Strength:

*Inline-6 Engine. You could shoot a bullet through the thing and it would still have enough to get you to the next gas station, at least.
*Reliability
*Can go just about anywhere
*Versatility

Weakness:

*Road Noise
*Spec Thermostat locks up after a few months. Need to use a lower degree thermostat
*Leaks Oil
*Fuel Efficiency, but that's a given with these
*Paint is peeling badly

I got my Cherokee over 5 years ago and it's been a great ride. It was the first "real" automobile I bought and I've been impressed by it in a lot of ways.

When I first got the thing, it looked like the prevoius owner had not taken very good care of it, yet the thing still performed moderately well. Once I went in and cleaned everything up (engine, coolant, filters, etc.), it ran much better. The inline 6 engine is damn near bulletproof. I'm always amazed at how that thing can perform in even bad conditions. Were I to get another Jeep, I'd definitely use this engine as a standard to go by here.

Handling wise, it's great. Can go anywhere and handles any condition that I've met. Whether it's up to the mountain for snowboarding or down to the river, my Jeep has never had a problem. Throw that puppy into 4WD and it'll handle just about everything out there. Not the smoothest freeway ride out there but you're not going to get a "car-like ride" out of a truck! It does well, though, and I never had a problem passing anyone if I needed to.

Overall, this has been a great ride. It's a good value for what you get. It's about the right size, too, if you're not up for getting a giganto-SUV. It will be interesting to see how Jeep's new Liberty measures up with the Cherokee. I can understand a lot of people's reluctance towards the new Liberty, especially with it's "cute" look, but time will tell. If anything, Cherokee's will still be around for quite some time.

Strength:

* Power
* Great room for dogs when the back seat is down

Weakness:

* When the back seat is up, it is uncomfortable for any long trips and there isn't enough room for big people.
* My Jeep just turned 39,000 miles and I am having transmission problems. I have not used the vehicle for any off-road purposes, and the majority of my mileage is highway. You may want to consider an extended warranty (I know I wish I had!)

I have enjoyed this vehicle very much with the exception of a few things. Until my tranmission problem I would have recommended this vehicle anyone. Now, I am a little hesitant.

Strength:

Best vehicle I ever purchased. Great for beach or ski trips (never been stuck / but aided drivers in other brands of SUVs. It has 200,500 miles with just normal wear and tear and regular maintenance. Still looks good and drives good. Gas mileage similar to other vehicles of this class. Only complaint is that my my daughter claims it and wants to drive it all of the time.

Weakness:

Smallish space in back seat. With high mileage there is somewhat more noise from road and motor.

I would highly recommend this car to anyone that wants a high quality product, it does what it was built to do. I understand that that Cherokee will be discontinued in 2001 and replaced with the Legacy. I would buy another one if they were still available. I'll watch for the new model and evaluate then.

Strength:

I love the way it handles off road. I never have any problems with it. When I go diggin i never have any worries. I now have 31 inch mickey thompson 1250 tires on there. they do very good in the mud.

Weakness:

The 2 wheel drive in it slides around more than my other 4wd cars i've had.

I would definately recomend this car to anyone looking to buy an suv. I've never had any problems with mine. The gas mileage is ok mine got 20 mpg before i put my 31' tires on it, it now gets about 14 mpg which i think is ok because of the way the tires look and handle in the mud. if u dont like cars that are noisy dont buy this car cause there is alot of road noise. but that makes me like it even more cause i know the car is working.

Strength:

strong 4.0 engine
Great acceleration
wonderful off-road ride
tight handling and cornering
looks good
easy to repair

Weakness:

no cup holders!!!
about 12-14 miles in the city
16-18 on the highway
a bit shaky over 100 mph
needs a better speedometer

I love my 95 XJ. After buying it one year ago, it's been changed drastically. My first upgrade was a K&N cone filter. I noticed a nice horsepower gain, and a great noise from the engine. Since I decided I wanted alot of power, I put on a high flow cat, and a two chamber flowmaster muffler. The truck sounds great, and has much better performance. I figure it runs around 210 hp and 230-240 lb. ft. of torque. Recently I got BF goodrich 235/7515's and am very impressed with the off-road capability. It can handle anything, and I've never gotten stuck. Mud, Rocks, Snow, it can handle anything. Future plans include a 3 inch lift, bigger tires, headers, and a performance chip. Wouldn't trade this thing for anything else.

