QUALITY!!!!!!not able to talk to some one in authority(regional ford rep.)

If I had to do it all over again ,I would under no circumstances would I buy this product again. Problems( all were fixed by dealer-thank goodness I brought the extended warranty)vibration underneath floor board, rear wiper replaced twice, thermostat, compressor replaced, diode in alternator, abs sensor-twice replaced, and much more!!!! The worst thing about all of this is I only have 46000 miles on the car.Plus, trying to talk to a regional rep. impossible. If thinking of buying one, think twice. I'm just scratching the surface of the poor quality of this vehicle.

MANY, MANY recalls. Breakdowns, it's been in the shop more than on the road!

Well, anyone asking me about my exporer I tell them not to bother. Seven days into owning this fine Ford product the altinator went. It never got any better. I've replaced the transmission at 90000km. I'm not impressed.

A word to the wise,no matter how cheap they sell you this explorer for it's too much.We had our suv for 2 days when the transmission failed. The dealer has now had the vehicle for 2 weeks and still hasn't given us an answer as to when it will be returned. So I would suggest you look around before you even consider Ford.

Strength:

Lots of room for gear and good to drive in bad weather. Rugged vehicle that can handle off road trips.

Weakness:

Brakes and transmission. Also radius arm bushings wear out and need replacement periodically.

Purchased XLT used w/ 27K miles in excellent condition still w/ dealer warranty. Fully loaded w/ leather & 4wd. Really enjoyed this Explorer, used 4wd, works well in dry and wet conditions. Maintenance done regularly. Had A/C problems at about 40K and used extended warranty to replace compressor and condensor. Recharged system once after that. The transmission at 99K started delayed shifting while cold and progressively got worse. Had re-built done and things worked fine. I now have 126K and have trans problems again.

Weakness:

Bumpy ride, but expected this from an SUV. Motor is a bit loud especially when first starting.

I talked my husband into getting this Ford over the Chevy Blazer. The motor is a bit loud and it does have some road noise but, I think that is due to the bigger tires that is on it because there is no wind noise just the humming from the tires. We test drove another one just like it but had different tires and this one road much smoother and I didnt notice the humming from the tires. I like how it sets up in the air and isnt lower to the ground. The gas mileage is better than what was expected at 19 mpg. Has plenty of power for a 6 cylinder and the interior is very comfortable. My husband is 6'2 and doesnt have quite enough room to stretch out but he doesnt find too many that he can. I called the lady that bought this vehicle new and she said she has never had any problems what so ever with it. She had the oil changed every 5,000 miles and took very good care of it and said the only reason she traded it off was to get one of the new Ford Escapes. So far we are very happy with this SUV.

Reliable Lots of cargo room

Weakness:

None

So far the car drives like a dream. I previously owned a 1993 XLT Explorer and had very few problems. With 154,000 on the 1993, I replaced fuel pump and right front ball joint. Other then the few minor fixes, the 1993 Explorer was a very good purchase.

Strength:

Nice interior.

Weakness:

Horrible craftsmanship..horrible transmissions, weak engines compared to GM products.

I hope someone reads this before buying an Explorer. Needless to say I'm not going to buy anymore Ford products. The transmissions used are a very old European part and the 4.0 liter engine is only a stroked out 3.0 liter engine. I found this out 3 years after buying this pos. The transmission went out completely and cost $2300 to rebuild with only 92000 miles on it. Due to a bad torque converter, the entire system fell apart.

Strength:

acceleration(V8), ride, room, features, safety, reliability, and build quality

Weakness:

Price is leaning a bit over to the overpirced catergory, gas mileage isn't great but isn't horrible either (16-17mpg city/suburban driving is what I get)

The new 2002 Ford Explorer is truely something to consider. Ford's redesigned SUV has stylish looks, typical reliable Ford quality, and has a long list of safety and standard features. Passenger and cargo room is generous and V8 acceleration, quietness, and ride is exceptional. The new Explorer features a 3rd row seat as an option. Useful, but kid-size. I got all of the options on my Explorer, which brought it up to the MSRP's of more refined and luxury SUVs like the MDX, Discovery, and RX300. I really like my Explorer and I think you would too.

Model Reviewed: Explorer XLT V8

Strength:

To me it feels pretty comfortable and I definately like the space, but that's about it.

Weakness:

Everything else. Quality Control at Ford must have been eliminated !!!! Of course gas mileage sucks, but I shouldn't expect too much. Also, since I have a V8, it requires Premium Gas, or the valves will start to rattle. So that's an extra expense.

I have had this Explorer (2000) and my previous one (1998 XLT) for a little over 2 years and had nothing but problems with them. I must say, I also bought a new one in '95 and never had one problem with it in the three years I had it (except toward the end I needed new brakes w/about 65000 miles). But with my last two it's been a nightmare. My '98 had a major windshield leak from the first day on. My 2000 had a leak in one of the cargo area windows. Both had to get the rear window wiper motor replaced, after about 6 mo. to 1 year. The dealer told me the last time, that that is common, they have a bunch of those every week (I suppose that means I shouldn't be surprised, not to mention mad) eventhough it causes a major inconvinience to me. On my '98 it was mostly small stuff, but that adds up to a major pain, because I still have to drive 35 minutes one way to the dealer and waste time over there. Also on my 2000 the gas tank sensor went bad and I ran out of gas twice, eventhough it showed 1/4 tank left. Now that they installed a new one, I can't fill as much in the tank without topping it off with several more gal. once the autom. shutoff turns off. A few weeks ago I had to get a IAC valve replaced because it kept stalling. I also have a rattle under the hood that they claim they can't hear, eventhough it is very distinct. The service manager also asked ME if I thought the two problems had something to do with each other. "How the HELL" should I know. Harpeth Ford is the worst dealership I've ever dealt with, Barry Alexander (owner) doesn't give a damn about customer dissatisfaction, and doesn't respond to complaint letters that he gets from consumers and I also filed a complaint with Ford about them but it seems that Ford doesn't seem too concerned about the lack of service that Harpeth provides. I know one thing for sure, I will never buy another Ford and if anyone in the Nashville, TN area reads this - DON'T BUY A CAR AT ANY ALEXANDER OWNED DEALERSHIP. They are full of sh.. in every respect.
