Strength:
fuel economy for an SUV. reliability and "toughness". cheap purchase cost.... I hate how those 4-runners and such are all so expensive.
Weakness:
lack of engine power.... and the fact that it isn't 4x4. (a/c woudl be really nice in the summer) I have an absolute base model... 2wd, 2.5 liter 4 cylinder, 5 spd, no a/c, no powersteering, no power locks or windows etc. This isn't luxery, and is not at all a power house... basically on the highway I have to row through the gears on the big hills. Because its 2wd it doesn't go far off road, but it can stand a ton of abuse (which it has) and get great fuel economy for an SUV (35 miles per gallon on highway). I don't like the suspension in most jeep cherokees (looks like they are sitting on their butts) but my bro put in a couple add-a-leafs and I have had up to 2000 pounds loaded in there for short distances! the reliability has been great on this thing:) I am really happy about that, the only magor thing was clutch related (maybe my own fault... whatever) and it has 230k km's on it... the engine is suffering from low compresion and needs a rebuild due to its taking a beating. Great engine, great power Value - this is a steal compared to many SUV's on the market today it's not as luxurious as some SUV's, but that kind of adds to it - the "retro" look, you know. 4W drive is great on ice and snow, unstoppable. Looks great Easy to work on, the engine and underside is very simple.
Weakness:
A bit cramped on the inside. Some say its noisy, but I think its OK Back seat is a bit cramped, and no headrests. From what I can see, brakes and transmission might be an issue. Mine are fine, and no other obvious problems. I don't like the Chrysler dealers that I have healt with so far. I think their servie is below what I have come to expect from other dealers. The good news is that my Jeep is past its warranty deadline, so I intend to just use the garage next door. They charge a lot less for the same work, and I don't have to listen to dealer excuses. Not great on gas - seems not too bad on the highway (@24mpg), but the city seems @14 or so. But, then again, what SUV is not like this? Hope old George B doesn't start shooting at Iraq, maybe prices will not go too high! I just bought this, and am very happy so far. the 4.0 I engine is terrific. It pulls my snowmobile trailer easily. I have command trac on mine, probably would have preferred selectrac, but this does a great job, too. I don't think it is very noisy, as some seem to, and the ride is quite nice. The interior is a bit small, and the rear seats should have headrests. It sat outside, with the blockheater unplugged, for a week while we were on vacation, and the temperature here dropped to -34 C (that's seriously cold, folks!), and it started no problem! Not every vehicle can claim that! It's very manouverable, and easy to park. It's fun to drive! The radio and CD on mine is very good, maybe I'm just not particular. I drove afew of these before buying this one, and some seemed to wander a bit on the road; mine does not do that at all. Mine came with Goodyear Wranglers (I think this was the stack tire) that were quite worn at 55 K when I bought it. I put on new BFG All terrain SUV tires, and a HUGE difference. I hope to get a lot of years and miles out of this. In our area, we see a lot of these, and my partner has one (1990) that has 230K on it, and is still going. In short, it may require some repairs from time to time, but this is a timeless vehicle that just seems to go and go forever. To me, it seems to be a great value for the money, especially in these times when SUV's are so horrifically overpriced. Who wants to pay $40,000 + for an Explorer or Durango, when you can get this, which is better, for less than 1/2 that? Similar Products Used: 1990 Toyota 4 - Runner - nice, but too expensive, and even more cramped. 1993 Mazda MPV - also a good vehicle, but absolutely no room in the back with the 3rd seat up, and expensive. 1989 Bronco 2 - |

