Strength:

Very durable, simple, KILLS any SUV off road, Designed for offroad, more than sufficiantly powered I-6, practical, Uniframe gives stablility, lowers the actual vehicle, and gives more clearance; well thought out options, awesome off-road package(includes heavy dudy suspension, big wheels, skid plates,trak-loc differencial and more) affordable, 5 speed manual trans gives you power you can only feel in a manual, and better gas mileage. These Jeeps a very focused use - performance, on and off road

Weakness:

a little bit small in the back seet, back doors a too small for adults to get into, "boxy", wind noise. Not a lot of luxery options in the first couple Cherokee models, Spare tire goes up against side window in the back(better than underneath the back end though) cheep seats on the Sport.

All you stiffs who are complaining about wind noise, compact back seats, and harsh ride YOU BOUGHT THE WRONG VEHICLE. This Jeep is not made for your daily commute to the office, or droping your kids off at school. In fact, this would be a bad joice of a vehicle of most city folks; but if you don't mind all the above "problems" and you love jeeps, Go for it. All pigs absolutely love mud... this vehicle one big pig! I give it 5 stars(highest recommendation) for the over all rating, although i do not recomend it by any means for a family vehicle

Go hard... or don't go at all

Explorers, Blazers, etc. Sure those things will take you and your little family on an off road "adventure" up a couple steep hills and stuff, but there basically a hybrid between a van and a truck. There big, clumbsy and about 20 grand more than a nice mini van, or mid sized car that would serve your purpose much better. Don't buy an SUV just for the lable "SUV", some more clearance, and the "safety" of four wheel drive(thats just their excuse to get you to buy a $30K 4x4) If your not going up and over cliffs, through 2 feet of mud, or live in the mountians save your self 10 grand and buy a MINIVAN

With the I-6 it has great power to weight ratio and is very capable off road .

Weakness:

The only thing that there would be not to like a bout it is it is not very luxurius but why shoud a 4x4 be .

I Payed around 21,000 for my new one and for that price i think i got a quality vehical . I take it to the beach all the time and run it through water up to the hood and mud .

Strength:

Reliable, strong, plenty of torque in the 4.0, handles very well for SUV, classic Jeep looks. Does very well on gas.

Weakness:

Requires a lift to really go above 30x9.5 tires, unlike suvs like Explorers, which can take 33s from the start. Not a high speed cruiser, but that's not why you buy it. Other than that, there's nothing much not to like.

I moved to the area and realised my Cobra wasn't going to cut it here. I tearfully traded it in for the Jeep. I have since fallen absolutely in love with it. I recently took it off-road with several friends and their Explorers, and to make a long story short, I am the only one without a repair bill, and they now call me "King of the Hill". I would recommend this truck to anyone wanting more substance than style. It will never let you down, and it will take everything you can throw at it and beg you for more. I've never owned a better vehicle.

Strength:

Reliable, Good off-Road performence. Built tough! Strong 4 liter 190 H.P and light weight.

Weakness:

I also have an 88 JC and it is the same body as my 99. I feel they can make it a bit more sporty looking inside and some newer trim outside would be sweet! Add a few more features and more noise reduction at the fire wall.

I bought the 99 JC brand new and it has had no major problems, the thermostat had to be replaced for some reason...(The 88 JC didnt need a new thermostat until "95" I bought the 88 JC new also) The after market parts you can buy for it are endless. Mine has a 4 inch lift, Exaust system and a double plate clutch and 34 inch thornbirds. I would recomend the cherokee to my own mother. its a great SUV and very fun to drive. Plus the straight 4 liter 6 cyl. is an easy engine to work on I would say that with a good repair manual anyone can make simple repairs...I.E. Tune-ups gasket and hose changes...So if you want a good quality SUV under $20,000 that can go off road (not just in the grass) with good power and low weight this would be the SUV for you...TRUST ME YOU WILL ENJOY DRIVING THIS CAR!!!!!!!

I have taken my JC the 88 and the 99 to places I would not even consider in the Land cruiser!!!

Strength:

Nice strong torquey engine. Good tight 5 speed t-mission. A good all around 4wd, for a very good price.

Weakness:

Wind noise.

Bought new in 94, and as a stock 4wd, had plenty of power, and very good traction. Although the only thing I had to replace was the serpertine belt at 22000, I have replaced some parts at my desire. Very accessable aftermarket parts for modification at a decent price. If you intend to drive stock, it can go anywhere any other 4wd at up to twice it's price can go. If you intend to modify for off-road, there is no comparison. The solid front axle gives more articulation and better ground traction than any IFS could begin to give. I have lifted this XJ 6", running 33" tires, regeared, added a Winch and off-road lighting. Although it can go almost anywhere off-road, I can still drive the highway at 55+, and it feels smooth and safe. After almost 7 years, and plenty of off-roading the Jeep is still nice and tight. After replacing the original 28" tires with 31" and running the original stock gears of 3.07, for almost 2 years, even towing a small boat, the original clutch is still intact. I think that says something for the 5 speed manual transmission and clutch. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone on a tight buget that has the interest or need to go anywhere or do anything.

I learned to drive with this baby and took it to hell and back.
From leaving it in 2ft of mud overnight to 2ft of air it survived it all with a minimal amount of maintenance and repair.

Weakness:

The fact that it got rearended and the unibody warped.

Why or why? You need spell check there bud.
Why I would recommend it? FOr the reasons stated.

Strength:

First and foremost is the 4 Liter I-6. Mated to the 5-speed manual
tranny makes this a damned fun vehicle to drive. I couldn't imagine
having an automatic. The stick is too much fun! Third gear in city
traffic absolutely KILLS! The only thing I've had to do to this
engine is the standard oil change/occasional tune-up stuff.

Weakness:

Yeah, it's got it's bad points, too. I suppose $20-plus at the gas pump kinda sucks. Being a two door, it's really hard to get in the back
seat unless you're 4 years old. Some of the interior hardware is a
bit flimsy. The gear shift knob is loose. The lid on the center
console needed reinforcing (the screws holding it to the hinge
broke). The front end tends to nose dive with harder braking.

I drove this Jeep off the lot with 13 miles on it. It now has 114000.
During the summer I load a large set of drums, cases and hardware in
it twice a week and the Jeep never even breaks a sweat. It doesn't
matter whether I'm taking my stuff dozens of miles or hundreds, the
Jeep ROCKS!

I've put two aftermarket stereos in it. The dashboard was relatively
easy to get into. The factory speakers don't sound half bad at all.
It is a bit noisy at highway speeds, but I'm sure most of that is the
fault of the tires being the size they are.

As far as value goes, the '96's were the last of the old body style as
opposed to the new rounded ones. Jeep says they changed almost every
nut and bolt when designing the new ones. That's fine, but they also
"plushed" the Cherokee right out of the financial reach of quite a few people. Go to your local Jeep dealer and price them now. They're
anywhere from $19,000-$26,000! That being said, I got a DAMN GOOD deal! Brand new for $16,000! Leather wheel, tinted windows, roof rack, A/C,
rear vent windows. Spend an extra 175.00 on a better stereo and away
we go! I love it.

Not to mention I like the older body style better. It looks meaner,
especially in black.

The way I see it, you're either a Jeep person or you're not. If you're
not, that's too bad.
