Strength:

Powerful, comfortable, good pick-up(6), and overall performance. It's a fun vehicle, good for the dog and throwing a day's worth of stuff in for a day trip. I feel relatively safe because it's sturdy.

Weakness:

Gas mileage not great, not enough storage, glove box too small, tires squeal on certain surfaces, back hatch could be designed better.

I had a Jeep Reneagade CJ-7 in 1985 and loved it. I would pull/push people up a snowy hill in Boston without blinking. Jeep's back then had carborator problems and I got rid of it while I could still could.

This Cherokee has been great. I've had it for almost a year (bought used) and I definitely recomment it. But, get them while you can!

Similar Products Used:

Leased 2 Honda CRVs and they can't even come close to a Jeep! Honda #1 had great gas mileage, but #2 sucked. The ride did not feel as secure.

Strength:

Solid construction. I love the color I got, sort of an electric blue. Engine, tranny, drivetrain feels very solid. Tough suspension. Competent off-road capability straight out of the box. Price is right. More horsepower and torque than it needs. Strong engine.

Weakness:

Thirsty. Not too bad if you just cruise. So much pep to this 4.0 that I'm tempted to keep the pedal to the medal.

I love the feel of it. It is perhaps the most rugged vehicle I've ever owned. I had a '94 Wrangler and experienced drivetrain problems. I think the last series of redesigns corrected many of the flaws in the jeep lineup. I needed something I could take my family of five in if necessary. (My wife drives a larger minivan.) I used to drive nothing but toyota's. This jeep is built much more solid than my tacoma. I can tell just by the feel of its appointments, the hum of it's engine, and the way the suspension feels that the this car will outlast that Tacoma. Toyota drivetrain's are solid but they forgot about the interior coachwork. Chrysler has apparently performed a 180 degree change. Top quality inside and out.
This jeep is not for someone wanting a luxury suv. While it can be had with finer appointments, why don't you go buy a lexus or mercedes suv. Those would certainly break off-road. The Cherokee drivetrain is the same as that in the Wrangler. It is designed for off-road use. At the same time, it handles very smoothly on the highway.

Toyota Tacoma. Ford Explorer. Full-size Ford Trucks. Mercury Villager. The Cherokee is a better-made vehicle. I guess Chrysler finally figured it out.

I like the feel of it. It looks sharp and is rugged.

Weakness:

it's fun to drive, looks sharp and is rugged. Even though they are going to discontinue them (maybe) there are a lot of them on the road which is good for getting parts and helping the resale value because they're popular. I love my jeep......

isuzu rodeo. at first glance the rodeo looks like it gives more bang for the buck but i would be afraid to take it to the trails, it might break. The jeep is rugged and should last a very long time. I know a few people that have over 200k on them and have had only minor problems.

Strength:

Solid and reliable. One of the quickest SUV's around. Great Value for money

Weakness:

I have seen postings that a strength is it's fuel consumption ! You pay over $6 a gallon (costs me $75 to fill the tank !) Living in London drops my average MPG to around 13

Bought the Cherokee when is was 1yr old, the previous owner, with finanace, paid £28,000.00 !! (would have been cheaper to import one or two !) Unusual to get a 3year warranty on vehicles in the UK. Had and have no real concerns. Dealer servicing quite good value also. Reliability is the key. My wife was concerned at its size, as she was only used to driving a 2door compact, but loved it as soon as she drove it ! Would consider the Grand Cherokee V8 next

Sporty looking trucks(got red of course)--Impressed with no rust anywhere after 90,000 miles(for the midwest that's unheard of)--can almost smoke the tires from a dead stop without trying--wife hardly lets me drive it anymore because she fell in love with the speed and ease of handing--it really sucks they are going to stop making these--their great SUV's--have had not one problem with mine

Weakness:

Of course everyone knows it's noisy at high speeds and no cup holders--back seat is tight but I have young kids so I don't care and neither do they--hard starting(guess the shift lever has to be aligned or something to that affect-stereo system sucks but I just sing louder

Would buy another and will buy another one in a few years(has to be red though)--Even though the ride is rough, anyone who loves the outdoors, the roughness of a truck, speed and classy looks, get a Jeep Cherokee Sport.
I like the basics--no power windows, no power seats, no power locks--no power anything------Back to the old days of the original Jeep---->
NOTHING BETTER!