Strength:
4 wheel independent double wishbone suspension(and mine has upgraded springs,. shocks, sway bars front and rear, strut bars front and rear and a full poly urethane bushing swap). Gas mileage(30 city 35 hwy).Parts are affordable. Engine swaps are readily availabe(many that weren't ever meant to go into this vehicle).
Weakness:
water pump belt is connected to timing belt. water pump is weak. i replaced 2 water pumps inside a year. did i mention the water pump sucks? Brakes are weak and don't last long. The little 1.5 liter that tried sucks. Thankfully our good japaneese friends made the b-16a and b-16b , b18a and b, and the all mighty beast the h22a, these v-tec hi revers bolt in with the aid of mount kits made by the best company on the plantet-Hasport. This is best car ever made. It is somewhat fast, outhandles any american heavy, too much hp for turns vehicle, and gets great gas mileage. I raced a 2002 Chevy Camaro SS down a 2 lane windy mountain road and i lost him after two miles! well the road was twenty miles down the hill. I waited for him for 15 minutes at the bottom. He was a friend of mine, with an argument that horsepower out does handling in any test. Well he eats those words now. Great power! Very confident 4WD system. Good fuel economy (average 19 city/ 24 highway).
Weakness:
No full-time 4WD system availible with 5-speeds. Meaning you can only have it in 4WD on slippery surfaces (ice/moderate-heavy snow/mud). This has been a pretty good vehicle. The only reason I considered looking at a Jeep is because you can get 5-speeds in them (as opposed to the Jimmy, Bravada, and Blazer). Being a Daimler/Chrysler product I was nervous about it's reliability, but have found it to be pretty reliable so far in the 22,000 miles I have put on it since I bought it. Only design downfall is the lack of a full-time 4WD transfer case on the 5-speed models. The 4.0L I-6 provides plenty of power to beat many other SUVs with in a red light race. Never once gotten stuck with it's part-time 4WD system. Similar Products Used: 1989 Jeep Cherokee Laredo |

VERY reliable, great on gas, fun to drive
Weakness:
Its small for a family of 5. Great car. It's been through everything imaginable. VERY reliable and great on gas. It's also fun to drive. With three kids, we needed a bigger vehicle, so we resorted to a minivan. We tried to sell the civic, but its a good thing it didn't sell bc we've realized how great of a car it is. However, we have had the clutch replaced and the axle replaced...but other than that, its perfect. We're thinking of getting a new car...it well almost certainly be a HONDA!!! windsheild wipers suck, gas is horrible for in town traffic. I grow to love this vehicle more every time i get behind the wheel. Meets and exceeds all off road capablities at a stock level. I can only imagine its potential. Similar Products Used: k-5 blazer , ford ranger, expedition |

4.0L I-6 engine, for something that's akin to a brick this thing flys! The 4wd is great. This car has good reliability, which is why it maintains it's resale value. Has personality, and timeless beauty (almost the same design since '84).
Weakness:
It's not that loud as some say. And if it is loud for you, you will get use to it (becomes like white noise). Little parts go bad, like the window regulator for me, but then again, that happens to most cars. like my brothers 2003 Chyrsler concorde. My girl-friend's Ford, etc. Vehicles aren't perfect. I wouldn't have any other vehicle. I will keep this Jeep forever. I haven't had any major problems. Only minor problems. And, i'm happy to deal with them. (and actually, i um, ::cough:: caused some of the problems....) I like the fact that I don't have to shovel my driveway in the winter. :D The 4WD is fantastic. I like to smoke ricers...hee hee. 4 wheel drive in bad weather.
Weakness:
Check engine light constantly coming on, spark plugs replaced twice, hood repainted after owning for only 3 months, replaced tires at 25,000 miles, speaker went bad on passenger side. Now the door locks on same side have gone. Unreliable and frustrating having to take in to dealership for constant repairs. Makes you wonder when the warranty is up whether worth keeping or trading in on something reliable. This was the biggest mistake I ever made in purchasing a vehicle. This vehicle has been in for more warranty repairs than all my other vehicles I have owned put together. Similar Products Used: Chevy, should have stuck with Chevy!!!! |

Weakness:
Very light,so need chains in snow. Loud on highway. I use this vehical to deliver mail out of,and has been super! Stop, and go constantly at mailboxes with no problems. I had a ford taurus which had a new motor and three transmissions in one year,so this is a blessing! Similar Products Used: Ford bronco---died in 6 months. |
