Jeep Cherokee
Strength:
Great looking vehicle, sharp, natural ride more down to earth vehicle. Durable no problems so far.
Weakness:
Very limited room in the front, "don''t know where to put my kleenex box!" Back seat uncomfortable for three people. I love my jeep, I purchased a red one, shiny and sleek. Very reliable, runs through the snowstorms like a sunny day without a rock on the road. Up high, you can see way ahead of you, four wheel drive gives you great power and control. Drivetrain. I have the much aligned 2.5l four cylinder and although lacking hauling power it has survived well. The four wheel drive prowess of this vehicle has taken me out of many situations where other car would have left me walking or dead.
Weakness:
Had to upgrade the carb to a Weber. Big plus especially with a free flow exhaust. Hydraulic clutch has had a few recurring problems. My Cherokee just went over 200,000 miles and I wanted to celebrate by telling folks what a great vehicle this has been taking all the abuse the desert southwest can dish out and still running like a champ. Powerful and very capable machine. NO ONE can beat this vehicle''s package of engine, brakes, transmission, 4 wheel drive abilities. Fire engine red paint is showing no wear. Tough, unique, square lines stand out in a sea of jelly bean shaped SUVs and cars. Surprising decent gas mileage for a real SUV (14 when towing, 20 highway w/out boat) when kept to 65MPH. No airbag, kid can sit up front without getting crushed by airbag when rear seats are folded for cargo.
Weakness:
Rear seat comfort is poor for 3 adults; high wind and engine noise above 70 MPH; interior was dated looking even when new. The cupholders can''t hold anything larger than a can. No airbags!!! Kids always want to sit up front and play with radio, less safe for adults. Purchased new in 1994: a loaded Jeep Cherokee Country. Only options we didn''t get: leather interior and fog lights. Its got: 4.0 liter 6 cylander engine, anti-lock brakes, automatic transmission, Select Track (full and part time selectable fourwheel drive); heavy duty 5,000 lb trailer tow package (included the hitch, upgraded electrics, full sized spare, synthetic rear differential, transmission and transfer case fluids and lower rear axle ratio). We added a Jeep rear tire carrier and an aftermarket 12 disk Clarion CD changer (mounted in rear luggage area), which plays through the FM radio. We bought new in 1994, using a buying service at local dealer. We have only 95,000 miles on odo. I recently added a pair of adjustable air shocks on the rear to deal with extreemly heavy rear end cargo and tongue weight loads we put on when towing our boat on long trips. We''ve had only very minor problems in 7 years: dead FM radio tuner (replaced with higher power stereo); both rear electric window switches were smashed by severe use by two kids; various very minor oil and fluid leaks; a burned out dash bulb for the full time 4 wheel drive indicator. The brake pads were replaced and front disks were overhauled at 50,000 miles. Transmission fluid seal gaskets were replaced at same time. Ride: firm, off road capabilities are excellent. Short wheel base and steering make for very small turning radius which is great for tight spots and backing trailer in confined areas. I have followed the heavy duty maintenance schedule, which doubles the cost of maintenance. This means I have oil changed every 3,500 miles (instead of 7,000); and we change the transmission, transfer case, rear differential fluids every year before towing season starts. We''ve pulled our boat on long trips of 500-1000 miles, in very hot, stop and go traffic, through mountains, and with a full load of cargo inside the Jeep. The Jeep can maintain 65 plus speeds on even steep highway grades, and I find that locking out the 4th gear (as the manual instructs) increases mileage and reduces annoying shifting between 3 and 4. Comfort front: very good, seats recline and adjust well, tilt wheel is highly reccomended for driver. Rear: sufficient for 2 kids; the narrow rear seat will NOT comfortably seat three adults for a trip. Great low end torque. Steady mileage, 20mpg hauling just myself or a 17ft boat.
Weakness:
Chrysler''s mistake is not making it anymore ... can we have a moment of silence please, for the Cherokee''s most untimely demise? There is most definitely an empty spot in their lineup now, in which the Liberty is just a pretender. I purchased the Jeep used with high miles, but I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever with over 150K miles on it now. Rugged, dependable, roomy enough, it is definitely a sport utility vehicle - not for looks only. I''ve driven logging roads in mud and have had complete confidence in it. I have to say that after looking at the Jeep Liberty, I was completely underwhelmed - the Liberty was designed for the urban yuppie, not for someone that wants to get their vehicle dirty in the back woods. poor gas milage, cheaply done interior The Jeep has been in the family since late 1995, (it''s a 1996 model)when it was new. It has taken six or seven trips to california from texas. It just turned over 170,000 miles and it keeps on going. The only problems we''ve had is a starter at 135,000 miles and a small electrical problem ($100 to fix) at 85,000 miles. What a WONDERFUL vehicle!!! Similar Products Used: Grand Cherokee |

Weakness:
Gas mileage, after 2500 miles only 17.5 per gallon average Very nice SUV outstanding fit and finish and good powertrain. I''ve owned several 4-wheel drive vehicles and still own a chev extended cab 4x4. The jeep is first class, I bought the limited loaded with tow package, select-trac, and off road package. It pulls my 3000lb boat nicely (but not like my v8 truck. The interior is well laid out and the power seats are very comfortable. I am kind of a car nut (I own five), so before I buy anything I research and drive everything. There is no other mid size SUV comes close, I drove the Escape, Xterra, Hyundai and rav four. The Jeep is in a class of it''s own. I liked the Xterra except you set on the floor with no power seat option, and with 170hp the engine is too weak for towing even though Nissan claims a 5000lb tow capacity. Good job D/B! None Ihave found the cherokee to be a well built vehicle from top to bottom, the 4 liter inline six is strong and economical, the drive train is straight forward tough construction. I have 188 thousand miles on the same engine, body, and drivetrain. with the exception of a water pump the rest is still original. the only hang up i give it is in the quality of the electronics/electrics. they seem to be a little less durable. other than that for the price it''s definitly at the top of the suv market. Strength:
The practically bullet-proof 4.0 H.O. engine.
Weakness:
Interior wind noise. As with any vehicle this one has its quirks, but overall it dependable, economic (for a 4WD), and very reliable. I've had many years experience with 4WDs and this is by far the overall best one. Also as a former mechanic I can appreciate the engineering excellence of this vehicle. Similar Products Used: I have 140K miles on my Cherokee. Many of the reviewers here have 200K plus on theirs. It would be interesting to see the Isuzu/Hyundai/Nissan/ Mitsubishi/etc owners come back and re-review when their "great" cars have 200K+ miles. I imagine the 5 star ratings would be few and far between. When you consider the number of people who have had their Cherokees a long time and still rate them very highly, you can get an idea of the quality of this vehicle. |
