Strength:

Buletproof Engine, 5speed Tranny, 4wd. Very easy to work on

Weakness:

Broken E-Brake, Gas Mileage, Build qulaity (be careful & shop around)

Bought this used 2 years ago w/40,000, just turned 88,000. I shopped hard over a year, casually for 3, so I drove many different models. Very spotty build quality. If you get a good one you won''t be disapointed. 5 speed w/ I6 very quick & fun to drive, but not the best setup for very slow off roading. I don''t notice the road noise, but I''m pretty deaf anyway. Hope to get at least 200k out of her w/o major$$.

Strength:

4.0 engine''''s torque, power, and reliability. offroad ability in stock form.

Weakness:

can get a bit loud when going over 70mph. Backseat room. too bad they don''''t make it anymore

This is my third one. My first was an ''''87 I got used and served me to 220,000 miles. The ''''98 got totaled which is why I have the 2001. These vehicles do what they are intended to do and that is go anywhere. I do a lot of camping, mt. biking and skiing so I need to be able to get places reliable. The 4wd is amazing. Amazing that you can offroad well in this truck stock. I was tempted to get a Liberty, but this engine just lasts. There is a reason this truck hasn''''t changed much.

Great all around

Weakness:

Gas mileage, can take a while to start(but has never failed)

I don''t see how anyone could dislike a Jeep! Mine has had some problems...seats get holes, paint begins to chip, basically stuff you''d expect from a 9 year old vehical. Mine seems to be good for about anything. It''s fast, with a very reasonable acceloration. It''s great when it snows. I think it''s confortable, and has plenty of cargo room. Oh, and it''s very safe. I was recently in an accident with it, and it took a beating, but kept me very safe

Strength:

Goes thru snow in 2wd (all terrain T/A''s)where most other SUV''s need 4wd. 4.0 i-6 is awesome. Good on gas. Turns on a dime. Shift on the fly is "seamless".

Weakness:

Constant up-keep on the surface rust, thats it!

I purchased my 1988 (pre-Chrysler) 2dr, inline 4.0 six cyl. 4x4 Cherokee from a friend in ''93, with 93,000 mi. for 5k. I have always been sceptical of jeeps but for the price, what the heck, right? Let me tell you, if you can find one of these 88''s buy it! Everything is straight forward as far as brakes (pre ABS), tune up, electrical. Just your basic low maintenance, go anywhere, do anything, Jeep. Mine today has 155,000 vertually (other than oil, tires, exhaust) maintenance free miles! Keep in mind, once Chrysler bought Jeep, they started to "enhance" some systems, which frankly made the Cherokee a little less dependable. I am considering a ''98 GC for a replacement, but after reading this forum, I may just keep my ''88.This is all I have had to replace since 93. 1.Top dead center sensor (2x) $30 2.oilpan-Rusted thru at 145,000 $35 3.alternator at 150,000!the ORIGINAL!!! 4.Lateral link (holds front susp. from moving laterally.) $110 This baby has not been babied either. I have towed my Lund walleye boat thru Canada many times with no problem at all. They don''t make ''em like they used to I guess, or maybe I am just a lucky guy!

Strength:

Extremely durable and reliable service record. Takes one hell of a beating.

Weakness:

Somewhat noisy engine.(can be fixed by adding some extreme dynomat sound padding to all panels.)

The 89 that my family has owned has been running over 165,000 miles and is still running on mostly original equipment parts. It still has the original inline-6 and 4-speed auto without any problems. It has bee stolen over three times and has still performed well under it''s numerous years of use. It has not given any major problems and it has managed not to fall apart and stay in very nice shape. It still runs almost as good as when we bought it. The ''94 has been running very well too. It also has the automatic and the inline-6. So far it has not given us any problems as well. It has about 75,000 miles and still runs very nicely. Both go through bad conditions like it was nothing. They are pretty great on long distance driving. If anything, I would buy another one although unfortunately, they are no longer being produced.

Doors fall off Piece of crap, buy a ford truck

The cherokee reviews look pretty good compared to the grand cherokee reviews so I must have got a lemon. We bought the jeep with 27,000 miles on it and I thought there cant be a whole lot wrong with it. The drivers door had already fallen off before we bought it. The door did not get welded on straight enough and there was even more wind noise than normal. If your jeep doesnt start its probabaly the start neutral switch(350.00). I could go on & on but you get the idea. Dont buy a Jeep!! I hope the person we sold it to has better luck than us.

Strength:

Fits a family of 5 very comfortably, drives nice and looks great on the road.

Weakness:

Gear shift is questionable, I haven''t had time to check it out but I read on the internet they have been investigating this problem in the 1995-1999 Jeep.

So far its a great SUV but we have noticed a problem in the shifting from park to drive. It shifts hard and once when we shift in drive it shifted back instead of forward. I am not sure why. It gets horrible gas mileage but we have three children and like to use it for vacations in the snow. It drives good and is very comfortable. We just have a few concerns.

Strength:

Strong, safe, rubber-covered bumpers, good engine, quick turning, good vis, pt time 4-wheel, all systems go so far!

Weakness:

Driver seat sagged badly, somewhat uncomfortable seats, should be better for this price. Yes, very noisy (from wind) at 50mph or higher.

I have to admit this has turned out to be a pretty good car. To judge from the number of reviews here and an average rating over 4, other people think so too (I think that it is typical that people who have a bad experience with a car will want to write about it, more than those who have a good one). I''ve had no major problems in 4+ years with over 30k miles. Part-time 4wheel is great for snow. This car performs well, and is rugged -- in the few incidents I''ve had where other cars hit my rubber bumpers, their cars came out worse than mine -- the rubber bumpers show nothing in minor benders at 10mph or less! (Always get the car with the rubber bumpers, I''d suggest). So far so good. However only 5 yrs old.
