Looks good, ride okay for SUV

Weakness:

Fuel injection tube, heated seat, noise from under the hood. Breaks down so often you might have to get a tent so you can stay at the dealer when they fix your car.

If you want to waste your money & TIME, go ahead buy this junk. I had to take my Jeep in four times for fuel injection tube and twice for heated seat for driver side. Actually I might have to take it in again because my car wouldn't start again..... Even after purchased the extended warranty I had to pay $320 for heated seat for the driver side. Jeep dealers have all different warranty too. I contacted the distric manager and the jeep corporate about my expense, they didn't even bother to investigate it. They send me short email stating that sorry to decline your request. I reply to their email, they still reply back without the answer of my questions and just short sorry to decline your request. Very bad bad customer service. Jeep doesn't care about one or two customers.

Too many times you are told that only those that are dissatisfied will write a review. Let it be said that this one is no different. I purchased my 19990Grand Cherokee, V6, 2-wheel drive vehicle "slightly used" from a respectable dealer. I have had the breaks and rotors replaced on an alarmingly regular basis. It seems that one sensor or another goes out every 4-6 months. My last trip to the dealership cost $2300 to replace 4 sensors, most costly being the throttle and cruise control sensors. My biggest complaint, however, is an idling problem. I've come to the conclusion that it is an inherant birth defect with this vehicle. Whenever it is idling or put in reverse, the RPM's either drop and then surge or stall out altogether. Amazingly, I have brought the vehicle to 4 individual dealers and not one has been able to fix or tell me what the ailment is. But each one did replace at least one sensor! In short, I will never consider buying a Jeep or Chrysler product again. If I can't trust a vehicle enough to allow my family to use it, I surely will not make a recommendation to anyone else considering purchasing a vehicle. And just to show that I am not a negative person altogether, I did submit a glowing review for the 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe.

BRAKES, BRAKES, BRAKES!!!! Motor went out on driver side door lock.

We bought our 2000 Jeep GC Laredo V-6 new. When my wife first mentioned the brakes at 25000 miles I thought she was just being overly sensitive. Boy was I wrong. I couldn't believe these brakes were such a piece of junk. While the rotors warp it is the Calipers that really cause the problem. In 1999, they went from using a steel piston to using a ceramic one(like billiard balls are made of) supposedly to dissapate the heat better. WRONG!!! They end up swelling up and sticking causing pressure against the rotor causing it to warp prematurely. I have had the rotors turned twice and replaced them all once along with all of the calipers only to have the problem arise again in 2 months. My car has 83,000 miles at this point and we couldn't take it anymore. This was a problem that wasn't going to go away so I traded down to a 98 Jeep to get the steel piston in the calipers. I have a 1995 GC limited that I've had since 1997. It now has 204,000 miles on it and it still runs great. It is a V8 4x4. I would recommend the V8 over the V6. The only problem I've had with the 1995 is the radiator. I replaced it 3 times. The cooling system is not very good. Good thing they have the computer system to tell you about the low coolant or I would have burned the motor up several times. Anyway, I lost several thousand dollars having to trade my 2000 jeep away long before I wanted to just because of the BRAKES!!!!! Someone should have to pay for producing shoddy components. All because they wanted to save a little overall body weight and dollars. I say sue the hell out of Chrysler.

Rotor warpage and lack of a true 'fix' from the dealership.

Great Vehicle EXCEPT for the notorious brake rotor problems with the 99-02 Grand Cherokees. We are going to file a class action suit against Chrysler for the citizens of FLorida to get this resolved. A separate lawsuit has already been filed for residents of New Jersey. We need a couple of potential plaintiffs from Dade, Broward amd Palm Beach Counties that have had the 'rotor experience'. There is no fee to join the class action suit and the law firm representing us is paying for all expenses. Please send an email to me if you have an interest in joining this lawasuit.

