It's big and black! ... well, it's kinda greyish now...
Weakness:
Rear Drum brakes are horrible! Sometimes they don't work in the winter. I hate my car! So do my parents and my friends! Having my shift knob break off while driving was not cool! Have the clutch break while driving wasn't cool either! My friend who sold us the car had already flipped the car over a guardrail on the highway and rolled down some hill. But she made all repairs to it. My dad drove it and crashed into a Toyota Camry and totalled the Camry. The darn Camry dented our bumper and bent the front axle, which made 4wd useless. We fixed that... I drove it into a tree hoping I'd be able to get a new car, but broke the tree and dented the bumper. I don't take the car seriously. It's the toy I use when I play in the mud. It handles offroad but is useless on road. The car lasts forever! Similar Products Used: 2000 Toyota Camry. What a boring car, but it will kick the crap out of the jeep in everything except off road performance. |

This vehicle is designed for off road use. There is nothing better in its price range. Most sport utilities could not handle all of the challenges of steep declines and inclines without skidding out of control. Most do not have enough ground clearance to drive over rocks and holes without catching on the axle, muffler etc. The 4 wd low controls the speed and increases the power. The 6 inline engine is very powerful with a large tow cap. Vehicle is fun to drive and easy to manuever (short wheel base )around tight spots. Top of vehicle is great for carrying extra gear. This is the only vehicle that could carry my wide 39" canoe. They should never stop making this vehicle. The Chrysler people are the greatest and they sponsor some excellent Jamborees and Camp Jeep in Virginia. I was treated very well at C.J. and it made me a loyal owner.
Weakness:
There is not a lot of leg room but if it was changed the vehicle would be too long and limit its ability for off roading. Many SUV salesman do not do a good job of selling these vehicles because they do not understand the capabilities. These vehicles should be driven at reasonable speeds and avoid tailgating to prevent a rollover. It is important to stop and slow down in a straight line and not swerve. Off road speeds are usually done at 10mph. Similar Products Used: I test drove a Ford Explorer and some other SUV but all of them are made for city or highway driving. |

Good ride. Back seat seems to be better than our old Silverado back seat...more room in the Jeep. Looks great, sharp, and expensive. It maneuvers well and we get pretty good mileage on it.
Weakness:
Rotors have gone out at 40000 miles (we live in a non-salt and relatively flat region), and fortunately for JEEP they are not under warranty anymore and our Jeep is not one of the ones that was recalled for rotor problems. Though, our Jeep has a recall for a computer problem. I have researched Jeep and their recalls.....it is very wierd how problems, like the rotor problems we have had, are in mostly all their models and makes, but they only recall some of them and not others. It seems to me that they are installing inferior rotors in all their Jeeps. They should take responsibility and replace them. If I had to buy a Jeep again, I would not do it. Like I said before, they are good looking----but in the long run, you will end up paying more for the vehicle than it is worth. Similar Products Used: None |

Bought used in 1993 with 15K miles on it. Very sharp looking vehicle that is reliable and very powerful (4L inline six). It gets you where ever you want to go whether its long trips, towing boats, thru woods, -it laughs at snow. Comfortable seating and great visibility. Currently at 107K miles with no end in sight. 4x4 system ROCKS.
Weakness:
No cup holder in this model. Power window mechanism seems to be faulty. Doesnt get the greatest MPG. I love this vehicle! I've driven it daily for close to 8 years. It is reliable and powerful. Great Buy and would get another Cherokee in an instant! Similar Products Used: Never owner another SUV, but I test drove a Ford Bronco - Jeep blows it away. |

Brakes skip a bit after stop....small backseat......STEREO SUCKS I have only had the car for a couple days, and I have to say, it is the best thing ive ever driven. Already I have changed factory speakers to infinity's, and the radio to a clarion cd head unit. Also, i have 2 alumapro 10 inch subs powered by a power acoustik amp. Price!!! High visibility from inside. Plenty of room for 5 adults. Plenty of room for cargo, especially with the rear seat folded down (no need to remove seat cushions like some new SUVs.) Good gas mileage: 19-20 city and about 23-24 highway.
Weakness:
No too many, it eats gear shift knobs, about 1 a year. Have made a few minor repairs over the years: clutch at 40,000 (I attribute this to my daughter learning to drive at that time!), exhaust manifold at 100,000 miles (warped due to bolt that dropped out), gear shift knob that fractures once a year, and probably the most serious: the drivers door hinge cracked at 36,060 miles. It had a serious sag to it and was getting hard to close. Jeep fixed it for free after I protested, the warranty only went to 36,000 miles on it. I was looking for a used vehicle when I saw this advertised it the Friday paper. Brand new for the price I would have paid for something else with 70,000+ miles on it. It is the 2 door, 2 wheel drive base model with A/C and a stereo. I paid only $13,400(1994)!!! I really like this vehicle, it is my first SUV. There is plenty of room to fit 5 adults comfortably, and still carry some cargo in the back. Since it has few upgrades, I don't mind carrying lumber, bags of cement, old appliances or whatever in the back. I like the high visibility when driving, no worries when backing up! I have had few problems, and now have over 107,000 miles on it. Similar Products Used: Cars mostly, I like the SUVs. |

