Weakness:

Nothing but exspense and troubles. Honda dealer in Indiana service department said its not a Honda it's an Izuzu honda is ashamed of it but they still rip me off every time I take it in for sevice. Last time it wes over 2000.0 for a brake job and the caliper fell off before I got home. Cnt't say enough thing bad about it it ticks and burns oil now and I am going to drive it till its dead because I am afraid to even buy a new car. Can't trust any one these days it just a gamble and who will rip you off the next time

EVERYTHING Basically!

DO NOT BUY A HONDA (aka Isuzu Rodeo in disguise) PASSPORT!! The dealer has had our car more than we have. I plan on going after Honda for this car since it is nothing but a LEMON! The Check Engine light continuallys comes on within 10-minutes of leaving dealership and the dealership fixes whatever they 'think' might be the problem and sends it home. It is notorious for the cruise control engaging for no reason expecially near my home in front of my son's elementary school (VERY DANGEROUS). Again, they pretend to fix the problem just to find it happening again on the way home from the dealership! I am going on a vacation and am going to have to rent a car because I do not trust this vehicle. We were mislead as to the warranty coverage and Honda should be ASHAMED ASHAMED ASHAMED!! We are the joke of our neighborhood because every week we have a different rental car in the driveway!! I REPEAT DO NOT BUY A PASSPORT!! If you do, sad sad day!!

Strength:

very sporty/rugged. most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. gas mileage is acceptable.

Weakness:

The quality of service from Honda has not been acceptable. i find them very rude to all of their customers whenever they deal with them. it is probably just my Honda Service dept. in particular but I have made many complaints with "Honda Customer Service"

When I was shopping for a Honda Civic, a woman came in to give back for 1998 Honda Passport because the lease was up. It was fully loaded and the price was about the same as the Civic I was looking at. After talking to her for 20 minutes about her vehicle I decided to test drive it after she had left. I immediately fell in love with it which I have never done before. It accelerated with authority, was very comfortable, had only 28,000 miles and I knew I could get a good price. I slept on it over night and returned the next day to purchase it which I did. After they detailed it, the black paint was like a mirror. No dents or anything. I bought the extended warranty just to be covered and had it checked out by a service station who said the vehicle was definitely taken care of. Here I am, 56,000 miles later (a total of 84,000 miles) and I am still just as happy as I was when I bought it. I took delivery in Aug. 01 What I have noticed: Very good power, handling is very impressive, gas mileage is acceptable, the seats are perfect-- the leather has held up very well and they remain very supportive and comfortable. The Passport is a great vehicle despite its Isuzu heritage which so far, I've found to be terrific. I know people with Chevys and Fords (blazers and explorers) that have had problem and problem at just 30,000 miles! The gauges inside are very easy to read and clean looking. I have had several rattles coming from the driver's door which have been fixed every time under warranty (4 times) and the rubber insulator from the rear door came off, causing water to leak in. New insulator was $14.00 but still covered under warranty. I have never had a mechanical problem and do not plan on it. Full care is taken of this vehicle and it is a pleasure. As old as it is (5 years) it really does look brand new and I still get that "THIS IS A 98!?" from people that i make guess the year :-) Anyone that is interested in buying a vehicle that is very sporty, fun to drive, safe, and reliable at a very reasonable price, the Passport is a good pick. Another thing I've noticed is that the newer models seem to be pleasing more people so I guess the redesign (which I do have) brought on a lot of good new traits. It uses 1/4 quart of oil every 3,000 miles. Seems very normal and has always done so.

V-6 Motor is Junk! Get rid of it NOW

When I bought this Honda Passport/Isuzu Rodeo, I had been shopping for a Toyota 4-Runner. I had seen the Honda/Isuzu and like the looks. I found this 1996 lease return, Passport/Rodeo in very good shape and had it checked out by a reputable dealer. It checked out fine. I had owned several Hondas of various models and knew they had great reliablilty. I should have kept looking for a Toyota. I just found out today that this 1996 Honda/Isuzu is a joke at the Honda/Isuzu dealers. Just call your local Honda Dealer and mention the Passport. You'll see what I mean. Once you have problems with the valve train/lifters (and you will) you might as well send it to the crusher. This engine (V-6) has 24 valves and a simple lifter repair will cost you around 3,000 dollars. Not me. I'll try to sell it as-is and buy the 4 Runner like I should have in the first place. If you have one that still runs....sell it NOW! Honda/Isuzu....you blew it! I'll never own another of either. When your own technicions laugh and tell me it's a joke, its bad. The sad part is that this car is otherwise very clean. But it's not worth fixing. It was built as a ticking time bomb. Upon further checking I found there are other built in defects with this motor. Unexplained oil consumption, motors blowing up without warning. Just spend a little time doing an internet search (like I should have) NEVER AGAIN HONDA! You need to find some way to make this up to your loyal customers. This was just dirty.