Leased a 98 grand cherokee laredo to see if we would like it and it turned out to be a charm. Had to have rotors turned at 50,000 miles but never had any problems with it during the 3 year lease. Wife loved it so much we purchased a 01 model when lease was up and have horrible results with it. left us stranded 2 times when cat. converters went out between 2000 and 4000 miles. Transmission sensor went out at 38,000 miles at a cost of $700 to replace. Rotors have had to be turned 2 times in 2 years and needs it again. Driver side window regulator was just replaced yeaterday at the tune of $320.00 The 98 model was a gem and a pleasure to own but the 01 model is nothing short of junk! If I ever get this over priced piece if junk paid off, I'll never own another chrysler product.

Brakes. Power windows. Gas milage 17/21

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 54,000 miles Had to have the brakes done (pads and rotors) at 20,000 miles. Constant problem with front end alignment and tire cupping. Biggest problem so far is the power window regulators. Both the passenger and driver side regulators broke within 2 months of each other. The problem is a small plastic piece that holds a cable in place. When this breaks, you have to purchase the entire assembly. The cost is $200 for the part and $180 labor (each door)

Nice ride, comfortable interior, great sound system and 4x4(Select-Trac). Handles well and fun to drive.

Weakness:

Brakes warp too fast. Swapped OEM rotors with a set of Brembo rotors from the tire rack for $35 each. Haven't warped yet since 10K miles. Gas sucks(literally). Average only 12mpg city but highway is reasonable at 21mpg. Here's a list of parts that failedwore out and needed to replace: Rotors Power steering pump O2 sensors Catalytic convertor Rear differential bearing(overhaul) Drivers side front speed sensor Lower control arms Most of these are wear and tear except for the rear differential overhaul. Everything covered under warranty.

First off for anyone else writing new review, please state the year and engine of the vehicle. Mine is a 1998 Grand Cherokee with the I6 engine. Great engine and very easy to work on as far as changing oil, spark plugs, wires and all the good stuff. Plenty of room to work. Purchased this vehicle in October of 1997, Manufacture date was July '97 so I got it 3 months later. I love this Jeep. It's a joy and a pleasure to drive. 4x4 is amazing and has nice on road manners. Drives very nice. Currently have 72K miles on it and runs like new. Very comfortable inside and has plenty of power. I know there are a lot of negative reviews on the Grand Cherokee but so far I've been pretty lucky. I plan to keep this Jeep for a very long time because it's just a pleasure to drive. I do most of the maintenence work myself like oil change, spark plugswires, front ear differential fluids, O2 sensors, brakes and other small maintenece items.

Handles great, good off-road performance, nice power...when it runs.

Weakness:

Nightmarish reliability. Has left us stranded many times. Mediocre gas mileage from a small V8.

BEWARE! The Jeep Grand Cherokee can be a good car but most commonly it is a grand piec of junk. I bought my '97 Grand Cherokee from Nalley Jeep in Roswell, GA in 1999. I have had to: put 2 rear axles and a front axle on it, 3 drive shafts, an ECM main computer and wiring harness, a fuel computer, transfer case, power steering pump, water pump, transmission torque converter... Get the idea. Now after only 39000 miles, the front axle has gone out again and Jeep will not warranty it. If you buy it, it will break.

So far this has been a good vehicle. Noticed a small miss/vibration at idle and some hesitation at highway speeds, have yet to determine cause. Some noises in suspension at slow road speeds. Overall am happy with purchase. Have not done any off roading but anticipate some adventure in the near future once the hesitation problem is solved. Have tire rub on full turn possibly due to oversize tires (P235/75R15).

I love this jeep. 155,000 miles on the 4.0 I6. I spoke with the owner before me he had no major problems. I swapped Calipers right away to prevent the rotor warping that jeeps are infamous for. I've put over 22,000 miles on it since I got it in June and she looks and runs like brand new. Planning to swap out the Infinity Gold sound system because I've been turning it up a bit too much and it's beginning to distort. This is common with factory speakers though. Gas Mileage on the highway is 22mpg, 17 in the city. Mine has the Factory Tow Package and pulls my 3000lbs boat with no problem.