Strength:

durable
strong engine...always amazed at the pickup it has for being 12yr old
looks great..styling never goes out of style
never quits, 200,000 mi to date

Weakness:

rattles..everything seems loose
cooling system sucks the big one...many probs with overheating!

This Jeep was given to me 3years ago by my parents (they bought it in 1992). Its lifted 2" with rancho suspension and has Jeeps OEM Sport rims on it. It has a salvaged title (supposedly it was beat by a baseball bat when it was less than 2 years old, and damaged every body panel) and the paint is fading like none other.
I have had my fair share of problems, mostly due to the cooling system. I cant count how many times we have changed the thermostat, changed hoses, overflow tank, radiator, and have flushed the thing probably 6 time. Now i have no thermostat in it, and on hot days the overflow tank still bubbles, doesnt overheat though. To list the other things wrong: seatbelt broke, ac doesnt work, all vents messed up, blinkers broke long time ago, 4wd is broke (says dealer) i never use it so i wouldnt know, power locks dont work, windows stick when all the way down. Guess thats it.

One thing i hate is going over bumps, given i do have a stiffer suspension then stock, but still, i have to go like 1mph over speed bumps, and i have actaully snaped off my rear shocks going over a speed bump. Everything rattles and chips when im stopped, and its really a rough ride when driving. not at all a luxury vehicle

Overall i am amazed that this jeep is still going with 200k. it remains to run strong and has great acceleration, i cant beat a lot of cars off the line. I think this car has been a great first car, its a big beater that my parents didnt really care what happened to. I have enjoyed driving it, but im sick of paying the gas. i dont know about other jeeps but i get appx 13mpg, not fun.

strong, durable, overall amazingly reliable and cheap to maintain, nice looking (even though my paints worn thin, i still get compliments on it)
if youre looking for a cheap suv to get things around or go to the mountains this is it.

Lackluster interior

Fell in Love with the Cherokee after test-driving a 97 sport. The dealer let me keep it for a week while it reviewed my credit. Credit rating to low so they asked for a higher down payment. I said forget it and began looking for an older model. Found a white 91 Cherokee Laredo, test drove it, bought it cash. It had 173,000 miles on it when I bought it with minor interior damage, i.e., the hatch interior panel was missing. Other than that the exterior was in perfect condition.

Well, the thing has 231,045 miles on it today and I have had few problems. Changed the fuel pump and changed the front brake pads. Other than that it's been only oil changes.

I had a front end collision with an Altima. Guess who's still driving?Right, the Jeep. The Altima was totaled and undrivable. I drove it home and decided not to fix the damage. You can only tell if you look at it fron the passenger side anyway.

It is one tough vehicle. I recommend it to anyone interested in buying a used SUV.

Everything

Everything has gone wrong with this car. In less than a year we have had the rotors replaced twice, two new tires, the front shocks replaced, the front drivers side door was falling off, and everything on it rattles! We are in arbitration now, hoping for a buy back. Never again would I buy a Chrysler product. The dealership has been okay. Service has done everything it can, quite frankly they don't know what is wrong with the car. Corporate Chrysler could care less. They spend all their money sending you surveys and send you back a letter saying "sorry you aren't happy". My advice, stay away from Chrysler, they are going downhill fast.

