Strength:

DEPENDABILITY. I bought mine with 103,000 miles on it and all that i have done is replace the radiator, starter, change the oil, and drive the HECK out of it. And it still runs like the day i got it now with 161,000 mi on it. The Cherokee rides like a REAL truck. Thats what something that is built to last feels like. Its a Jeep, if you want a car like ride buy a CAR!!!

Weakness:

As of June 22, 2001 they will no longer be built.

This is the BEST suv ever built! It is the most dependable vehicle that i have ever owned. It is also the most comfortable vehicle out there. I have driven exploders, blazers, montero sports, and xterras. But the Cherokee out did them all!

Similar Products Used:

Exploder/blazer/xterra--not enough room, too boxy, not enough power, and UGLY

Strength:

Reliable. Always starts on the coldest of days. Mechanically it is maintenance free (no word of a lie), it has cost me next to nothing other than oil changes, tires, and one set of brakes. I had to replace the brake pads once and only after 68,000 miles. It has lots of power (especially city driving). For a V6 I am happy with the gas mileage.

Weakness:

Rough. But I knew that was what I was getting. 5 speed transmission is no good for towing!! The hatch is pretty heavy and hard to shut. Console broke early but was covered by warranty. My husband is 6'3 and used to driving a truck and hates the limited space getting in and out. Once he is in he is fairly ok with it. A BIG complaint is the lack of CUP HOLDERS!! Back seat not roomy enough and a pain to get in and out of without getting dirty. I would not recommend this vehicle if you are going to be driving with adult passengers often in the rear seat.

I would definitely buy another Cherokee sport. My husband wants something roomier, so we have to negotiate. In general, I rate it high because you get all you pay for. It is reasonably priced to begin with and costs next to nothing to operate. It has its weaknesses, but you are aware of all of these at time of test drive.

My mother owned a 1990 Cherokee Sport, my brother owns a 1999 Cherokee Sport. We all love them. The 1999 seems to have improved from my 96 and mom's 90. The ride seems smoother. The trunk hatch is easier to open and close. And none of us have had maintenance problems. We all highly recommend these vehicles (as long as space not an issue)

Love that 4.0 / pickup is great, ride is smoothe. Plenty of room for the dogs. Visibility is real good!

Weakness:

I have to agree with most everyone....NO HEAD RESTS IN THE BACK SEATS.Don't like where the ash tray sits either. I have a slight problem ,feels like something rubbing, when in part time drive and take tight turns like trying to get into a parking spot. someone told me that was normal? Don't like where the rear speakers are mounted. actually ,i don't like that the cargo light is within the same panel.

When i went out looking for a 4WD vehicle, I wasn't even thinking of a Jeep. I was looking for a Dodge Ram. But when i saw this bright red jeep it caught my interest. So i took it for a spin. I was sold. I got it used in 2000. It only had 30,000 miles on it. I'd been looking for a year for a used truck with average miles at a good price. I really do think i've found it.

I've driven different vehicles. 2WD trucks, saturn's(which i really liked for a car.), and i've test driven the explorer- didn't like it. Blazer- didn't like it.The Jeep gives me the room i was looking for,the pick up i like, and I feel pretty safe.

Strength:

Excellent torque, quick, better than I thought at highway speed. This is a true off-road machine and it out performs everything in its class. Ive not driven a better SUV off-road...save for maybe the Wrangler. This little truck is a great value for off-road and winter driving enthusiasts!

Weakness:

ROTORS! ROTORS! ROTORS! Have had to replace or turn them 5 times at 35k. Replaced once under warranty at 7k, turned once as a courtesy 3k later, now I pay through the nose every 5k. Dealer denies a "problem". They claim it is my driving. BS!!! I called Midas last week and said "I've got a 98 Cheroke.." The dude cut me off and finished my sentence; "with recurring rotor problems..." So, I find it hard to believe that Jeep is unaware of any "problems". Ok, enough ranting...

Leather is crappy; began to crack after first year (no tears, though). Head room is terrible for 6ft+. Cannot fold down rear seat without either removing bottom seat, or putting front seats uncomfortably far forward.

