none We bought this Explorer new. My wife deove it for 150,000 miles with no problems what so ever. The five speed manual trans. was re-built at 180,000 miles. I now use it for daily commute to work (80 miles round trip). It now has 257,000 miles on it and I will not give it up I use it for everything work, backpacking, rock climbing and it takes me anywhere I want to go. Best 19,000 I ever spent. When the time comes (as I am sure it is) I will replace the engine and transmission and keep it. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
I have 59,000 miles on this vehicle and have no problems I can think of after the tire hassle with the Firestones.
Weakness:
Body roll on curvy roads and rough off-road terain nearly makes me car-sick. Good soild vehicle. Lots of power with the 5.0 L V8 and 3.77 gears that come with the towing package. This vehicle tows better than my old 94 Suburban with a 5.7 L. Stock 4 ply tires are weak off-road, but replaced with Michellin 6 plys. Gas mileage averages 17 mpg with mostly highway driving. Similar Products Used: Had an identical 97 with no problems to speak of for 90,000 miles. Also 94 Suburban that rode better and had more room, but not a tow vehicle (no towing package). Drove the BMW 3 L, gutless rough ride |

Ford has no strengths!! Expensive replacement parts. The only strength is that you can find alot in the junkyards
Weakness:
Poor transmissions Weak motors Ford would rather sell you a whole assembly of $500 instead of a $30 part, they would simply make the $30 part unavailable unless you purchase the whole assembly. Fords have numerous transmissions problems that none of your reviews seem to mention. This should be a key factor when determine what kind of vehicle to purchase Similar Products Used: GM products by far can out perform any ford product that is on the market. |

5.0 motor, quality, dependability, AWD
Weakness:
Lack of After Market Performance Parts, soft stock suspension, tiny tires We have the 5.0L AWD XLT. I lifted it 2 inches, stiffened up the suspension, and got rid of the tiny tires. Handles much better, and looks great. Overall, the quality of the vehicle beats the Chevy hands down. Would not consider another SUV, unless the Expedition. Handling too cushy. Short backseat is very uncomfortable. 3 year 0% interest makes this car worth getting otherwise I''d wait for the new CRV from Honda. A very average car. Similar Products Used: other SUV''s |

Ford Explorer XLT
Strength:
Visability is very good. I feel safer in the this vehicle, then a small car.
Weakness:
Steering too sensitive on the freeway. This is the first SUV I have owned, so it handled much different then the Probe that I had owned previously. When we first bought the vehicle, we had trouble with the check engine light, but after taking to another dealer they fixed the problem. We haven''t had any major problems with the engine or transmission. Similar Products Used: NONE |

Storage space in rear. Visibility
Weakness:
Replaced the engine twice, 1st at 5K and second at 80K miles. I''ve gone thru three transmissions. Poor gas mileage and no power when accelerating. I''ve had it with Fords. I loved the ride, handling, and looks right off the spot. It included all the extras that were available. Similar Products Used: Pathfinder, Jeep, and Toyota Highlander (love the Highlander) |

Strength:
Tight handling, good gas mileage (no joke), lots of storage space, very comfortable seats. Acts like a four wheel drive even though its only two! I''ve never got stuck on muddy excuse for a hillbilly road.
Weakness:
Slow braking, frequent brake jobs, lots of front end alignments. Could this be due to my wild, red light flashing driving? I am very pleased with my old Explorer. It''s been very good to me. I have never experienced a breakdown or been left stranded. My truck gets preventive maintenance and lots of pampering. I like the tight steering and responsive controls. As a busy volunteer firefighter and paramedic, I have to depend on this truck to get me safely through the Ozark Mountain''s curvey roads. Unlike a lot of people I have received excellent service from Ford, especially at Hudspeth Ford in Harrison. I highly recomend this model SUV. Similar Products Used: GMC Suburban--Good truck, smooth ride on rough dirt roads. It was a real gas guzzler and far too big for these small highways and trails. |
