This is a kick ass jeep. It's a monster off the road. I put big tires on it, grill guard, and winch. I can take this thing pretty much anywhere. It runs great and treats me good. This is a winner in my opinion.
Weakness:
It has 300,000 miles on it, but thats not too bad for a jeep. brakes could use some work. My jeep has a 4 inch lift on it and huge a$$ tires, also a winch. I can take this pretty much anywhere off-road and I love it. Similar Products Used: 1999 Ford explorer Eddie Bauer Ford's four wheel drive works good, but I still like my jeep. Fords luxury Explorer deffinetly beats the 1987 jeep interior. But who cares?! I'm just using my jeep for off-roading. |

Good performance and roomy. Fun and exciting when going off roading.
Weakness:
Too noisy and too many squeaks. The thing I dread the most is going over bumps and noticing that something came loose. (i.e. spare tire, screws) I like my Jeep, but at times I get so frustrated because one thing breaks then another after another. But then there are times, when it drives just perfect with no problems what so ever. I have invested a lot of $ in it already. I have been told it will need another $1000 or so of maintenance and then it should be OK. I am close to just getting rid of it, but I ahve gotten attached to it because it it my first truck. I love the look and feel when I drive it. But overall, it is a great utility vehicle! :) Similar Products Used: Montero Sport, Explorer. But is still belive the performance and offroading handling is much better in the Jeep Cherokee any day!! |

Excellent acceleration. I don't care what some reviewers say, the handling is predictable, responsive and much better than Explorers and other SUVs. For a "real" SUV, gas mileage is a strength. Great value if this is what you want. I have had zero problems with reliability. Dealers in Pittsburgh have been good.
Weakness:
The part time 4WD is not very useful. Maybe it is my inexperience, but I never feel confortable turning it on for fear of damaging the vehicle. Also, our Outback can cruise along at 70 mph in AWD without us thinking about whether we need to turn on 4WD. The Cherokee is limited to 55 mph and only on wet or loose terrain...thumbs down! I should have known what I was getting. For our purposes, our Outback is a much better vehicle. However, the Jeep has been much better than its bad press would indicate. Reliability has been the best of any car I have owned (Honda, Volkswagan, Dodge, Saturn). I travel a lot for work and I thought the 4WD would be an asset. I rarely use it. A MUST: If you get this one, look for a model with the full-time 4wd on it. Similar Products Used: Outback - the Subaru is more comfortable, quiet, refined and practical. It is also more expensive. Explorer - I hate the Explorers. Poor handling, economy and weaker off-road abilities. |

The best looking suv on the road. Awsome at 4 wheelin the 4lo gears on this thing are amazing. good handling. you add some off road assesories onto this thing it looks like a tank (probabily wheels as good as one too)
Weakness:
rides rough, I have the 2.8 litre so its not the best on the highway. had it for about a year now and haven't had to do a whole lot of matinece on it. put a three inch lift on it grille guard roof rack 4 kc lights in front and 2 kc's in the back and put great mud and snow tires on it. there really is no comparison if you want an suv. The new ones are less expensive and are pretty much better at everything. I totally recommend it for adventourous people, and pretty much everybody else. Similar Products Used: pathfinder, blazer don;t even compare in wheelin. don't look as good either |

Tough. This first-year XJ body Cherokee is approaching 200,000 miles and is still taking everything I dish out. It has been driven over some of the roughest territory in the Southwest on trips that would destroy an Explorer or one of the limp-wristed import "SUV"s.
Weakness:
Four cylinder engine is underpowered, but the I6 has plenty of juice. Sure, it is a little noisy and 'rides like a truck'. It is a truck, built for agility and toughness, not to be mom's minivan. I can keep up with the so called 'real jeeps' in nearly every offroad situation and still enjoy A/C and plenty of cargo room. Styling is classic. No unneccessary curves or bulges. Durable and dependable, plenty of spare parts and the guy at the gas station can work on it if need be. Similar Products Used: The Explorer, Blazer, Rodeo, Montero, 4Runner, etc. were all designed as competition for Jeep's original SUV and none come close. |

Great acceleration, nimble. Great price for what you get.
Weakness:
Thin frame doesn't seem very secure in case of accident. Ugly/poorly lit gauges. Had problems with the automatic gear shifter being off center causing starting trouble. Owned the 4.0 L V6 Sport. Great driver visibility, no blind spots. bought it with 135,000 miles on it took it to 150,000 and it's still running well with the new owner. Only trouble was with it starting on occassion, auto gear shifter needed adjustment. It has a very perky engine and a light frame giving it great acceleration. It's a shame to see it be discontinued most midsize SUVs are going towards the expensive range. This was priced just right. Similar Products Used: 1991 GMC Jimmy 4.3L V6 has a, heavier frame and more torquey engine but loses in braking, acceleration and interior noise. Beats the Jeep in confidence. |

Best offroad capabilities out there. Heat and Ac within minutes no matter the temps. Power, torque, 5000lb pulling capacity. Great value especially if leased, then purchased later. EASY TO change OIL AND PLUGS.. not like the newer cars where every square millimeter is used under the hood. CLEARANCE I cant stress enough how much ground clearance this thing has
Weakness:
dashboard is weak, mine squakes beacuase I had to take it off to tighten my antenna connection to my radio after the cd changer install guy fubared it. I leased with the intent to purchase my cherokee sport. I do wish I had gotten a 5speed with the upcountry package( phenomenal value for offroading) Similar Products Used: 00 Dakota off road, Blazers, other TOY suvs dont even compare. The 00 dakota off road is the only one that comes close w/ power or clearnace off road capability. |

There is really no strengths it is a 2.0 liter 4 banger And it doesn't have much power. I took it off roading and my wheel feel off I had to manualy put it back on to go back 4 wheeling
Weakness:
The thing sucks!!!!! Do not buy on they suck miserbly Similar Products Used: Geo Metro(actually that is a better car) |

Horsepower per dollar for a 4WD. In 4WD, if you get something cheaper, it's going to be 120 HP or so, which is less than a Nissan Altima. To go over the 190 HP I have, then you are spending probably an extra 5 grand anyway.
Weakness:
The dash construction is cheap, like all american cars. The instrument panel plexiglas cover buzzes. The tailpipe assembly is absurd. Forget any notions of using reverse in high terrain. My window mechanism busted during a snowstorm, so I looked real cool with that cardboard over the window opening *or* I got to freeze my nads off. I hope you don't want to turn the steering wheel while in 4WD. My 4WD will not disengage by lever, I have to drive around a little before it will slip. I had to replace the back right speaker. The console is cheap. Forget this car if you are over 6', because there is no leg room in front. Adults will not be able to get in back very easy. It is pretty noisy and bumpy ride. I get 14 MPG city, 24 highway. It was also recalled due to corrosion of airbag sensor, which could cause inadvertant deployment. My experience is that I would not have bought this car if I cared about fuel economy or interior noise. The fact remains that it is THE leader in horsepower per dollar. I wanted something 4WD for snow travel that wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg. Except for the annoying dash buzz and the window failure, it is ok. The jeep cherokee was rated the 3rd least reliable car on the market. Just think about how often you will have more than 2 people in the car. For me, it is never, so I don't care how cramped the back is. Similar Products Used: None |
