Strength:
Great engine, well designed interior, and all-wheel-drive to keep us on the road when those tough Dakota storms roll across the prairies.
Weakness:
Stiff and bouncy suspension common to SUVs. This Explorer is equipped with the 5.0 liter V-8 and all-wheel-drive. A great "traction machine". Previously, we always drove Suburu products but when we moved to a higher elevation, we needed more ground clearance due to deeper snow. The engine has plenty of horsepower and the transmission is smooth. At speeds higher than 70mph it feels less-than-ideal so we set it for 69 mph for long trips. Gas milage averages 20mpg at this speed. Similar Products Used: Ford Econoline 150 Van and Mercury Grande Marquis. I like Fords! |

Strength:
-Smooth ride for an early model SUV -Gas mileage -Classic appearance -Surprising "Umph" for a V6 with 160 Horsies
Weakness:
-other people's comments on Consumer CarReview -An 1/8 inch pink strip around the body of the car Bought it from my grandpa with 36,000 miles in July '02. It looked like it just came off the dealer lot. The only thing i had to do was replace the radius arm brushings to rid of a creaking sound. Keep it well maintenance/cared for, and you shouldnt have any probs. Similar Products Used: '94 Ranger '98 Expedition |

Explorer Sport
Strength:
Comfort, strong V6 performance, low drive fatigue. I wish I had leather seats.
Weakness:
Brakes. I'm on my second set and I think the third is right around the corner. I've owned this 98 Explorer Sport since it was new. I have almost 90,000 miles on it and I would hesitate to say it's the best vehicle I've ever owned. Despite the numerous recalls (hood latch, computer chip, timing chain idler and tires), I still feel it drives like new. The only problems that I have I experience were the rear windshiled wiper motor gear breaking and the dash board lights/stearing wheel lights burning out and the air conditioner condensor. I drive my vrehicles hard and the Explorer Sport has stood up to it very well. I'm looking forward to this being my first 200,000 mile vehicle. Strength:
The looks of it. All the features. The power.
Weakness:
The crappy quality...Engines don't meet with that of The Jeep Grand Cherokee. All the problems that go on with them. I don't own an Explorer but i was going to buy one untill i actually drove a couple of them. I was looking to buy my first Suv and i liked the explorer alot but.... I went to look at a 98 Explorer Xlt with 46,000 miles and i started it up and it started making a weird noise and then began to squeel! So that one was out. Then I went to look at a 96 Explorer sport with 67,000 miles and it ran great but the Rpm gauge stopped working and would have been $200 to fix....That was out. Finally I looked at a 99 Explorer Eddie Baurer with 56,000 miles and man was it awsome! It had every available option but the price was way way to high. Similar Products Used: Instead of buying an Explorer I bought a 97 Jeep Cherokee Country 4WD Fully Loaded and with only 34,000 pampered miles! And for only $10,200! I love it...Go with Jeep! |

There seem to be a problem in the vehicle on pulling to the right and hydroplanning on a dry road. If I go over 65mph the truck starts to pull to the right and sort of fishtale back and forth. I will be taking the truck in for the second inspection. If anyone else has this problem e-mail me. Similar Products Used: I own a 96 ford explorer and I never had any problems. I am very disappointed in this 2002 explorer sport. |

Strength:
Agressive styling, great ride and reasonably priced.
Weakness:
None so far Just bought my new explorer XLS and love it. Actually it is for my wife but owning a 2001 Miata I like the change in height once in a while. We traded our 99 Eddie Bauer Expedition because our kids are grown and the Expedition was to much truck for just two people and we were worried about the down size. So far we are very pleased with the Explorers bigger design and IRS. The XLS with the sport package is very well equiped and looks good with the step bars and body trim. Hope we get the same quality out of this SUV as we have our other Ford products. Similar Products Used: 99 Expedition |

Not a reliable truck, will never buy another Ford in my life. Nothing but problems. It is a nice looking suv, but we had numerous problems. Tires, over heating, not starting up once in a while, rear wiper breaks down a lot, gas guzzler, unfriedly dealers, been to 4 all the same. Similar Products Used: 1997 explorer xlt |

Weakness:
in town mileage low cruise control is kind of hyperactive We picked up our 2002 Limited two months ago the wife loves it she wanted to be up off the road as she was driving an escort We took the truck up through the Ozark mountains fully loaded with a reciever rack and it handled like a dream the 4.0L had plenty of power for the mountain roads and the IRS handled the grades and curves with ease we had 4 adults 2 teens and an infant in a carseat for most of the trips with no big complaints the transmission is sweet the seats ride very comfortable even on a 12 hour trip the Mach stereo with the 6 in dash cd sounds great with good controls We are very happy with it so far Put a K&N filter in her and Mobile 1 oil and look forward to long life out of it Similar Products Used: 1995 F-150 2000 F-250 1992 Escort |

Strength:
Solid V8 Engine with great suspension. Very agile on tight corners Awesome turning radius
Weakness:
Gas guzzler This is a probably the best moderately-priced, mid-size SUV. The new 3rd seat option and independant rear suspension sets this apart from the similarly priced products. I drive a mountain road (4 miles) every day and have never regretted this truck. It always corners well and has pleny of power to spare (V8). This unit drives more like a truck, which is nice if you like the bigger feel. Ford has done an excellent job at mechanical and electrical engineering. This is a totally different vehicle than the pre-2002 model. Similar Products Used: Older Explorer |

Strength:
Passenger friendly interior Innovative Styling Optional 4.0 V6 SOHC engine excellent performance A classy truck
Weakness:
Various minor recalls (Secondary hood latch, rear wiper motor, speed control wire) I've had my Explorer Sport for nearly three years and I'm completely content with it. Many who criticize this light SUV tend to forget exactly the genre of truck it is. If a more roomy interior, smoother ride, and a limited amount of road noise sit first among your priorities for a prospective SUV, then maybe a four-door would be more accomodating. When I consider the styling, performance, and durabillity that my sport has rewarded me with, I can't help but be satisfied (120K and still running strong).