Strength:

Bad weather is what this thing was built for. It won't let you down when driving through a near zero visibility monsoon. While water is sloshing over your vehicle and pelting the winshield and other drivers have pulled over to wait out the wrath of the storm you can keep on driving even at high speed.
Inline 6.0, 190 horses cannot be beat for price. Even outperforms vehicles costing tens of thousands of dollars more. If you want to start at $31,000 base for a Toyota LandCruiser, go ahead -- I did not have that kind of money to waste as I had a cap of 20 grand.
Great towing vehicle for any standard to medium heavy trailer (largest U-Haul, medium heavy trailer home) -- can accelerate on climbs while hauling.
Stable at high speed, unlike the Wrangler. Takes getting used to (you don't take your foot off the acclerator completely during freeway travel and there is a suttle point of cruising usually at 2100 rpm that is not distinctly detectable by ear. More fun and confident driving than a sedan.
Rugged non-dumbed down vehicle. Like the common sense old-fashioned gauges and pull-out switch for the headlights. An oil-pressure gauge and battery volatage meter as well as the standard warning lights, what a concept!!
More parts seem to be available for Jeeps than any other--from a multitude of oem parts to after-market add-ons. Everyone carries them and they are much cheaper to buy than import parts.

Have had several low speed hits from the front and back with barely a noticible scratch to the bumpers (adds character). In one case the other car's grill was damaged. Not a dent in my bumper and its hard to see the scratch. In other cases, it was slammed into at low speed by other vehicles backing out of the drive and it still looks new with no dings or dents even on the bumpers.

Weakness:

Rough Ride in this version. Horse and Buggy feeling at times on bad roads. Not a problem to buy and install new shocks from 39.95 each using a jackstand.
FUEL MILEAGE - pretty crappy BUT can be greatly increased by using the recommended motor oil that meets or exceeds the new GF-3 requirements and provides better mileage like Havoline, unscrewing the factory airbox and installing an air tube with high efficiency filter, and most importantly learning how to drive the inline 6 in a fuel efficient manner (namely keeping mostly constant speeds with the minimum cruising rpm and needlessly "over-reving" the engine for fun all the time).
Jeeps are a ticket-magnet, esp. RED ones and a lot of people will pre-judge you for having one--when dealing with parking officials, for instance you will get the eye of instant suspicion that you would not get if you were driving a Honda Accord.

Headlights, Tailights - have had to replace both headlights and one tailight in the 5 years I've owned.
Wet carpet problem - easily fixed - water mysteriously in cabin after sitting in rain - will find that rain water dribbles through a not-completely-sealed grommet in the firewall (use bathroom caulk).
Driver's side door slider bar fell off and is missing. This is the part that keeps the door open after opening to a certain point.
Noise could be considered a drawback although I have found it to be fun and safer because you are in contact with what is happening rather than the stale quiet of an accord. You may learn to be a better, calmer driver without much thinking because you are subconciously aware of the road and engine. Once you get used to it, it feels like you are flying a small aircraft (esp. true when zooming steadily over curvy hills).

Formerly a car owner. If you want to step up to fun, easy maintenance and the assurance of an all-weather, all-terrain driving vehicle that gets you where you need to go through any conditions and you would like a cross between a rugged yet smooth tank driving experience and sports car acceleration then this is the vehicle for you. The love of Jeeps cuts across many cultural and economic lines.

If you have not driven a truck before it will take some getting used to. Understanding the concept of what you are driving, an inline 6 with rear wheel drive (on 2wd sport),goes a long way in learning to drive.

This thing was built to bolt over curvy hilly roads even at night and in the rain. I have not been able to hydroplane it even in the worst weather at any speed (up to around 80mph+), although I lost steering control in a Honda Accord going at 40 mph in the same weather on the same day.

Do not get too many electrical features/options. I would be wary due to so many reports of problems with them. I have power windows, power doors and AC and no cruise. Works like a charm so far. I am also glad I have a 2wd due to the freeway noise of the 4wd and reported problems/breakups of the system during interchange. Do not spend too much money on a Cherokee, otherwise you might as well buy yourself a "luxury SUV." Do not buy a used one -- I can see how damage could be done during the break-in period due to the size and power of the engine. I drove mine easy for the first thousand or so. Change the oil and filter every 3000 and don't do a lot of really high powered breaking. 68,000 miles no brake problems whatsoever. Although I brake hard, I am conscious of the weight of the vehicle, so I don't "scrunch" the brakes unless I have to.

Its an obvious value deal - 5 stars. Overall, I give it 4 because they could have made significant advances in fuel economy, and ride with a few simple, inexpensive, easily installable parts.