i am currently on my second passport. my 1996 EX Passport ($28,100) was totaled in an accident 3 MONTHS after i bought it. other drivers fault. the tahoe i fit rolled twice and my entire front was smashed in and i was rear ended by the car behind me which totaled the back too. the passport kept me very safe and i was the only driver to walk away from the scene. 21st century bought me a brand new passport but 3 months later which is when i had to get a new car only the next year models were out so i ended up with a year newer one! i am currently driving a champagne 1997 4 wheel drive EX automatic. I have 126 thousand on her right now and there havent been any problem aside from normal wear and tear which come with any vehicle that has over 100K miles. overall i couldnt be happier with my purchase. it is a safe vehicle and the 3.2 liter v6 is very strong. sounds good too. still on the first transmission and it shifts as smooth as ever, have never had any oil problem, oil change every 3K miles, everything is in tip top shape. I DID however get the annoying Check Engine light come on one day when i was driving in 2 feet of snow but after i restarted the car, it went off and has not come back on. i really hope to get another 126 thousand out of this baby because it still feels brand new despite the couple dents and of course the odometer reading of 126350 or somewhere right around there. this is a dependable, long lasting vehicle. all my friends and their gear fit in the truck very well and nobody can believe how it looks/drives considering the mileage. from what i gather the transmissions on the passports is made by GM which is not a bad thing because its used on all the full sized SUVs and trucks.

---If you take care of it, you wont have any. I really use mine and it just KEEPS ON GOING. --well, its a little gas thirsty on the trail

I did not know I was buying a vehicle that has a lot in common with a Izuzu. When I found out, I was a little angry but this vehicle has proved to me that it is one TOUGH vehicle. Alot of my driving consists of off road adventures and a lot of highway miles. I have managed to put just under 60,000 miles on my Honda Passport. I bought it in November of 2000 (its a 2001). The only problems I have encountered were: 1. bent antenna because it always stays up-- even on windy days ($32.00 to replace) 2. needed new belts from off road abuse @ 52,000 miles ($342.00) Haven't had any other problems with the vehicle. The new belts were needed because I was straining them from off roading so much. This truck hits trails like nothing else, yet when it goes on the highway, it manages a rather smooth, quiet ride. I'm coming off of a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 that was a PIECE OF TRASH! Personally, I can't believe how well made the Passport is. Its very rugged and very sporty. Handles well, rides well, and is quiet. Power feels equivilent to the V8 in the Jeep. However, the Jeep would break down when you had fun with its engine but the Passport just keeps wanting to play play play. The Honda Passport is a very well made vehicle and every vehicle I own gets its limits tested. I will admit, I am very impressed with the Honda Passport and given the chance, I would most likely buy another. I reccommend this vehicle to anyone wanting a rugged, sport SUV that WILL last. I can vouch for that.

Strength:

Did a lease-to-buy on it and have found performance, styling, value and reliability to be the most noteworthy strengths.

Weakness:

