Strength:

The ride is somewhat smooth especially traveling on the interstate. We feel comfortable and safe in it. The new power 3rd row seats are great. No more lifting it out.

Weakness:

Gas mileage is terrible. Noise in front end is an issue. Even the 5.4 liter engine could use more get up and go. Brake dust is awful.

This is our second Expedition (first was a 2000 4X4) and assumed we would have great results with it. Not the case, due to a left rear wheel noise, the entire rear end was replaced after 4000k miles. The front end makes a rough bumpy noise like having big off road tires. We have the regular OEM tires. Gas mileage is about the same as with the 4X4. Brake dust on front end is major bad.

this is a monster truck tuck'n 20 inch kmc,s gives then vehicle alot of road noise, loose front end feeling not so good on gas. Going from an explorer to this was a big change alot of after market products have been added such as: clear corner markers and tail lights really enhance the massive size.

size, price, has been very reliable, very good off road for its size, after all these years she still looks like new, very safe in an accident

Weakness:

fuel mileage, RIMS CRACKING, hard to reach plugs, wires etc. for service, resale value is low (in Canada anyways), completely gutless( feels like my 90 year old grandmother is under the hood ). they call that crap leather?did I mention its gutless?

bought this truck in 1998. now has 190,000 km (120,000 miles), this has been a pretty good truck. brakes and tires lasted 125,000, just did the clutch fan, battery and alternater. its a little hard on fuel considering its so gutless.the worst thing is the rims are cracking in the center!!! I have been rearended twice and have had barely a scratch while pretty much demoing the other vehicles

Auto mirrors adjust to where ever when ever. Front rotors will warp and have 2 times and had to be replaced. Brake dust is the worst of any vehicle I have ever seen. Clean the wheels and in one day they have a thick layer of dust on them...and I drive like I don't need brakes. Dealer suggest and sold me Klean Wheels dust shields. Gonna install and hope it cures the dust. 4.6 motor is lame, me and 3 guys with 4 golf bags in back and it barely pulls steep grades. Transmission acts up on start off sometimes....it will slip and grab.

I LOVE THE LOOKS AND POWER OF THIS VEHICLE, I LOVE THE SPACIOSNESS FOR MY CHILDREN, I JUST WISH FORD WOULD COME THROUGH WITH THEIR END OF THE BARGAIN, SO I CAN ENJOY THIS TRUCK, I HAVE MANY PLANS FOR TRAVEL IN IT.

Weakness:

THE AIR CONDITIONER SYSTEM NEEDS AN ALTERATION IN REFRIGERANT CHARGE TO WORK PROFICIANT, AND THE ENGINE RPM IS TOO HIGH RIGHT AT START UP, I HAVE A BAD FEELING THIS MIGHT MEAN SHORT BEARING LIFE IN THE ENGINE, DUE TO LACK OF OIL PRES AT STARTUP.

THE POWERSTEERING PUMP CONSTANTLY HOWLS, WHILE IN 4X4 DURING SEMI EXTREME TURNS THE CV JOINTS CLATTER, THE ELECTRIC DOOR LOCK SWITCH HAS TO BE ACTUATED SEVERAL TIMES TO UNLOCK DOORS, ENGINE OIL DIPSTICK TUBE BROKE ABOVE THE BRACING CLAMP, ONE OF MY TWO IGNITION KEYS IS NOT ALWAYS COMUNICATING CORRECTLY WITH MY FACTORY ALARM, SOME TIMES IT WONT START THE TRUCK, SWAP KEYS AND IMMEDIETLY STARTS, MY FRONT RIGHT WHEEL DEVLOPED A AIR LEAK THROUGH THE CENTER OF THE RIM,FUEL GAUGE OCASSIONALLY STICKS,SUSPENSION WISE IT DRIVES LIKE MY 73 CHEVY ONE TON 4X4, I DONT MIND ALL THIS BUT I BOUGHT IT FOR MY WIFE,TO TOP IT OFF I AM HAVING TO FIGHT WITH THE DEALER TO HAVE ANY OF THIS STUFF REPAIRED, IT SEEMS EVERYTHING WRONG IS NOT COVERED UNDER MY WARRANTY PLAN, EXTRA CARE USED PLAN, ACCORDING TO THEM, LITTLE DO THEY KNOW I HAVE NOT EVEN BEGUN TO FIGHT, I FIRST GAVE THEM THE OPPERTUNITY TO SHOW ME THEIR GOOD FAITH, NOW IS MY TURN.

