Strength:

great power/very fun to drive/great off roading-for the experienced only/much more substantial then a rav or crv/lots of mech features for $/stand-out styling/great handling for vehicle type/good stone chip protection from mudflaps/excelent speakers for factory system/excelent limited-slip rear axle/did i say fun?

Weakness:

Dangerous bugs in abs system programing and design/dramatic maintenence increase after only 40k/high oil consumption post 40k/cheap upholstry on seat bolsters-door panels/noisy 4wd/cd changer problems/weak AC/can become dangerous in slippery conditions without warning/silly horn/windows freeze shut easily in winter/exterior door handles distort door panels/back window should open/sunfading on resin hardtop/interior plastic scratches easily/gas milage lousy even for vehicle type/long wait on simple engine parts/poor resale value

1999 V6 4wd Hardtop/I tend to give any car a run for its money, doing outside sales-i go everywhere. the isuzu amigo v6 4wd has proven to be capable of doing just about anything. Except....now that i am pushing 45k miles the problems are seeming to multiply with the vehicle. at 35k my abs computer went out and was replaced at the dealership, soon after the catalyst converter and pipe seperrated and was replaced, my air conditioner compressor bearings are bad and is scheduled to be replaced And now, the oil consumption is starting to dissapoint. i had no problems untill 40k miles. I started to hear a serious ticking and was surprised to see it had consumed a full quart of oil 1k after its oil changed, without warning(i havent had a modern car burn oil with less then 100k miles-and ive owned 10 in the past 14 years!) also i was disappointed with the upholstry quallity and seat padding, however isuzu replaced my driver seat. also the 6 disk changer developed problems at around 42k and is being replaced at next service. the 4wd is exceedingly noisy(better then first generation though) and the abs has a BAD habit of activating in the rear brakes only with any bump while braking, decreasing effectiveness. When full abs activates-the pedal kick up can be quite disconcerting if one is not ready for the quick increase in pedal pressure needed. I do, however, have some praise for the vehicle, the power is excellent with the v6, and seemed to gain horsepower with a new air filter and sythetic oil. Being a first generation owner as well-the interior and power features make the new one feel like a lexus next to the original(more like a camry for you "newbies"). Off road capability is very good, however, one should be experienced in short-wheelbase off roading before attempting to exceed 25 mph on dirt roads, the amigo can get very loose without notice! handling is very good for a full frame vehicle, but may be a bit rough for those expecting a "car-like" ride. I can see why the amigo resale value is less then average. At least i bought it end-of year for 6k under sticker. I am starting to get a love it-hate it attitude. With the new oil use increase, i think its trade-in time. I am rather tolerant with vehicles, but i would not expect the problems i am starting to have until 125k or so with a "modern" vehicle. Anyway, it was fun while it lasted :)

Model Reviewed: Amigo Hardtop, auto-speed

Strength:

good price/power ratio. I bought this one basically out of its strong engine. But that was when gas price was $1.40 range :-).

Weakness:

* a lot of services (see above)
* bad braking (also see above)
* bad rear and side view (as many pointed out)
* bad handling in snow and icy condition (mine NOT 4x4)
* low gas millage
* eats a lot of engine oil

It looked cool and inexpensive when I first spot it. But then I ran into problems and getting frastrated. Good thing is the 100,000 mile warrenty, otherwise will cost me a lot to fix the problems:

1, the back door couldn't be locked. They fixed it.
2, the factory installed alarm sounded when the whether was cold, like below 10. Got to get up every night. The dealer fixed it
3, Rear left side of the tire keep losing air. Got to inflat every week or so. I thought a nail or something, but an auto service shop said the tire is not plugged right and asked me to change the tire. I used my backup tire and same thing happens. The dealer refused to fix, saying the warrenty doesn't cover tires. I think there is a problem with the car, instead of the tire.
4, ABS Module (a device under the hood) was still running after I turned off the engine. It really scared me, since it made a strange noise and I couldn't stop it. The dealer told me to pull the power cord connects to the thing. I did and it effectively disabled my ABS. Eventually the dealer fixed the problem. They also told me that they changed a bolt that is on recall.
5, My engines would die immediately after I restart it in a hot whether. I took the car to the dealer again and they fixed it, saying the intake gasket was cracked.
6, Brake will lose the grip when driving over a bump and I think it is very serious problem. But dealer won't admit they got such a problem and keep un-fixed.

Strength:

Peppy SUV, with big V6 power. Nice offroad ability.

Weakness:

Brake chatter. Strange noises from engine when accelerating. Some smoke when starting up but goes away. Uses alot of oil too. Incredibly annoying clunk from rear right when going over speed bumps.

$25,000 - Next time I will shop around more than just Isuzu range, although I think my problems with this car arent common ones. Dealer is trying theyr best to help though at least.

Strength:

Powerful V6, little rocket.
Cool looks.
very comfortable ride ( ironman edition).

Weakness:

crampy back seat.

$23000. Every option except the aluminum wheel. Really happy with the suv so far, more powerful than all the other small suv out there. Very good off road capability. If you are young and want to have fun go with amigo, but if you want a conventional suv go with something bigger.

Strength:

Looks tough, lots of room on the inside, convertible

Weakness:

Leaky top, crappy gas mileage, loud on highways, pain in the ass to get in and out of the backseat, easy to break into, poor acceleration.

I've had little repairs on my Amigo since I bought it two years ago. It's a great first time car to have (bought it when I was 16) and they definetely belong on the beach. The acceleration and gas mileage suck, but it's not unbearable. Good car for your money. It more for the younger kids that can hop in and out of the back seat when the top is off. It's also good to have an extra hand when putting the top back on. The Amigo uses little oil and like I mentioned, I've had few repairs. Only major are new alternator and my clutch disc slipped once, all under 300 dollars.

Strength:

Style, uniqueness, engine, and the build strength

Weakness:

Bouncy ride, lack of lights on the doors, and it doesn't come with a tv, microwave and a washer and dryer.

This thing is great, It does everything I could ask it to do and more. It beats wimps off the stoplights, rides the drit roads with style, crusies the beach with beauty and washes up nice enough to take a date out it. I would never get anything else. I even took my first one into a telephone pole at 40 mph and walked away without a scratch. I love it!

Strength:

Good rear axle, comforatble vehicle to drive around town, though on long distances it becomes less comfortable. The engine is a very lively thing, never leaves me wanting for more.

Weakness:

Too small, rear window you can't see out of, lots of blind spots. The front suspension is bad for off-roading. I get hung up all the time because of the suspension.

I have voted this way because it has been a decent vehicle, I dont' regret it, but I wish I had chosen something else. This vehicle has left me wanting more from a vehicle. Overall it has been good and reliable. Just not enough to really satisfy my wanting to go further off the beaten path.

Model Reviewed: Amigo

Strength:

It looks cool, and the mileage is great.

Weakness:

Pretty much the same gripes everyone else has: bad rear visibilty, the top is next to impossible to get on by yourself, not very easy to get in the back set, but once you do, you've got a surprising amount of room, and finally, the damn top leaks all the time.

I've had some major problems with my Amigo in the last few months. I blew out one of the head gaskets and had to wait close to two months to get the bugger fixed. The day after I got it out of the shop, another head gasket blew. This was a great car for the first two years I had it, but now I'm afraid it's reached it's prime. And to think, the 88 Ford Ranger I sold to get this Amigo just cleared 300,000 miles.