My dealership has been hard to deal with

Lets start off by saying the Passport is a nice vehicle and I have not had problems with it, but I have had problems with the dealer. The dealer takes no responsibility a defective front nost mask (leather bra for the front) that ended up scratching the hell out of my paint and I had to get my hood repainted. it ended in a settlement because they were scared I would win the suit against them. Anyway about the Passport itself. I leased this 2000 EX-L 2 wheel drive model in March of 2000 and was $399/month. My lease has just ended two months ago and I bought-out the vehicle off of the lease because it was trouble-free. ended up costing me just over 27K between the lease payments and the buyout. I have put 51,000 miles on it, always garaged kept and meticulously cared for as I do for any car I have ever owned. I praise Honda for not ruining the simply, sexy design of the truck. Seems like every other vehicle with a Honda name is plain butt-ugly. I was drawn to the Passport because I originally wanted a Rodeo but the Honda dealer is significantly closer so the Passport was perfect. I also checked out a 4Runner which I found to be very uncomfortable, expensive and the engine on the 4Runner was pathetically underpowered for a 33K vehicle. I wanted a SUV with good go. Same story with the Nissan Pathfinder, I found it overpriced and underpowered. I looked at just about everything out there. The chevy blazer had an almost constipated rear end look to it and I couldn't find any other SUV out there that met my performance and value criteria. I find the Passport to be the absolute perfect compromise between value, styling and performance. I found it to handle exceptionally with the standard double wishbone suspension, rides decently, looks great and the passing power is effortless. I don't see anything on the market even today that is very appealing. SUVs seem to be bland and boring all of a sudden. The Honda Passport is an exceptional vehicle if you are looking for a "true suv" which now seem not to be very popular because the yuppies want a car in an SUV package. As one other reviewer here said that I completely agree with, If you want a carlike ride, carlike gas mileage, and the most carlike SUV out there, just buy a car for crying out loud.

Power, Made of PURE Steel, SAFE, Looks very good.

Weakness:

have never encountered a problem in over 72,000 miles.

I have owned this vehicle since it was brand new. It had 21 miles on it when it fell into my hands on my 15th birthday in 1999. This is one of the most powerful V6 sport utility vehicles on the market even today. Despite having 205hp it is plenty more powerful than the 270hp TrailBlazer. Besides for a couple of recalls, this vehicle is flawless! I see someone below has the same year as me yet has had some problems? Well she said she off roads with it so who knows the abuse she did to it off road. If you take care of your vehicles and do routine maintaince, this truck will last forever. This IS a truck, not on a car chasis. My main purpose of this post was not only to praise Honda for picking Isuzu to do buisness with, but to let everyone know how these hold up in real world accidents. I was rear ended at 45mph by a Mustang while I was stopped. I have the spare tire on the back door and he slammed into the spare tire, went under my truck about a foot, hit the tow hooks, exhaust, license plate and mud flap. I had a SMALL case of whiplash. I got out of the truck after it happened and all I saw was smoke. Luckily it was coming from the Mustang. His engine was totaled and everything from his bumper to the bottom of his windsheild was smashed in. His airbags went off and burned him pretty badly. One of the officers on the scene said to me "well I know what Im buying for my wife" referring to the Passport. At first glance, the passport had NO damage but then i looked under it and noticed scraped on my bumper, messed up exhaust and the rear trunk door doesnt open. I am still shocked how strong this vehicle is. It is being fixed now and I was told there is NO chasis or structural damage to it! The Mustang is more expensive to fix than to call a total. These types of accidents are what keep me happy knowing I'm driving an SUV built like a truck out of STEEL, not out of lightweight aluminum like the RX300 and all the others. The Passport may ride rough and get low gas mileage but it will provide you with safety thanks to the solid steel. You weigh the difference. I'll take my life over my wallet. If you want to SEE the damage or have any specific questions about this vehicle email me gopeddingnick@lycos.com I WILL reccommend this vehicle to anybody! I have 72,000 miles on it and baby the hell out of it. I am one person who will not follow the herd to buy a car-based POS SUV. I'm sticking with REAL SUVs built by a REAL truck company. Isuzu Trooper, Rodeo, Passport, etc... everything built on a REAL TRUCK PLATFORM is made out of steel. not monotubes or any of the cheap crap to save weight. VERY safe vehicle with excellent power and averages 17.2 miles per gallon.

Great looks, roomy, good off-road.

Weakness:

Electrical system, mysterious rattles.

The first 3 years, I loved my Passport. It is roomy, comfortable, handles well, gets advertized 20mpg, super for snow and rough roads. Even though the A/C has been repaired 4 times, I thought I had a great car. Then the troubles started. First the ABS modulator wouldn't shut off, so I had that replaced. Then the gas gauge quit registering. The mechanic replaced the sending unit, but Honda only sells the sending unit with the fuel pump, so I had to pay for both! Three times now I have had to be towed, as the fuel system was not delivering fuel to the engine. It is still in the shop, waiting for parts. I am driving a '74 Toyota Land Cruiser which seems to be much more reliable!! I am ashamed I talked my friends into buying a Passport. Honda should be ashamed for putting their name on this Izuzu. I thought this SUV would last forever.
