star dealer. One owner vehicle had been well-maintained under extended warrantee and was in perfect condition with 82,000. Secured all maint. records. I didn't realize all-wheel drive reduced gas mileage 10%. This vehicle is a snow, rain, and poor-road-condition car which I didn't really need. Would be a great value (at the price) if I did. Will replace all rotors with drilled and slotted rotors, and use ceramic pads. Will replace tires to reduce noise. Will modify engine intake and exhaust to increase economy. May dump 4-wheel drive components and go to 2-wheel. Considering HID headlights. Similar Products Used: 1980 K-5 Blazer, 1986 Corvette |
