Strength:

4.0L power, looks like a jeep, 4x4 capabilities, fun to drive.

Weakness:

loud engine inside and out, low roof (hit my head getting in more than a few times!), cheap plastic interior.

The 97-01 Cherokees are great looking, hard performing Jeeps. If you want a 4x4 that doesnt get stuck in 2in of mud or can manuver tight trails and dont care about it riding like a Land Cruiser than the XJ is for you.

Strength:

High clearance, big 6 cyl 4.0 engine, unique looks, 50+ years experience in building 4X4's, price.

Weakness:

Lots of road, wind and engine noise gets through. Limited [passenger and cargo room.

If you enjoy the sound of rushing wind and the roar of a good engine on the open highway, (with the windows up) this car's for you! We bought the Cherokee Sport 4X4 and other than being very noisy in the cabin, I can't complain. Hey, its a JEEP, not a luxury car. You just have to know that. This is the last of the Cherokees and the only year model that Consumer Reports likes. Mine has been trouble free for 27,000 miles except for a faulty sensor in the fuel tank that was repaired.

Weakness:

always in need of repair.

Constant problem with check engine light being on. Engine misses on cylinder no. 3. Repeated attempts to repair by dealer unsuccessful, but not for want of trying. Each repair is different, but fails to correct problem. Purchased new. No has 57,000 miles. I will never buy another.

Strength:

Best dependable basic go anywhere vehicle I have ever owned. Have researched other SUVs & am almost certain I'll buy another late model Cherokee.

Weakness:

Replaced water pump (common problem) and valvle cover gaskets (probably really didn't need to. Would like better gas milage & less road noise.

Bought new and at almost 240,00 miles it can still top 110 mph on the highway and handle everything from the Rockys to southwest deserts to Canadian forests to Florida swamps. Beats the Liberty I am currently renting for a week to see if I like it.

Power is there when needed - has gotten me out of some stick situations on my daily commute. Handles pretty well for an SUV. Can't wait for the snow to fly!

Weakness:

Maybe not suited for drivers over 6 foot. Also, mileage, but if you drive sensibly you should be ok.

I've only owned the Cherokee since May of this year, but have already put on 11,000 troublefree miles on it. My family spent two weeks in the Blue Ridge mountains. In the meantime, we put on 3,000 miles and the truck did not miss a beat. We had an 18 cubic foot cargo carrier on top and still got 20-21 mpg (with the AC off). However, the mpg drops significantly when I get heavy on the gas pedal. Front seat fits me perfectly (I'm 5'11"), but I need the seat set all the way back. People taller than 6 foot may find things a bit cramped. The back seat is perfect for the rug rats, but adults may have trouble getting in and out.

is still a better off road vehicle than the ford

Weakness:

chrysler!!!

We had a 92 cherokee we loved (sadly it died on 9/11/01). This is not the same jeep. First, couldn't get it in standard transmission. It doesn't handle as well in snow (we lived in NH for 7 yrs when we owned the 92), the back end breaks loose too much. It also doesn't pull our trailer as well. We mountain bike and take the jeeps off road to get to riding spots, and this jeep is squirrelly. Then, to add insult to injury, the paint is peeling off the hood-Chrysler says it's from bird poop-some tough off road vehicle! Good thing our birds only hit the hood, or the whole car would be paintless. Have had differential leaks, replaced the brakes, and the engine light comes on regularly(something to do with the gas cap not sealing properly), all in less than 35000 miles. With the older cherokee, I was confident that it could handle everything and now wish we had had the engine rebuilt (200,000+ miles) rather than buying the new one. I wanted another off road vehicle and got one that can't withstand bird poop.

roomy compartment with lots of luggage room, fairly decent stock radio, AC is strong, very good pickup for manuevering in traffic.

bumpy ride, trying to get used to "blind spots"

So far I love this vehicle, a bit of a rough ride, but I knew that was the case before I bought it. only 49,000 miles on it hope it last for awhile without too much problems

Weakness:

The use of plastic all over...But it doesn't matter to me. The Aluminum wheels that come with the country and limited models are a pain to clean.

Awsome Jeep!...Has great Handling. It has awsome performance and realiability from the 4.0 I6 Engine. The looks are top notch escpecially the country, classic, and Limited models. Awsome!
