Strength:
Well Priced, and nicely loaded. It's very pleasing to the eye and does drive like a lazy boy sofa with wheels. Good cargo room and easy enough to work on.
Weakness:
QUALITY...........CHECK IT OUT WELL! The first one I looked at had several paint and finishing problems from FORD! The 2nd one I picked looked good, but the night had fallen by this time! (4 hours to purchase, we closed the dealership) Next morning we found a defect with the rug in the rear which we taken car off. Two weeks later we found two spot weld holes on the roof!!!!!! The car is now at the Dealer's body shop with that repair!! Water also leaks into front windows moldings under heavy rains or car washes!! ********* Also FORD does not cover loaner cars, even when the problem came new with the car!!!! Should have purchased that Trail Blazer. This SUV looks nice, and rides well. But Ford saying "Quality is Job 1" is far from true! Never made the mistake of buying any car at night, even a new one! The Price is much better then it's rivals, and it serves it's purpose well. But make sure to check it out very carfully!!!!! Similar Products Used: I replaced my 4dr Jeep with this 4dr Ford. I found a better ride and comfort in this car, but Quality not really that great. Chevy may have been a better choice. |

Plenty of power from V-8. Seats 5 fairly comfortably. Plenty of cargo space. Gas mileage is not bad for an SUV.
Weakness:
None significant. Great vehicle! The V-8 is definitely worth the extra cash. Similar Products Used: 1986 Ford Bronco II 1989 Ford Bronco II |

Sport 2WD
Strength:
It is very roomy, engine seems strong so far. Good visibility, comfortable seats, a good cab for tall people. I believe it to be safe as long as you drive it safely, that is, it isn't a sports car and shouldn't be driven like one.
Weakness:
The center of gravity is definitely too high which makes the handling awkward, especially at speeds greater than 70mph. The ride is rougher and choppier than I feel it should be, which is based on my experience with other SUVs. It is rather noisy. It vibrates a bit at highway speeds, no one seems to be able to fix this. The rear window weatherstripping fell off. I feel there are some dumb design flaws: the location of the power door locks allows anyone to easily break into the vehicle if you leave your windows open even a crack, there is no way (that I can figure out) to keep the interior lights from going on (if so desired)when you open the door, the cup holder was designed for the auto-transmission so if you have a 5-speed like mine you will knock your drink over in 2nd & 4th gears, the interior sunroof panel barely hangs on, there is no way to completely close the vent (even with everything closed and the fan off air will come through while driving, and finally the TRANSMISSION RUBBER PLUG FIASCO!! If you buy a 90's Explorer with a manual transmission the FIRST THING you should do is replace these 3 plugs with metal freeze plugs. These five dollar parts can save you the $ I bought this truck a year and a half ago at 112,000 miles and have since put on 20,000. I haven't had any engine problems that I feel are abnormal for this mileage (replaced water pump, valve cover gasket, muffler.) The 4.0 engine has plenty of power (but I haven't yet had an opportunity to tow a trailer)and acceptable, but not great, gas mileage. I feel that I got a good deal on this vehicle, but am not sure if would recommend it to anyone unless they could get a good price on one with low to moderate miles in good condition. Overall, I like it and enjoy driving it, but don't think I'll buy another when the time comes. After taking it on a two-week cross-country camping trip and a two-week camping trip in Mexico, I have come to the conclusion that Ford designed this vehicle for smooth roads and soccer moms, not simple dirt or gravel roads that it (as a 2WD) should have no problems with. It picked up numerous sqeaks and rattles, and the passenger side power window quit working, as a result of driving on bumpy roads at 15-30 mph. Weakness:
back seat very stiff, seat belt in back bench can crack your splean, no fold away third seat, loud road noise, rear view mirror is really low. I leased my 2001 Ford explorer 4 door sport from the best dealership, Manhattan Ford. They are a ford direct dealer, no middle man. They also have mercury, lincoln, mazda, rover, jaguar and aston martin. You''ll feel like a celebrity in their gorgeous and tremendous indoor showroom and youll get a better price. Regardless, I leased my truck after returning a previous 98 sport 2 door.It was horrible.98 was the first year for the sohc 6 cyl.. My truck went back 30 months later via flatbed with a blown engine. After weighing my options I ended up with my 4 door sport. Smoother ride and accelaration. I got a better deal because it was the last year of the older shape. I love my truck! Im probably gonna buy it. Similar Products Used: 1998 ford explorer sport 2 door |

Transmission, Transmission, Transmission Bought this car 1 year used. I am not surprised to see all the comments about transmissions since we have gone through 3 of them in 100000 miles. Fortunately all were replaced under an extended warranty. It also seems to go through brake discs at an unusually high rate. Twice in the same number of miles. Maybe they have all these issues worked out on the 2002 but it doesn''t look like it. Would NOT buy another used Explorer. |

If you like boats on the waves then this is YOUR vehicle(needs stiffer susp.), V-6 not enough must have V-8 First off it wouldn''t matter if this vehicle was a peice of crap(which it isn''t by the way) we would still buy it if Carl (Our God send Dealer)said it was worth it. Dave White Ford is the best that we''ve ever came upon!!! Now for the Explorer the IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) is nice but did it really need it? I vote no. We live near the open country with open country roads were car suspensions on SUV''s don''t work together. We are currently tracking down aftermarket springs to stiffen up the ride. The V-6 is nice but under powered considering we traded a brand new Ford F-250 Superduty with Powerstroke Desiel for it. So lets recap get the V-8 and find stiffer springs and shocks. Thats it, and you''ll have one heck of a ride. Similar Products Used: Ford: 92 Explorer, 86 F-150, 98 Expedition, 98 Ranger 4x4, 01 F-250 4x4, 2002 Ranger(Freakin Fun)FX4 Chevy: heck no!!! |

Ford Explorer
Taken from CAR magazine, January, 2002: "Ford Explorer is a thoroughly nasty offering introduced from the States with scant regard to any indigenous automotive tastes. Shoddy construction, bloated looks, huge thirst and a worryingly imprecise driving experience should put off all but the supremely tasteless. SPEC NOTES: Big depreciation and expensive to run. Hard to insure, too. RIVALS: T-rex, Brontosaurus. BUT ALSO TRY: Any other SUV. |

Weakness:
Fuel economy. Having to apply handbrake to select low ratio 4wd. Borrowed vehicle to compare with other similar marques with a view to using as a multi-role vehicle in local ambulance service. Found the independent suspension front and rear gave superb tarseal/ gravel road handling. Offroad found the suspension travel adequate but the suspension very "bouncy", must state though that the vehicle had no weight loaded but the driver, and I suspect the tyres fitted may have contributed to the bounce. To accommodate steep entry and exit angles in such a large vehicle Ford have designed it with a long wheel base - but this means the vehicle will "ground" very easily mid chassis. Underneath had reasonable protective skid pans though. Having to fully stop and apply the handbrake to shift to low ratio 4wd was a real pain when travelling from the likes of gravel road to a steep slippery hill. But have to admit that even with dual role tyres the vehicle is a very capable and easy to control offroader. The 4 litre SOHC SEFI V6 motor has grunt to spare and is quiet and very responsive.Fuel consumption is fairly high, but taking into account the weight and drivetrain and size of the engine is not too bad.(petrol is over $1.00 a litre here)The brakes are awesome as well - the electronic force distribution system fitted works in all transmission modes.
