Strength:

roominess, it used to have pick up and go!

Weakness:

rear windshield wiper failed! HA noises, goes through brakes frequently

I bought this car new. I was very happy with the ride for the first 2 years. It makes horrible noises. I have paid untolds amount of money, and spent untold amounts of time to fix this car. The latest problem: THE FOUR-WHEELE DRIVE LIGHT IS FLASHINGS. IT'S NOT IN FOUR-WHEELE DRIVE! Yep, the four wheele engages when I put it in either high or low gear, but the light won't stop flashing. AND ON TOP OF THIS IT FEELS LIKE IT IS AFFECTING THE TRANSMISSION! So, what does the dealership say.. besides, "We won't know until we take a look". LIKE I'M THE ONLY CALL ON THIS SUBJECT THEY HAVE EVER RECEIVED. So, I did get the service guy to say that it is probably the SHIFT MOTOR, a $300.00 bill I get to look forward to! My advice, buy a cheep used explorer, or a new one that you dump after 2 years!

Strength:

Quality of materials, drivability, utility, towing capacity.

Weakness:

None

Purchased new in Aug 1999. Currently has 44,000 miles and runs very good. Have had no service problems to date. Has had routine maintenance at local Ford dealership with no problems. This has been my first domestic vehicle purchase since 1975. Very satisfied with Ford quality on this vehicle. Too bad my neighbor can say that about his GM product (2002 GMC pickup - "professional grade" indeed!). It's been in the shop numerous times.

Strength:

Powerful engine. Good gas milage for an SUV (20MPG) Good looks

Weakness:

Cheap interior parts Junky rear wiper motors The usual domestic vehicle gremlins

Bought this SUV new in 8-00.I now have 32,000 miles on it. I originally went looking for the 2000 model end sale units but liked the front styling and the fact it has 4 wheel disc brakes so I bought one of the first 2K1's. Overall this vehicle has been good as far as reliability (no breakdowns or repairs) but don't let that get you too excited as this vehicle has all the typical domestic gremlins like the interior matte finish doorpulls keep peeling and the dealer just keeps replacing them, squeaks and rattles inside that noone can seem to fix, the rear wiper quit and the dealer said they will fix it. The engine and 5spd auto are responsive and get it going quickly. Towed a U haul trailer round trip to Oregon and it pulled it well (no overheating or loss of power) Almost all the bigger problems that I have experienced with this vehicle have been caused by the dealer hiring inexperienced novice kids to do the repairs and not supervising them and this experience has been at 2 different dealerships and are as follows. 1. first time in for peeling door pull I got the vehicle back with screwdriver pry marks on the doorpanel where they carelessly pryed off a screw plug and a rattling speaker. The speaker was blown by the mechanic playing a local rap station at full bass and volume I know this because when I got in the vehicle it was still on the station and the bass control was full up. Dealer refuses to replace speaker saying it is not a mfg defect and that their "techs" would not do that to a customer vehicle. 2. Took it to a different Ford dealer for the 30K/mi service right before I took it on a trip, half way through the trip I started to see trand fluid under the vehicle it wasn't alot and ignored it,on the way home it started smoking from the bottom this was on a sunday made it home to discover that the entire undercarriage was covered in red trand fluid. Checked fluid level to find that it was grossly overfilled. went to the dealer on that monday and they told me "a new hire had done the trans service" obviously unsupervised. SUMMERY, It seems Ford is causing alot of their own problems by cheapening out on the mechanics and not overseeing what's going on.Thank God I bought an ext warranty.I would buy another but use independant service.

Strength:

Feels like a "heavy solid" car. New independent suspension makes ride so smooth. Better ergonomics than earlier models. Love the adjustable accelerator pedal. Great AC and defog. I can't complain with the 0% finance and the reabtes.

Weakness:

SO it eats gas. What Full size doesn't?

Rides like a Navigator. People stop me in parking lots and tell me how much they like the color combo of Red and Tan. They also want to know how it rides. I have owned 3 Explorers and this is the best one. The ride is so smooth and the interior is roomier than the '98 I last had.

Strength:

AWD system. V8 Engine

Weakness:

lack of space for cigarettes, sunglasses, change. Driver side front tire wearing rapidly on inside edge due to amount of neg camber (ball joint?)

I bought this truck knowing that the A/C / climate control was inoperable (i fixed it by finding a loose vacuum hose under the dash on passenger side). Pleased Overall. The Explorer had 61,000 miles when I bought it. It is the AWD model with V8 and it is a very nice system. The Engine is strong and quiet, and the AWD system operates flawlessly. After 4 new shocks and balancing all the tires and reducing tire pressure from 50 psi (go figure!) to apprx 30 psi, I thought I was driving a brand new vehicle. for the price I paid I am WELL pleased and would reccommend this particular model to anyone.

Strength:

None - looks OK

Weakness:

Everything!!

If you are looking to purchase one of these vehicles - DON'T. This Explorer has been a headache ever since we drove it off of the lot! I am a FIRM believer that when I purchase a vehicle to "use it up" and get every penny worth out of it. In the case of this purchase - it will NOT take long to "use it up" and I KNOW that I will not get out of it the money that was invested. Please look at the Toyota or Jeep if you are thinking SUV. I was SO unhappy after buying this vehicle that I took it in and asked to trade for something else (to the SAME dealership but different salesman than I bought it from) and they told me that (and I quote) "you got took" and wouldn't give me what I wanted for trade in value (not even close) so I am now stuck to keep it. WHat a nightmare. Ford's customer service has become very BAD! Look elsewhere than Ford!!!

EVERYTHING BASICLLY. THE VALUE OF THE CAR DROPS SO MUCH THE FIRST YEAR. WE LOST SO MUCH. THE CAR IS ONLY WORTH $22000 NOW. DON'T BUY IT..

BUYING THE 2002 FORD EXPLORER LIMITED V8 WAS THE WORST THING I AND MY HUSBAND EVER DID. THE VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP MORE THAN ON THE ROAD.ON MY DAY OFF EVERY WEEK I HAVE TO BRING THE CAR FOR SERVICE. EVERY DAY THERE IS SOMETHING NEW THAT'S WRONG WITH THE CAR. - RADIO. CD'S WON'T COME OUT - WATER COMES IN THE BACK, FORD DOES'NT KNOW WHY. - 4X4 MAKES LOUD STRANGE SOUNDS - AIR CONDITIONING -FIRST TIME WE TURNED IT ON IT DIDN'T WORK, HOT AIR. IF YOU ARE THINKING OF BUYING THE VEHICLE DONT!!!!!!.
