Good looking vehicle.
Weakness:
See Summary. Bought used, loved it at first but have had many brake & rotor problems after hitting 140,000. Brakes replaced more than once; rear end has to be replaced now; warned that the rear axle might fall out on the road any day now. Kids don't want to ride with me because of the embarrassing noise & grinding. Rear hatch latch shot, without excessive use. Headlight fixtures loose - headlights blink on & off while driving. Piece of junk!! Similar Products Used: N/A |

Although my mods brought mileage up to about 14 city, 20 highway, it seems it could be a little better, but with all the power, its not much of a compliant. I get 11-12 towing the KIT 22LT travel trailer around the NW. Bought Jeepers as a 2 year old and used it daily for the first two years. Now use it to pull a 22' travel trailer on vacations. Only trouble in 4 years is the water pump seal started seeping at 65K mi. Otherwise, it's been great! I have a Borla cat-back, K&N intake, Jacobs electronics, Bilstein shocks, Michelin LTXs. Factory leather heated seats (really cozy), A/C, PW, PL, PS, trip computer, Infinity CD/Cassette, tow pkg., etc. Similar Products Used: 1991 Mazda Navajo |

looks attractive, very comfortable ride when traveling long distance.
Weakness:
Continous brake problems (rotor flaw)which chrysler will not admit or take responsibility for. They should be recalled and replaced so problems would not keep re-ocurring. Many electrical problems such as transmission sensor, security not working at all, electrical window malfunction, vehicle keeps running even when the key is taken out of the ignition. When headlights are turned on the interior dome lights all come on at once. Hard to start in the morning. This car is a lemon. Do not buy!! They may look good but the repairs are extensive. Brakes had to be replaced after 1200 miles and rotors were machined. 200 miles later the brakes began to shake when applied. Went back to the dealership and rotors were turned. 300 miles later the same problem returned. Was told that the rotors were warped and would have to be replaced. Again new brake pads. I was also told by the dealership service department that the problems with the brakes had to due with the way the vehicle was being driven. In other words the dealership did not want to admit any responsibility for the defective brake problem. Approximately one year later the transmission stopped shifting between second and third gears. I was told by the dealership that it was not under warranty and that it would cost somewhere between 2000 and 3000 dollars to repair. I then took it to a different dealership whould contacted Chrysler who assumed partial responsibilty but I still paid out 500 dollars for the repairs. Another 1 1/2 later and the transmission has developed similar problems. It has been sitting in my driveway for almost a month as I cannot afford the constant repairs. There has been a host of electrical and sensor problems which repair shops cannot seem to repair and diagnose. I now have to replace the front CVC joints after 146, 000 miles on top of the transmission repair. I do a lot of out of town travel so most of those miles at least 65 percent are highway miles. I don't tow anything. The gas milage is horrible I would not recommend this nightmare of a vehicle to anyone. Again I warn anyone who might be thinking about purchasing a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee DON'T DO IT !!! You will save yourself time, money and frustration by purchasing anything else. major see above review this is our third jeep and our last as soon as our lease is up we are done with jeep! if i am lucky i may get to occassionally drive my car when the security system doesn't malfunction and think it a damn stolen vehicle!!!!!!!!!!! warped rotors, brakes replaced twice, drivers heated seat failed, annoying rattle, clunks horribly when put in reverse. transmission slips occassionally. squeeks over every bumb. has been in the shop off and on for 30 days for the security system failing. they have supposedly replaced three different things and yet we still have a problem. the car has been towed 5 times leaving us stranded on several occasions in other cities. and it is back at the dealership again for the same dumb thing. |

