Very nice classy black SUV. Requires TLC when hand washing / waxing to keep looks up. Techno gadgets wow everyone. Bose system sounds great when you play a CD of jetsounds: SR71 taking off, streaking by overhead. Some people actually think it is a real jet and look outside! You have to turn down the volume, otherwise it sounds like the windows will crack...door panels shake. Lots of power compared to the V6 in my last SUV (97 Blazer 4WD). Great Onstar hands free cell phone, wish it was a satellite phone, as well. Very nice heated seats. Rear seat passengers say the ride back there is much better than in the 96 Blazer. Needs to come standard with mudflaps. Gets up and blows the doors off of just about everything but Vettes and Porsches. Haven''t had such fun in a black vehicle since my 65 GTO convertible. Wheels are much easier to clean by hand than the ones on my wife''s S80-T6 Volvo. We like the air compressor mounted in the rear compartment.
Weakness:
Rear hatch pull down strap replaced, power mirror control joystick replaced, 2WD - 4WD selector switch replaced (it was trying to go from 2WD-HI to 4WD-HI all by itself at 70mph!), barely made it home from dealership when new due to tranny or transfer case trying to be in two modes at once(had to be towed back to dealership the next morning and reprogrammed) - all this taken care of under warranty. Then today the motor just quit on me when driving at 55mph. "Service Brakes Soon" message came up on digital screen and ABS light came on. What does this have to do with the engine? I coasted to a wide spot, turned it off, checked under the hood, restarted it and everything "reset" and from there onwards to home it acted like the engine shut down had never happened. Will take it back to the dealer tomorrow to access the ECM and check for fault codes AGAIN. Now it is turning into a major safety issue. Anyone else having this sort of thing happening to them? I fear now that there is damage in the drivetrain that will not be taken care of later. Document everything! Has lifter noise or rod knock when cold and idling. Goes away when warmed up. What will be next? SUV of the year, OK - I sell big trucks and know there are glitches in all the new vehicles that are supposed to be taken care of under "policy" as well as warranty, however, with 11000+ miles on this Envoy, when will the glitches stop happening in mine? Rides very nice, great for road trips, side winds not a problem, extremely nice to get into and drive home when you have been out driving an 80,000 pound semi all day long. You get a lot of looks if you keep it all shined up, that''s for sure. As long as GMC Truck and the dealership take care of me and the glitches I will keep driving it. Helluva nice 4WD compared to what I bought in the 60s and 70s. Great Michelin tires, too. If it was a big truck with this many problems I would be asking the dealer for a way out, or a new truck to replace it. GMC Truck division, will you come through for me? Strength:
It is a good size but not too big for my family to drive. Plenty of power but the engine is quiet.
Weakness:
Gas tank is too small. The rear seat angle is somewhat uncomfortable....too far forward. Interior light switch, fog light switch, and dash light switches are not lighted and are difficult to find in the dark. I really like this vehicle, it came with everything that I wanted. It is fun to drive, works very well in snow and ice, and has plenty of power to pull my boat. GM thought of everything when packaging features into this vehicle. Gas mileage is exactly as advertised. Used to ride great. Love the inside!
Weakness:
Seems to be a lot of engine complaints on this site and I really don''t like the outside of the Envoy. The back end is pretty darn ugly. Well, I did love my Envoy for 5 months. The ride was awesome and everything seemed to be going great until my service engine soon light came on. At 8000 miles I need a new engine. I''m devastated. I had previously owned a 1999 Explorer Sport which I absolutely loved, however when Ford changed the body style of that car I did not like it and therefore started looking for something new. Hopefully the new engine will take care of everything. Quite frankly I prefer to have a new engine as opposed to them attempting to fix my existing one which seems to have multiple problems ranging from bad spark plugs to cylinder issues. I will rate this vehicle with the hopes that my problems are fixed. Similar Products Used: Explorers. |

Strength:
Great power, excellent ride, real attention getter
Weakness:
Driver''s left leg does not receive heat when floor outlets are selected. Front seats must be moved forward to fold the rear seats. We picked up our Envoy in late May, 2001. I break in new vehicles carefully. An oil change at 360 miles proved to be 1.5 quarts low, not leaking and not burning it. Computer software problem drove all gages to read at half of actual value. Moderate to severe engine vibration at 1600-1650 rpm. Wind whistles at both front doors. Rear wiper failed to operate on two occasions. Auto door locks engage when put in gear...if driver exits with engine running, eleven instances of driver''s door locking (passenger side ok). Moderate shudder through steering system when pulling in or out of parking spaces (nine occurrences). No long trips due to lack of confidence in engine. Dealer checked engine and exhaust system VERY thoroughly, but could not cure vibration problem. Dealer could not find/duplicate wind whistle, steering shudder or rear wiper problem. Smelled burning electrical insulation twice and door lock problem and rear wiper problem went away. Change oil light came on 16 miles after oil change. It looks great...so great that we bought it in first production year; bad mistake. Similar Products Used: Blazer |