Numerous manufacturing defects as outlined in the summary, mirror defect, tail light assembly defect, and braking problem

We had 2 flat tires within 6 months of ownership and have since heard bad things about the Continental that is standard on this model so we have replaced the other 2 tires. The tail light assembly on the drivers side filled with and retained water after it rained, this assembly was replaced by the dealership. We were alarmed to hear other owners had the same problem and in fact Ford manufacturing is aware of the problem but won't contact owners because it is not a "safety hazard." The automatic windows also do not function properly, on the Eddie Bauer edition, the windows are to retain the settings for 2 unique drivers. Not only do they not retain the settings, they automatically reset themselves in strange positions. Our service person at the dealership told us when we complained about this the first 2 times that the mirrors were set "outside the appropriate range." We insisted that they were setting that way automatically, in fact how can mirrors have an area they should not be set to. We were told the mirror issue was due to operator error and not malfunction, but on the third complaint we were told again this was a manufacturing defect and that there were corrective parts that could be installed, when I asked why we were not notified by Ford or the dealership, I was informed they were only fixing the item when the customer complained. Side mirrors in my mind are definitely a safety issue, and I don't understand why, after we complained twice, we were not notified that the problem had indeed been identified. The last problem (I hope the last anyway) has been with the braking system, but we only recently discovered the root of the problem. We have complained of a slight slipping or drag which we originally thought to be from the transmission at about 6 months of use to present. Each time we have taken the SUV in for maintenance we tell them about the problem, they tell us they can't duplicate it therefore they can't diagnose or fix it. We would feel a drag during a minor acceleration immediately after having applied the brakes, as with having just negotiating a turn or slowing down and speeding up with the flow of traffic. It did not happen constantly, but often enough that both of us felt it. We took the SUV in recently because it was in need of brake repair, which I find unusual because the SUV has only been on the road 14 months. The technician discovered that a piston in the rear caliper assembly was sticking, so much so that it could not be reassembled without altering the piston. This tells me that the piston could have been sticking on those occassions when we felt the drag after applying the brake and then trying to accelerate, and so I was working against the action of that driver side rear brake. We are now arguing with the dealership because we feel as though the wear on our brakes is unusual and is directly caused by the malfunctioning piston in the caliper assembly. Again, as with the mirrors, the brakes are integral to the safety of any automobile you drive and if this is a widespread problem I would expect Ford to notify its customers.

Strength:

Powerful (even with the smaller 4.6 V8 Comfortable on ling trips Big and safe for the wife and kids Room to spare Power folding rear seats are great Handles extremly well for a big vehicle Stops are very short( huge disc brakes)

Weakness:

Gas mileage around 14 mpg Brake Dust and more Brake Dust (huge disc brakes)

I prefer the newer body style of the 03 to that of the 2002 and older. It looks much tougher from the front as well as the sides. I have been fortunate not to have any major problems with it. The high-backed seats are very comfortable and the dash is set up just the way I like it. I also like the fact that the Expedtion is simple inside and plush at the same time. Although the Tahoe is a nice vehicle, it has a button for everything and the dirvers seat can be overwhelming and could be mistaken for the space shuttle at night. The Expedition only has the essentials. It handles well with the fully independent suspension and stops on a dime with its gigantic brakes. The giant disc brakes lead me to my only major complaint. It has the absolute worst brake dust problem of any vehicle that I have ever seen. I wash it twice a week(mostly to wash the dust off of the front wheels). And last but not least, the power fold rear seat is great for the wife who is a little to small to be climbing up in the back and wrestling a 100 lb seat out of the hatch.
