5.0 V8. Cargo room and comfortable seating. Great handling with AWD. Looks good Stereo after being repaired. Heated seats. Onboard computer. Heated mirrors. A/C front and back.
Weakness:
Electrical syetem. Brakes Gas Mileage(however 535kms a tank is not bad). I recently had a opportunity to purchase this vehicle for $16,000, it has approximately 47000 kms. Needless to say I bought it and intended to flip it for a profit, however after driving it, I had to keep it. This vehicle has all the toys including AWD and the 5.0 V8, leather, moonroof, onboard computer. It has lots of power and the vehicle handles well. I did notice and had to repair some components of the electrical system including the premium sound system. I had to have it rewired due to unexplained power surges. (The LED would not display on stereo). The other noted electircal problem came from inside the steering wheel. I was told that this was a common problem for ford. So the question is, if the vehicle catches on fire while in operation, I guess the law suit against ford would be termendous, especially if injury would occur. This vehicle has been babied. The only other troubling concern was with some rust staring to form on the end of the hatch, and on the passenger rear door. It is very minor in nature however again FORD indicates that this is also an ongoing problem. Was this repaired properly, NO, ford states that this is caused by environmental factors. Again I cannot complain for the price I paid. This vehicle is absolutley stunning. I would purchase another Explorer especially after having the pleasure of driving this one. The only problem now, getting it away from my wife. |

Very quick, very good looking and very sure-footed. Redesign of most systems for 2001 made this a brand new truck.
Weakness:
Leather seat cushions not designed properly for the long haul. Gas tank at 17.5 Gal. is too small. A host of interior and exterior refinements coupled with a German designed SOHC V6, new transmission and new brakes makes this SUV a winner. The ride is better than some cars. More bang for the buck than any other SUV similarly equipped. Similar Products Used: ''91 Mazda Navajo, ''94 Mazda Navajo |

Strength:
Handling, 3rd row seat, styling, comfort, good financing.
Weakness:
RELIABILITY, stiff suspension, poor gas mileage. I regret purchasing this vehicle due to reliability issues. I told myself I''d never buy a Ford again due to poor reliability and terrible sevice in the past. I decided to take a chance, and was lured by the 0% interest for 36 mo. financing and 3rd row seating. The drivers side door locks failed after the first month and the transmission is leaking fluid. The door lock was repaired, but dealership was reluctant to offer a loaner car during the repairs until I complained to the Customer Service Manager. They claim the transmission was overfilled during manufacturing and should stop leaking on its own. I can''t understand why American manufacturers can''t improve reliability. I should have purchased a Honda Odyssey minivan instead. Similar Products Used: Honda and Toyota products. No problems after 100,000+ miles. |

check engine light when nothing is wrong, so you can never tell if anything is really wrong or is it the check engine light acting up again? Low range doesn''t work, whell bearings went, u joints went, emergency brakes went, brake clips went, exhaust from the converter all the way back went, "banging" in the engine, inside door around the handle material is coming apart from the door, driver door doesnt always close all the way, you ave to slam it do get it closed This truck has been nothing but problems. I don tthink I would buy an explorer again. Keep in mind though that I don''t know how the previous owner treated the truck, but it seems like i am always fixing something Similar Products Used: none |

Anyone over the age of 35 and has owned American trucks can attest to the in improvement of fit and finish on new Fords over the ones in the early 80''s.
Weakness:
What can you say? It rides like a truck, handles like a truck, it even flips over like a high Cg vehicle. Eveyone in previous reviews needs to realize this thing is a truck not a car, ah yeah, it rides like crap. The reason for the low value rating is because they charge way too much for this thing. 2wd, v-8 Motor fully loaded leather, sun roof. Lots of power. What can I say its a tall compact truck. I basically bought it to haul my windsurfing gear around to the beach. Rented the v-6 once to go to tahoe and loved it, the 6 was lacking in power on the hills with 4 passengers. Still loved the fit and finish the best of the domestics. Looked at Dodge, what a cheap, poorly assembled piece of crap. What can you say about the Explorer. Toyota levels of reliability. Blows any other truck off the road and impressive fit and finish. A good SUV for the City. I hardly get vibed from tree huggers at all. 4X4 system Not a bad truck. My friend had it with minimal problems. I traded it in because the gear box went out. I would never buy an american 4X4 with over 40K miles. I feel this vechile was a much better choice than any GM product. The dealer gave me $3500 for a trade, so I was happy to take a small loss and not fix anything. 4.0 V-6 has great power after you add a K&N and a flowmaster. Climbs over anything
Weakness:
Transmission This Explorer is a lot of fun. I have enjoyed it. The only problem encountered has been the transmission. The solinoids are going bad and will have to be rebuilt. The symptoms are slipping between 2-3 gear. Overall the 4.0 has been a great engine. If it had 4 doors i would keep it forever Similar Products Used: Chevy Blazer |