Strength:

Price, Size, colors offered, body design not rounded like the others original, Drives nice on the highway.

Weakness:

Wind noise while on highway, shifting delay on auto transmission, little leg room for older children and adults.

I shopped around for many types of vehicles, from cars, 4 door pick-ups to suv's. The cherokee sport was the best selection for the money and the look. I have been told and read the horror stories, but the overall is that it is an outstanding vehicle. I would recommend Cherokees to anyone. It just too bad that Daimler Chrysler may discontinue production of the Cherokee. I guess its to much competition for their Mercedes SUV.

Strength:

Strenghts? What strengths?

Weakness:

Anything and everything you can mention.

A small list (note not all repairs and problems listed, will be here all night)

My tires were the wrong size when sold to me

Air conditioner did not work well enough to keep a fly cool.

Brake & rotor problems (always done be dealer, but never fixed problems)

Voltage regulation problems (by god don't turn on the AC!)

Paint coming off hood after 3 years, and other areas of truck.

Hinges on doors breaking and cracking at the welds.

Driver side seat broken after 1st year

Vent for AC-heater fall off just by touching them by year 5.

Dash cracked in several places.

Front windshield leaked, as well as poor seals on other windows.

HEATING PROBLEMS!! I could not sit in line at MC'D's to get my kids a happy meal without it heating up starting in year 3!

Oil Leaks from Transmission

Windshield wipers would go nuts or not work at all

4 wheel drive would not properly engage (1st month we had it and problems persisted)

Wierd noises from front end and just endless problems with it...

THE LAST STRAW! Driving to Phoenix Arizona in July, hotter than hek with 2 young children in the car. My engine light comes on. Before I left on the trip, vehicle went in for a full service and looked over and all the goodies. I am panicking, call the dealership on my cell, they tell me to take it to the closest dealership. So I do! I am in the middle of nowhere, and waited 6 HOURS for them to charge me $305 to change a sensor that affects the smog equipment on my vehicle. The part cost me $90 and the labor kicked me in the teeth!! After I leave the dealership and an hour on the road, BOOM! Well you guessed it, that light shines right at me again!! Take it to another dealership in Peoria, AZ. They tell me that another sensor is out and I fork out another $228.

Many other things to add...but my fingers are tired! :0)

Now mind you, I had all maintance work done to the truck at the dealerships, I always babied the thing. My god if I did not it would of fallen apart faster. I repeatedly called the area Dogde/Chrysler/Jeep rep, and they never wanted to help me out or meet me half way, the dealership was rude, uncooperative and took me for everything they could.
I will tell anyone and everyone who is even thinking of a Dogde/Chrysler/Jeep vehicle to please stop and leave the notion in the trash. I have been stranded and had no faith in my vehicle even going on small trips around the valley here. The car stripped me of any reassurance in the company and stripped my pocket book of about $4000 in repairs. So to you Dogde/Chrysler/Jeep I LOATH YOU! I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER PRODUCT FROM YOU AGAIN! I don't see how they can live with themselves selling such crap!

Strength:

plenty of power (in-line 4.0L 6 cyl.), easy to work on: You can change the oil filter from under the hood! easy to get parts. Great for racing idiots in 4-banger jap cars...smokes them!

Weakness:

Forget about sleeping if you ride in the back seat..no freakin headrests! Seems to use a lot of gas for it's size.
Give a rough ride to passengers in the back seat.

This is a great "knock around" truck because you can go over potholes or drive off the road without having to have the front-end realigned. You don't have to worry about anyone stealing it and you can see over most traffic. Durable!!

Rugged looks, good price

Weakness:

I have had constant problems since I purchased it. I have had to replace the fuel gage twice (under warranty). It is still malfunctioning, the faulty readings have left me stranded twice in rush hour traffic! Numerous rattles, and a small rear seat capable only for small adults or children.

Overall I would suggest spending a few extra dollars and going with another manufacturer. I have no faith in the vehicles reliability.
