Strength:

Tough four wheeler. Great accleration for the inline six. Nothing can beat it up to 40 mph. This thing will even idle at approx 10 lbs of oil pressure with no damage to the engine.

Weakness:

Drum brakes in back. Too badthey did not go to all discs. Even the girly Liberty has them. Back seat is cramped for my 6' 2" football player son and even my daughter won't sit back there if she does not have to.

This is the 5th Jeep product I've owned and the second Cherokee. Strong vehicle. Great 4 wheel drive. Will get you through the snow and mud without a whimper.Bought this one off lease. Automatic and Command Trac. Only thing it did not have I wanted was fog lights. Jeep has minor problems with all their vehicles, but I have not run into anything major (knock on wood). If people would remember how complex an automobile is, they would not be surprised if some problems popped up. (Yes, I am an ex auto mechanic, now I just do it for fun). And folks, all manufacturers put out a lemon now and then. This was the last great American off-roader. Too bad the company is now held by Daimler-Benz. Look what they did to the Liberty.

Strength:

Strong, reliable engine. Should go for 200,000 miles easy Strong tranny A REAL transfer case w/ no electronics to break Solid axles front and back Driveline is built like a tank Its a JEEP! Boxy look. You can put a "It's a Jeep thing" sticker on it. Wheel hard all day, clean it up, then take your wife out to dinner in comfort. Take 4 buddies along for the ride when you go wheelin' TONS of aftermarket parts and upgrades.(Generally, a good 4x4 is built, not bought.) Take the family wheelin' in comfort.

Weakness:

Don't make it anymore. You have to order the skid plates, tow hooks, auto tranny cooler, oil cooler, and full size spare if yor wanted these items.(you do, believe me!) Did I mention they quit making them. Can't select 1st or 2nd gear w/out aftermarket parts. Seats in my 1990 cherokee were more comfortable.

This is the second cherokee I've owned and I've loved them both. I have a small lift(1 1/2 inch) on this one, and it suprises me what it can do. Also removed the rear anti-swaybar and rigged disconnects for the front. Arizona is known for it's rocks and this thing will go tons of places w/ a little spotting. Stack a few rocks and you can go anywhere(you could drive over a house if you stack enough rocks). Can't wait till I have more money to dump into it. I'm planning on putting at least one locker in soon, probably the rear. Engine is STRONG. Pulls hard and will embarrass alot of other vehicles off the line, and if you can't beat them, at least you can drive over them.(hehe) Bought it from a girl that drove it on the road only and it had 48000 miles on it. Now has 56000 and no problems. I don't go wheeling tons, but when I do go, I go hard as a near stock vehicle can go. WHEEL IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!

Strength:

Tough, dependable, excellent off road capability, looks cool, not a monster, but not a station wagon either.

Weakness:

It is a bit small on the inside, but I have two kids and we go desert camping in it a lot with no problems regarding it's ability to carry what we need.

First of all...the Cherokee saved my life. I was a passenger on the freeway in one when we were slammed by a small pickup which pushed us into the next right lane where an 18 wheeler with 80 tons of asphalt got us between it's two trailers at 70mph. We were pushed up and over 5 times..roof to wheels then ended up spinning upside down for a few seconds before realizing what the hell had just happened. Not a square inch of the Jeep was left unscratched and every window had popped out and shattered. Neither my friend who was driving, nor I had any real serious injury. Awesome vehicle. I since have leased 3 of the same model. Since they stopped the Cherokee, I plan to keep this last model year forever. DO NOT buy a two wheel drive. It is pointless and weakens the character of what a Jeep is.

I own 2 jeep cherokees, 1994 2 dr. 5 sp., and the 1988 4 door auto. I use the 97 for street driving and some off road and the 88 for the harcore stuff. I gotta say that the 97 is amazing, I am approaching the 100k mark on it. When i bought it, it had 64k and ive had it for a little over a year. thats 30+k of miles spent driving to school and beating the balls off it delivering pizzas in a year. The only major problem with the 97 is that the headlights quit working so i ust turned the high beams down. now the 88 is relatively new to me, but the 3 in suspension lift and the 31' BFG all terrain tires make it trail ready. I cant say ive never got stuck, or like other people say, "goes anywhere" because anything can get stuck, and if youve never been stuck then your not really testing your jeeps limits! My advice is to buy a cherokee!

Strong motor. Handles great for an SUV.

Weakness:

Ride on road is a little rough, but it's a Jeep not a Cadillac! If you wanted a smooth ride you would have to sacrifice the most important off-roading part, the solid axle suspension.

Great 4x4. It's got a STRONG reliable motor that will last and last. It has incredible amounts of low end torque for off roading, but still has get up and go for the highway.

I AM THRILLED! Just purchased my 2000 Sport with 44K miles. It's Pewter/Silver, few flaws. Great condition lease vehicle, very clean. I'm only the second owner. Came from a 2002 Chevy Silverado LS Extended Cab, and I hated every square inch. The Jeep is a tight squeeze but it's a Jeep, fun, rough, dependable. **Purchased a bra from another review. The box corners catch rocks from what I understand.

There is no 4x4 brand more capable and heroic then the Jeep...My father had a Jeep Cherokee 99' and it was the greatest vehicle I've ever had the privilege of driving...I live in Connecticut and the winters spontaneously will dump several feet of snow and the question isn't whether you'll get stuck...it's whether you can get stuck...Jeep never has failed me and my Jeep has never gotten stuck off road...it's great power to weight ratio gives it some of the best 4x4 acceleration...and it never lets me down...I depend on it...don't buy other 4x4's that claim that they can do what Jeep does...because they can't...with Jeep's genius engineered design...can't be competed against...it is the original...and the American Legend...ONLY IN A JEEP.

Goes where ever I want it to. Needed some upgrades ; k&n open element filter, bosch platinum + 4 spark plugs, jet stage 2 chip, 160 degree thermostat, b&m trans cooler, dvd system, upgraded cassette cd factory stereo + better speakers, poweraide throttle body spacer, and royal purple synthetic fluids throughout. Just needs a better exaust and 31" tires and a 3" lift to be finished. Smokes any other suv I've gone against.Ride sux. Ditto for back seat room, but my 6 year old son dosen't complain, as long as he's watching sponge bob.