OUR JEEP CHEROKEE HAS PROVIDED TRUE OFF ROAD CAPABILITY AND PERFORMANCE, THE GAS MILEAGE IS GREAT FOR A 4WD SUV THE BEST GAS MILEAGE WE HAVE GOTTEN IS 17 MPG. THE INFINITI SOUND SYSTEM HAS A GREAT SOUND.
Weakness:
THE JEEP CHEROKEES BACK SEAT IS VERY SMALL IT FEELS MORE LIKE A BENCH RATHER THEN A SEAT, WHICH DOES NOT PROVIDE MUCH SUPPORT AT ALL. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT FOR ADULTS TO SQUEEZE THROUGH THE NARROW BACK DOORS, IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A CAR LIKE RIDE THEN THE CHEROKEE IS NOT FOR YOU, IN FACT THE JEEP HAS A VERY OBVIOUS TRUCK-LIKE RIDE. WE HAVE EXPIERENCED A SORT OF SQUEELING NOISE IN THE FRONT TIRES AT LOW SPEEDS AND OUR REAR WINDSHIELD WIPER HAS STOPPED WORKING. THE JEEP CHEROKEE IS A PERFECT CHOICE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS LOOKING FOR A TRUE AND VERY DEPENDABLE 4WD SUV, LETS JUST PUT IT THIS WAY YOU WILL GET ALOT MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK!!! THE JEEP CHEROKEE IS NOT FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE LOOKING FOR A SMOOTH CARLIKE SPORT UTILITY, THE JEEP CHEROKEE IS A NO NONSENCE READY FOR ANYTHING KIND OF VEHCICLE A TRUE 4WD! IF YOU ARE REALLY CONSIDERING THE JEEP YUOU SHOULD ACT NOW , THEY ARE DISCONTINUING THE JEEP CHEROKEE AND REPLACING IT WITH THE ALL NEW 2002 JEEP LIBERTY WHICH WILL ARRIVE MID-MARCH. THE JEEP CHEROKEE WILL STOP PRODUCTION DECEMBER 2001. Similar Products Used: WE HAVE OWNED A 2000 NISSAN XTERRA SE AND THE BEST GAS MILAGE WE GOT OUT OF THAT WAS 14 MPG. THE SUNROOF CONSTANTLY MADE NOISE THE WIND NOISE WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD THAT WAS THE MOST AWFUL PIECE OF JUNK WE HAVE OWNED, NO SUPRISE WE ONLY KEPT IT 4 MONTHS. THE JEEP IS MORE PRACTICAL AND VERY DEPENDABLE.WE HAVE OWNED OUR CHEROKEE FOR 6 MONTHS NOW AND WE ARE HAPPY! |

It's a Jeep! Looks awesome, especailly when clean. Strong inline 4.0/6 Easy access oil filter. Engine compartment user friendly. Solid body. Grey cloth inteior kicks. Like the overall cockpit, incl. the above temp./compass. My Grand rocks. A real solid performer, on/off road, even for a 2WD. Gets me where I need to go, with style. Mechanically very sound and reliable.
Weakness:
Back brakes squeal a bit. Slight vibration in the front during braking. Spare tire takes up some cargo space,(more practicle if it were lying flat under a lift rear deck carpet panel). Would be nice if the window/door controls were lighted at night. Back seat could be more comfy. Steers straight at a clock 2 position. That's about it! My Jeep Grd. Cher. Lar. commands respect, even among all other newer SUV's. With regular maintenance, it should roll me on through the next millenieum. I was lucky enough to find a beautiful 95' in perfect almost showroom condition. Lucky, because I believe that the 95's were by far the best of the 90's and beyond group. It's by far the best vehicle I have ever owned so far. I traded my 1987 Monte Carlo Super Sport in for it. Best thing I ever did. Friends said I was crazy to ditch that "Hot super freak" but beyond the looks, it was a mechanical lemon. When I park my JGCL, I always have to look back at least once. It looks like new inside and out and rides fantastic. I have no regets. My wife wishes she had my Jeep instead of her 98' Malibu. My Jeep rocks on! Similar Products Used: Ford Explorer, is a cheap wanna be contender. The top of the line Expl. dose'nt even come close to my 95' JGCL. |

electrical problems. anti-lick brake issues We're playing taps out here in new jersey. We bought this baby in 1990 after our mazda 626 was stolen. It has always had some faulty wiring issue. The power window were tempramental and the radio was funky. The "check anti-lock brake" light went on too often as well. But all in all, this was one rugged vehicle. Two weeks ago my husband got within a mile of our house and found himself brakeless...well they want 2500 for the repair so it is time to send her to the glue factory. I think we got our money's worth. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Very capable 4wd system, 4-litre inline 6 cylinder gives plenty of power, body design is very distinctive, both selec-trac and command-trac are excellent transmissions, reasonable center of gravity, good road clearance, strong & versatile roof rack, nice options. A strong, dependable vehicle (depending on proper lubrication and maintenence history). Generally more reliable than the more expensive (and in some ways overrated) Grand Cherokee. Excellent suspension.
Weakness:
Clear coat failure on original paint not uncommon. Difficult to repaint, due to body contours. Cooling system reservoir could be of stronger construction. fuel injectors may crack and need replacement over 100k miles, exhaust manifold may need replacement at 80-100k miles due to cracks. generally, at or better than average maintenance costs, when compared to other SUVs of the same model year. 1990 Cherokees equipped with ABS have had many recalls on the ABS systems, to the extent of a partial lifetime warrantee by Chrysler on some portions of the systems. I had problems with a '90's ABS, but Jeep/Chrysler was extremely accomodating and thorough in correcting problems, and the system has been reliable ever since, with no repairs charged to me. I bought my first Cherokee in 1997 after selling my Mercury Sable. What a difference. I loved sitting higher, and once I got used to the Cherokee's handling, I could do some amazing things with it. Similar Products Used: really, other than the fact that they are lumped into the SUV category... none. |
