Disgruntled Jeep Owner

Strength:

I liked the way it looked and have heard stories to the + and - about Jeep

Weakness:

Horrible engine... the tranny dropped after only four years.

Horrible engine problems within 3-4 years of life. Tranny dropped, A/C compresser blew, etc. Very happy now with Toyota, would not recommend Jeep even though they have revamped engines, I think twice since '93.

Strength:

Very roomy inside, very reliable. "Safe" feel to it when driving.

Weakness:

Not the smoothest ride.

This truck never let me down. It certainly wasn't the fanciest of vehicles but other than doing the brakes once and changing the oil this truck needed no maintainance. It could have had a little more pick up in the speed dept. This vehicle never caused me any grief and never left me stranded, I really miss it and would definately recommend buying one of these

Strength:

Classic, down to business Cherokee styling. 4.0L mtr has great performance. Rugged and dependable. Roomy.

Weakness:

Could handle better, but it's not sports car. A little too excessive on the wind noise at high speeds.

I really like the Jeep and am looking into getting another. With 81,000 miles there has been no mechanical problems what so ever. Engine performs well (21/17mpg) and is still very peppy. I can drive it ANYWHERE and believe me I've put it to the test big time. The interior has held up well with no real signs of wear and I have 2 kids. Very comfortable on long trips and plenty of room for all the luggage on a 2 week trip. The exterior still looks very nice when cleaned up with no problems in the finish. Two of our relatives and one neighbor have bought one after hearing our experiences with it and they are very happy too. (So far).
I am a Classic car owner and have been a mechanic for over 25yrs. I'm pretty particular about what I drive, and the Jeep looks and performs up to my expectations.

Strength:

Quick speed up from the 4.0 i6
Amazing off-road... i've been through the muddiest conditions imaginable and it still crawled out.
Power everything is a plus for an '88
all around tough truck

Weakness:

rotors are bad
rear windows don't roll back up
10-15 mpg in town

I bought this jeep from a friend when I turned 16, it had 149k miles and now has 169k and it's still running like new. Brakes have been replaced once but rotors need replaced now, EGR valve went out and has been disconnected (just sucks power anyway =P) and the E-brake line rusted out and wouldn't release so it's been disconnected as well. I'm planning on putting a 3-4" lift and some bigger mud tires on it. I would recommend the cherokee over any other SUV, especially for offroading.

Strength:

Very strong, Very Reliable, never any problems or let downs out of this jeep. Very capable off road. Will go anywhere a stock wrangler will go. Has plenty of power to pull boats or any z71 out of the mud.

Weakness:

The only weakness is trying to sit in the back seat if you are a full size 6'5 adult:).

I have enjoyed owning this jeep. I plan on never getting rid of it because it has been very reliable to me and DC has decided to stop producing the XJ. I would recommend the jeep to anyone who wanted a very reliable, safe, and fun jeep to own.

Have driven many 4x4 on the market and very few are as nice and reliable as the XJ.

Strength:

Great off road. Nimble handling. Durable.

Weakness:

Wind noise on highway, electrical glitches.

With 246,000 miles on the odo I think most of the bugs are worked out of this one. I bought it because it had the 4.0, the 5 speed manual, "Command Track" (part time) 4 wheel drive, and the clincher .... vent windows! Very happy with 3 inch Superlift and 31" tires on the stock alloy wheels, and 3.73 gears front and rear.

Strength:

Rugged. Dependable. An American Institution

Weakness:

It's being discontinued

I have owned two Cherokees and feel that you cannot find a better off-road vehicle for the value and dependability. I have had very few problems with my Jeep, which is not uncommon for this product. I will not hesitate to buy another Cherokee. Unfortunately, after this year it will have to be a used Jeep since they will no longer sell the Cherokees. The Liberty is not a Cherokee.

Strength:

The 4x4 is owesome, great looking, That 4.0 engine can outrun almost any suv anyday, and cargo space is just perfect for my weekly shopping rutine

Weakness:

It's a bit noisy, and the gpm is not that great, but for all that power I guess is good to go. Other than that,I don't think there is anything better out there for the price i'd paid for mine.

I think this vehicle is great, with 147,000 miles on it stills looks new and the engine just don't give up. Since I have it(a year now) I have only done the basic tune-up and minor fixtures on it. It's a shame that they are going to stop doing this amazing jeeps, but i'm glad a had the chance to drove one and hopefully with a good maintance probably my son will be able to drive it. I really don't think there is a better suv in the market.
I got this vehicle because is perfect for all weather conditions but if your looking for something with better gpm and more space get a car but for me this jeep is perfect for all my needs.

Strength:

Rugged, dependable, good looking, great power, easy to maintain,
decent gas mileage for a 4x4. Solid front axles last a whole
lot longer than independant front susp. Great in snow. Good
cargo capacity. Great to tow with. I have put 130,000 miles
on this Jeep and it still runs like a top and looks great.
I like it so much I just bought another one....

Weakness:

Factory catalytic converter started rattling at 110,000 miles.
(can't really complain about that though...)

This is a wonderfully engineered little 4x4. How else
would it have survived from 1984-2001 virtually unchanged??
To bad DaimlerChrysler has decided to pull the plug and replace
it with the Liberty. Maybe sanity will prevail and they
will keep the Cherokee plants open in Toledo.

Similar Products Used:

I have driven Explorers, mountaineers & S-10's. Not
one of them compares to a Cherokee.