Engine Power, 270 horsepower has pickup and power. Excellent handling. Smooth Ride with bilsteen shocks and Michelin tires. Quiet interior with wonderful Bose Stereo.
Weakness:
16 mph and a 18 gallon tank. The tank should be 22-25 so I can get a whole workweek on one tank. I now have 8,000 miles on this Envoy. I feel that this was the best money I have ever spent. The SUV has power, comfort, handling and quiet interior. I drive 60 miles a day to and from work with half highway and half back-roads. The steering is very responsive and it is very quiet inside. I usually drive around 70 mph on highway and 40-50 on the back roads. The leather seating is very comfortable and all the displays are clear and in the right place. This SUV is a pleasure to drive. Strength:
Power-you think that your are driving a V8, very quiet, looks, Bose Sound system, handling
Weakness:
Gas tank too small, only 18 US gal. Range is to short. Leather seats have no side bolsters. This is my first American car. This Truck Rocks! I bought the 4WD SLT with all of the gadgets and gizmos in November 2002. I love the power, the comfort, quiet ride, the approving looks I receive driving down the road. This is a good "chick magnet." I enjoy the shear exhileration of blowing the doors off of all the snooty Japanese and German import SUV''s and watching the bewildered looks in the drivers'' eyes. It feels solid through and through and very safe. In all wheel drive mode you can gun the pedal even on wet pavement without slippage, than slam on the brakes without "skiddage." I feel like I own the road. I only had one problem with the car. The premium Bose sound system kept cutting out only when the outside temp was cold. It turned out to be a faulty Bose amplifier. It took a week to find the part. I have not experienced any other problems. I read about all of the recalls and problems others have had. I guess by the time I bought it, all of the problems others have complained about were fixed. Perhaps it was just built on a Wednesday. Good Car-ma? I actually am convinced that Americans can build a quality automobile and this Envoy is proof. Styling, ride, handling, comfort, features.
Weakness:
Dumb things that shouldn''t go wrong have gone wrong: dead driver''s seat (wires came unplugged), bad battery at 8,000 miles, rear doors that rattle though they''ve allegedly been adjusted by three dealers. My second review of the Envoy at 9,600 miles (my first was after I''d just gotten the car) has me concluding that GMC may have jumped the gun on this one, though the Envoy has great promise. I still find myself marveling at how much I enjoy driving this car, and nothing major has gone wrong, just irritating small things. Perhaps GM should demonstrate some restraint and release vehicles for mass production only after the vehicles are truly ready. Mine shows some evidence of less than top quality control. Bad Gas Mileage, Well I guess everything accept the above strengths! Alot of Bugs in this One! I keep reminding my self not to Buy First Year Models! I dont know why I listened to my wife? Oh! I remember she said it was pretty! I don''t recommend this vehicle to anyone. Something is constantly going Wrong! 3 or 4 recalls! I purchased this vehicle in March of 2001 it spent approx. 2 months since in down time for repairs. I hated every moment driving this vehicle I never felt safe after they had recalled it to have the lower control arms replaced and realigned. Finally it all came to an end on January 13th 2002 My wife and I were coming home from dinner (NO Drinking Either) in a pretty bad Snowstorm with near whiteout conditions. I had slowed to a crawl, the snow soon let up (probably one of those Lake effect bands). The road looked clear so I started to resume back to speed, I was doing approx. 45-50 when I hit a patch of Black Ice, I hit the brakes nothing happened I went off the right shoulder traveling down a culvert and finally hitting a Stone Retaining Wall Head On! The vechicle bounced back and came to rest on the passenger side we could not get out! My Sternum was broke and both my wife and myself were badly banged up! The Airbags did NOT Deploy! And of Course NO ONSTAR! We were wearing our seat belts though which probably saved our life!Hurt As we were it was very difficult to reach the onstar button but somehow managed. The center Console latch was one of the earlier recalls and was replaced prior to this accident under recall because it was coming open during accidents. Guess What? It came opened even after being recalled we were hit by flying debris tools etc. so much for the engineers fix! Help did arrive and we were pulled from the wreck and taken to the hospital.I''m glad this nightmare is over.We are both OK and recovering. Neither of us care to drive this vehicle ever again even if it was free! Similar Products Used: Jeep, Ford Explorer 2002, |

Strength:
The inline-6, with electronic throttle control is strong. The dash is classy and the instrumentation panel is stylish. The Bose 6 speaker, 275-watt sound system is outstanding.
Weakness:
The only thing I would change, would be a larger gas tank. I went from a 22 gallon tank to an 18 gallon. The GMC Envoy is the most impressive vehicle I have ever owned. The smooth ride, the tight turning radius, and the sharp look, had me sold, on the test drive. When I park, and exit the Envoy, people stop me, and comment on how great it looks. I look forward to going somewhere, just to get in and drive it around. My children love the attention it attracks. You have security in driving, for families, due to the OnStar Communications System, and the (choice) remote locking and unlocking of doors. Similar Products Used: This is my first GMC vehicle. I owned a ''92 Ford 150 XLT Truck, and traded it in for a ''95 Dodge Ram SLT Truck. I did not know what a smooth ride was until I bought the GMC Envoy. |

Strength:
HID headlights, Bose stereo, heated seats with memory, cargo room.
Weakness:
Horrible gas mileage, typical GM fit and finish sloppiness, breakage-prone gizmos, tiny wheels, low quality materials and workmanship. This thing is a great SUV...when it''s working. The luxury gadgets are excellent, but they just keep on breaking--the air compressor, the rear cargo compartment cover and the rear wiper have all died. The wheels (whose center logo stickers fell off) are way too small for the wheel openings, especially for a vehicle of this size and weight. Speaking of wheels, the wheel bearings are prone to failure...my truck drones on worse than my mother-in-law.
