Strength:

Roomy interior, Nice CD system, Nice sunroof, Nice Leather interior. Not too big of an SUV.

Weakness:

Vibrations in the front end, rough riding just like a truck or jeep, transmission fluid leaking and jerking hard to get into "Drive" (automatic). Hesitates to take off once put into Drive and jerks hard a few times.

When we first saw the Passport, we knew that was what we wanted. I wish I had read the reviews here first. I guess I'm just a Lemon Magnet! We got rid of a VW Cabrio (never buy one of those) and a Nissan Maxima (great car until it hits about 75,000). Anyways, we have had this car less than a month, and transmission fluid is leaking from it. I think gas may be also leaking from it, and I've even seen a few drops of oil underneath it. The front end has a vibration and you definitely have to be careful when making turns. Wide turns are necessary for such a small SUV. I am taking it in for service Monday, so I will see how it goes. When I called Honda themselves, the service rep told me "I think you should purchase an extended warranty". I asked him if they sold them, and he said no, just get one from the dealer. It made me feel really insecure about the car and now this happens. It's a beautiful vehicle, everyone compliments it. Two tone paint, leather interior, very clean. I also did not know it was an Isuzu in Honda clothing or I probably would have passed. I will pay this car off as quickly as possible and sell it. I just don't think a car less than a month old should be leaking ANYTHING. It only has 40,000 miles on it. I should have went with my instinct and purchased a Hyundai Santa Fe which I have heard nothing but good things about. Oh, and I almost forgot the WORST problem so far, when car is put into drive, it jerks hard and acts as if it is not going to go, then it lurches forward and jerks hard a few more times. Ah, you live and learn, and you spend money to learn the hard lessons...

transmission has always been a little sketchy problems hard to diagnose (not like old school classics!) parts limited and expensive

Well, My experience with my Honda Passport has been bitter sweet. It rides well, looks nice, has sufficient power...BUT...the automatic transmission shifts ruff on occasion, the gas gauge no longer works, the ABS does not work (never got a recall notice either!!), and the air conditioning compresser locked up and put me our on the side of the road ($1200). I just recently have been having ignition problems. Sometimes it cranks, sometimes it doesnt. sometimes the starter kicks in, somtimes it doesnt. The solinoid clicks everytime. So i've narrowed it down to either a starter problem, or bad plugs (most likely the starter) if anyone has had any similar troubles with their honda, please email me with how you resolved it. and ill do my best to help you with yours!! ballaz_R_us@bellsouth.net

Strength:

Great 4 Wheel drive system. Descent Towing capacity (4500lbs). Gas mileage better than most of its direct competitors. Good power for merging and passing.

Weakness:

Within a month after I bought it, the alternator had stopped working and had it replaced with a rebuilt unit at a local Isuzu dealer. Factory battery was also dead and needed to be replaced. Annoying chatter from rear window (worst in the winter). My biggest problem has been the Check Engine Light that comes on anytime I accelerate hard or when merging onto the freeway. It even comes on when the cruise is set and has to accelerate going up gentle hills. I took in to the dealer for a diagnostic and they told me the codes where for the O2 sensor but there was nothing wrong with them. They reset them took my $75 and snet me on my way. Within 2 days it had come on again. Initially it would reset it self after a few miles now it won't so I have to reset it by removing the ECM fuse for 20 seconds with the engine off and reinstalling it. Because of this problem I won't take this vehicle on road trips anymore for fear of what might happen. Just recently it seems to be losing coolant not rapidly but enough to be off concern. I haven't seen dripping coolant under the vehicle yet. There is an annoying howl from the front passenger door sill when it is windy outside. Fuel gauge accuracy.

Overall it is a good vehicle. I bought the vehicle in September of 2000 with 49,000 miles. I was going to buy the Rodeo LS but I found this Passport for $1,000 less and figured since it is made buy Isuzu It's fine. It's towing capacity was one of the biggest sellers to me. It looks sharp as well. It is small enough to fit in my garage without worrying about losing mirrors or scratching the roof. Rides okay, not as comfortable as 4Runner, or the car based Highlander or Escape. There is no doubt it is built on a truck platform which makes just rugged enough all purpose use. Very smooth 4-wheel drive system (saved from a couple of potential wrecks in the snow). Gas mileage is impressive if you don't mind driving 55 to 60 mph, (22-24mpg).

V6 feels like a small V8 Styling Price Reliability

Weakness:

Limited aftermarket parts but there are some out there.