Drives like a dream in the snow! All time 4 wheel drive makes life easy. Stereo rocks! Leather seats are great with kids! Looks great! Tows better than our pickup truck. We call her the rental. We lease, but plan to keep her. I've had her for nearly 3 years and she's still like brand new. My daughter drew circles on it with a rock a couple days after we brought it home. Seemed very deep, but wheeled right out!
Weakness:
The warped rotors were not covered under warranty. The heated seat was, but took 4 months of back-order. I have a light that comes on when the gas cap isn't tight enough, but I think I have a faulty gas cap. Gas mileage isn't great, but it's an SUV. Mileage is much worse on our V8. I walked in to the dealership to JUST LOOK and there she was...A gorgeous, steel blue Grand Cherokee with all of the goodies. Most of the problems that I've had were with the dealership. As far as the Jeep goes, Love It! I've had warped rotors, and my heated seat stopped working. Had them both fixed with minimal cost. I do have some strange problem with my steering wheel. It seems to be melting in the spot that I hold most often. (It was a program car, maybe my chemical make-up doesn't mix with the cheap cologne of the previous driver-but who's does?) Loved it so much, my husband got a Jeep too! My next purchase will be a Wrangler. Just waiting for the right color. Similar Products Used: My parents drove SUV's before that was a common term. haha ALL THE PROBLEMS. See Above. Oh My God! DO NOT buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Mine has been nothing but problems. My lease just ended a couple weeks ago and I am SO happy. No one can believe my horror stories about this vehicle except me and my own family who has to suffer through it. Many problems werent even covered under warranty. Jeep always found a way out of it. I had 33,800 on this pile of ______(fill in the blank) and so far, 1. Needed a new Power Window Motor NOT under warranty-- $175 2. Three times now I have had to be towed, as the fuel system was not delivering fuel to the engine 3. Suspension squeaks every time I go over a bump Under Warranty to my surprise 4. HORRIBLE rattle from dash board over every single little pothole. NOT under warranty -- $75 labor 5. Right Power Side Mirror stopped working NOT under warranty--- $125 6. Was burning oil and pouring smoke ALL over the road. (new head gaskets replaced, NOT under warranty)-$350 7. Water hose went bad, antifreeze sprayed everywhere causing the Jeep to overheat and smoke 8. Bad Distributor left me stranded on the way to school ON the freeway 9. Engine makes horrible squealing noise when air first comes on (fixed 3 times under warranty) 10. Outside temp. gauge reads 90 degrees when it was around 50. 11. The Driver's seat squeaks when you lean back-- leather seats lost their support 12. Takes 3 cranks of the key to turn over in the morning 13. Pours out blue smoke from exhaust pipe when engine is cold 14. Rear Defroster does not work LASTLY 15. the transmission slips about 3 times between 1st and 2nd gear. Dealer calls this "excessive wear" which equals about $2,000. I say NO WAY. Im not paying for that. If they want to take me to court for the 2 grand, I'll file a counter suit for all the problems that SHOULD have been under warranty. The vehicle had been leased for 3 years/36,000 miles ($329/month) and I had ALL those problems. Ridiculous isn't it? I pray for the next person that buys that vehicle! Take it on the freeway if you go for a test drive and check out the horrible suspension! Gets everyone carsick. You MUST NOT buy a Grand Cherokee. You can see by other posters that they are all lemons! Jeep should do a 100% recall and give everyone their money back! I REPEAT DO NOT BUY A JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE Another gripe I had was that the 4.0 I-6 has very little spare power in this heavy SUV and only returns 12.8mpg city and averages only 15.2mpg! Most other SUVs have much more power and still average 15-16 city and it has very limited spare power if you want to accelerate quickly Buy at your own risk. If anyone wants to see the web site I made for it (before it was traded in), its www.cardomain.com/id/4x4_4_life This vehicle has only been off road 3 times. Watch out '99 owners! I am finding out that the '99 models, the year they changed, did not have the kinks worked out-TRANSMISSION & BRAKES ARE MAIN PROBLEMS. EXPENSIVE REPAIR COSTS-MINE IS IN THE REPAIR SHOP EVERY OTHER MONTH! TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS!!! Transmission had to be replaced last year-have never hauled anything. It has always made a "slamming" sound when put into reverse -dealer states that this is "normal" for jeeps! Brakes replaced twice last year, seals leak, power window problems, alignment, & other problems. |

fun to drive around in the snow. I have pulled many people out of ditches with jeep. Looks great, love the leather.
Weakness:
very expensive to fix just about anything. Brakes wear very quickly, gas mileage sucks. I bought my jeep with a 160,000 miles on it. I had no problems for the next 40,000 miles. My jeep now has 210,000 the rear end needs ring and pinion gears replaced, I just replaced the inner bearings, water pump went, and am now on my 3rd set of brakes and rotors, back lift gate seems to be going, ongoing electrical problems, not to mention a rattling underneath the car when idoling, and air conditioning is not working. It has made it 210,000 miles though with minimal engine problems. Similar Products Used: 1988 Grand Prix LE |

An annoying rattle when the car is warm and then cools down. I think it is coming from the glove compartment. If any one else has had this problem, please let me know as the dealership can not find the rattle??? Did they actually look? I feel that I am wasting my time with them. Good car, but I have an annoying rattle. |