Aside form the (god awful) brake problems, mechanically, this car has been very reilable. Lots of bang for the buck. Outstanding off-road handling and great power. Interior is rather chintzy, like most American-made, but not terrible. I would higly recommend this to shorter men (or average-height women) who want an off-road beast that can be driven to the grocery store.

Similar Products Used:

Explorer, Outback, Blazer...These are all CARS that are OK off-road. Nice to take the kids to school or drive on groomed trails. The Cherokee, however, is designed for serious off-road abuse. Snow, mud, rocks, water crossing, whatever, the Cherokee can handle it. It is a TRUCK that happens to handle the highway ok. It is unique among the myriad of wanna-bees.

Strength:

Good engine & 4WD system. Iv'e taken it through the Mojave desert at 60 mph. through the trails hit some BIG dips & bumps with no damage. Iv'e also taken it to Wolf Creek, CO. at over 13,000 ft in winter conditions. The Cherokee has good cargo room, because it is enclosed you can really " stuff " it. My family of 4 enjoys it and gets great use out of it.

Weakness:

No real faults other than those that fall under " Previous Owner " maintenance. Still rus great ( 17 MPG ) with 99,000+ miles.

Overall I feel it's a great vehicle. Even though there are alot of " newer " SUV's out there I feel the " Cherokee " is a value priced " keep it simple " vehicle. The " Cherokee " has been around for 17 years, to me that says they must have done something right. I'm sad to see the model go.

Similar Products Used:

I had a 1996 F-150 with the 351 V-8, it used too... much gas, but the ride and handling are about the same. The jeep is a little stiffer, but I feel it can take the abuse better & cheaper.

Strength:

-Great 4 wheel drive
-straight 6 cylinder engine has lots of torque
-very dependable

Weakness:

-not much, only problem was the transmission got locked into park once and had to get towed
-keep an eye on the rear transfer case, they tend to leak fluid on higher mileage jeeps

Although I bought this vehicle with 89000 miles on it i never had any significant problems with it. even in 88 the limited came with power everything (seats, mirrors, windows, locks, rear wiper, and mirrored windows). This car loves the snow, I drove it through several minnesota winters without ever getting stuck. I also really like the four wheel drive system, you can engage it up to 45-50 mph whereas on the 1st generation explorer you have to stop completely according to the manual. Jeep makes a great suv if you perform basic maintinence on it regularly.

Similar Products Used:

Ford explorer- has more cargo room, but jeep is better in all other aspects (off road capability, four wheel drive, engine power, durability)

Look. Ride. Turning radius. Acceleration. Power. and the list goes on.....

Weakness:

the back seat is honestly the worst seat i have ever ridden in, too small, no headrests, and the seat belt buckles are positioned wrong so that the face the front, not toward you where they should.

this is a very fun vehicle no matter what the age and definately a deal. many options for the price. lots of great features and a smooth, quick 4 liter I6.

Similar Products Used:

trading in a suburban for the jeep has had its ups and downs. mainly space. the jeep accelerates and handles much better, but that isnt to say that the suburban didnt handle well. havent had a chance to have it in the snow at all yet. i miss the pushbutton 4WD of the suburban. also no space under the middle seat for subwoofers for sound system because i dont want to deplete trunk space.

Great 4by4, would never consider buying any other brand of suv

Strength:

The 4.0 motor is decent, the ride is amazing. There is no body roll on turns. The interior is ok, rear headrests would be nice but would obstruct view. If you know Jeep, than you know its strengths. This vehicle is DESIGNED for what most people would consider extreem off roading. If you don't know what the rubicon trail is, you don't know Jeep.

Weakness:

The brand new seats are too firm. The windsheild is sorta small, but I'm 6'2''... The stock speaker locations are downright stupid.

The Jeep cherokee is a '10'. Comfort, capability, handling, power. This is not an 'SUV', this is a JEEP. SUV= rice burner or soccer mom transport. An SUV is a caravan with a transfer case.

Similar Products Used:

GMC Jimmy 1989 4.3, Chevy Blazer 1985 2.8. Similar vehicles, the Jeep has more power, more dependable. The Jimmy/Blazer interior is better, and the rear seat fold down system is WAY more intelligent in the Jimmy. Jimmy's suck unless you like to buy new parts every day.