I have owned this vehicle since it was new and overall, could not be happier. First, think about the price advantage this vehicle has and the power it has to offer. The Passport is actually very luxurious. I was looking at a 99 SR-5 4runner but they were too much money and did not have much power. The Passport was also on my list of SUVs to drive and after I did, I knew it was what I'd end up with. There have been a couple of recalls which is somewhat annoying but they have been for really minor stuff like the headrest and the visors and the new one was about the ABS b/c they wanted to put in a more potent system. Sounds good to me. Honestly, I love my Passport and I would definitely buy it again if I had to go back from square one. If you are buying a new one, stay away from the 1998s. It was the first year of the redesign and the kinks werent worked out until late '99.

CAR FULLY LOADED WITH CD PLAYER, SUN ROOF AND LEATHER SEATS. LOVE THE LOOKS BUT ....

Weakness:

OIL, GAS, UNEXPLAINED THINGS GOING ON, AND I'M SURE MORE TO COME

I BOUGHT MY PASSPORT A FEW MONTHS AGO WITH A LITTLE OVER 36000 MILES ON IT. IT DRINKS OIL LIKE CRAZY. THE HONDA DEALERSHIP "CAN'T FIND ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT". I'VE TAKEN IT IN SEVERAL TIMES FOR THE OIL. A COUPLE WEEKS AGO IT WAS IN THE SHOP FOR TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKING. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED A 100 MILES BACK TO WHERE I LIVE. LUCKLY THE PART WAS COVERED UNDER HONDA WARRENTY BECAUSE I HAD NO WARRENTY ON THE CAR. NOW THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON AND WHEN I HAVE A FULL TANK OF GAS THE GAUGE WILL GO TO EMPTY AND MY GAS LIGHT WILL COME ON AND THEN GO BACK TO FULL AND SO ON. KEEP IN MIND I'VE HAD THE CAR FOR ONLY A FEW MONTHS AND I'M READY TO DRIVE IT INTO A TREE.

Good looking car no major problems yet interior is great been a good vehicle for me.

Weakness:

Gear shift problems alot of recalls rattle in back window. Its an Isuzu wolf in Honda sheep clothing.

let me start with I have loved my passport for the past 5 years. I have had no major problems with it till this month. I take it in for maintenance at Bell Honda,PHX AZ. Not the friendliest people you would meet or the most intelligent, but other than that no problem. Except lately, when putting the car in drive the gear shift says drive but the shift indicator on the dash says N or L. If I drive the vehicle it jerks and grinds when shifting gears. If I jimmy with the gear shift and turn the car on and off a couple times it works fine, but that is beside the point, it should work the first time. Of course when I take it to the dealership for service the respose I get is "we can't duplicate the problem". has anyone else had transmission or gear shift problems with a 1999 Honda Passport 2WD EX Automatic transmission? please if you have can you give me some details on what was done to correct this? thank you. oscar2buku@yahoo.com

Awesome power compare to 4Runner

Weakness:

Gas guzzler which all SUV's and I can't complain about it. Engine kinda loud in high rev.

So far my 2000 Honda Passport/Isuzu Rodeo has quite good for me. It ride nice, steering is no problem, clearance height is an ease, leather seats acceptable good quality. I heard so many bad things about it, but in my opinion a vehicle will last if take care of it and drive it like what is meant to be.

gas millage pulls to right and vibrates over 40 mph. I have believe from the begginning there was something wrong with the transmission but know ever seems to hear or feel what I do..

I have been driving my Passport for almost 2 yrs. now a lease for 5 yrs. the only way I could afford the payments. Have had some problems burned some oil about 30000 which ended up being supposed cap not on good to oil or in changing the oil, a few rattles not found and avalve and gasket replaced. I am now at 36,??? miles and the gear shift is not holding into place. It easily slips from park to reverse or even as far as neutral. Just the other night on my job (as I was on call) had to go to my place of employment, pulled up in front of office put suv into park and turned off steped one foot out and realized it was rolling backwards when the door hit me and I fell face down on ground only for the Passports' front drivers side to run over and up my right side!! Quite an experience, luckly I did not break any thing but baddly brusied and tore up my right leg and foot and hip will be offf work for several days. Has anyone experienced this gear shift jumping from park to reverse or neutral ever or any problems with this. Please let me know, I know I put car in gear and turned off and removed key , I know I was very lucky but what if it did this again to me or even a child or someone walking behind the car? Scarey.
