3rd row seat;passenger seating is what sold us to this vehicle.

Weakness:

As above and the radio sation buttons paint has completely worn off ater 1 year.

We bought this car in June 2002. At first..loved it. It was our first SUV. Two months after owning it,we were on a 2hr trip ad about 1hr into our ride, the air conditioner, which was on high, started blowing out air as if it was on low. The sound of the blower got louder. We took it to the dealer and they could not "duplicate" the problem. Drove it to NC in April..same thing happened. This time turned off the car for 15mins and it was fine. We still cannot get anyone to find the problem. Two weeks ago had it in the shop because the malfunction indicator light came on,it was the transmission module and some wires,so they said. Today had the same exact problem we had two weeks ago that they said they fixed and it is back in the shop. We bought this SUV with 26,000 mile on it and only have 36,000 mile on it now. Now I know why the person before us traded it in!!!!

a/c, function of the design.

Nothing but problems. It has a great concept as far as the strong v8. The shift on the fly 4wd and the looks, but as far as quality of craftsmanship it sucks. First the door locks did not stop locking and unlocking, something about a door switch shorting. While it was in the shop for that the check engine light came on which led to transmission problems. Then it became summer time and the a/c is way too under powered. No air flow and not cold enough. If your looking to buy one don't unless you live next to a dealership and it never gets above 80 deg.

Suspension, transmission, bad gas mileage

I should have never bought it. First off, I have had nothing but problems with the front suspension. Had the upper and lower control arms replaced less then one year ago. Now it is defective again. Had to replace almost completely bald front tires at 40K miles. The ball joints are now defective. Transmission is very picky. Can't decide what gear to shift into, and clunks very loud when going into reverse. Very bad gas mileage (11-12 MPG) and Premium fuel is required. Scared to drive my children around now because of other vehicle's wheels falling off due to suspension problems. Been a Ford guy my whole life. Now I know why I never bought a Dodge before, and NEVER will buy another. If you do buy a Dodge, I would suggest spending the extra $$$ for the extended warranty. Your going to need it.

Piece of crap. And that is putting it nicely. I have had nothing but problems with the front end. It was in the shop 7 times the first year with clicking noise in front end. Transmission clunks when you put in revers, has to replace brakes & tires within first year. Dealer replaced bearings, cracked hub caps, and then they said the fix for the noise is anti seize lubricant. still is not fixed to this day. Air condition sucks also.

Carrying capacity, seating capacity and a very compfortable ride.

Weakness:

Tires wear too quick, a/c works bad and front end work is definitely a need.

Great automobile in looks and compfort, wears out too fast, front end ball joints have been replaced. No telling what's next. Had to replace tires, especially the front, 4x's since 1999. We are a family of four and we travel quite often, The ac has never worked up to par throughout the vehicle and the passenger side window sometimes will go down and not up. Weve taken it to the dealer and more than likely were shafted by them. The vehicle itself is really nice.

Gas mileage (any 360 V8 is going to be the same)

I agree with a few of the people that have read and wrote reviews. This is a truck built to tow and haul not to sport you through the country side at 100 mph hugging every corner without feeling a slight bump. I am not sure if you are using the a/c correctly but mine is great it is like an ice box. like many other trucks it takes a minute to cool you vehicle down. Also the fact that it is a suv and has a very large passenger cabin which takes a while to cool. A thing that I have noticed with vehicles with large a/c condensers is that they require a recharge every 50000 miles especially with the new freon used. My transmission is also great I am pushing 67000 miles and have not had a problem. My Mother, Father, and friend all own their own Durangos and have not had any problems with their transmission. I have never had any problems with my electronics either nor any of my friends who own a dodge vehicle. Which is not to say the same for my other friends who have purchased Fords and have not had any luck with their power windows, doors, mirrors, fuel injection, alarm, etc. So really, as long as you take care of your car and not expect it to just work than it will perform great.

Weakness:

Gas mileage

I’ve read so many negative comments about this truck on this site, that I feel the need to vent a little before I give my review. Other reviewers are comparing this to cars or are upset that their little baby wakes up when the truck hits a bump. Boo-hoo-hoo, let me get you a hanky! Let me also remind you that this is a TRUCK. It’s not a car and it never should be compared to a car. If you’re looking for a car-like ride, then go buy a car! If you want a car-like ride, but want lots of space, then go buy a mini-van! Those of you who complain probably didn’t do your homework before buying…did you know that the Durango rides on a truck frame?? Surprise!! Therefore, don’t be upset that it happens to ride like a truck. Some of the newer, “more modern” SUV’s ride on unit-bodies and have a better on the road ride. True, but don’t dare take them seriously off-road and certainly don’t expect them to do what trucks do best…haul and tow stuff around. Also, I read someone complained about the service she got when she bought it used at discount dealer. What do you expect, dope? The dealer wants to unload the vehicle ASAP…if you want a good used car, then go buy it from a dealer where at least you get a warranty and a service department. Okay, now my review… I bought a 2000 Durango SLT with the 5.9L. Yes, it was in the shop about 4 times the first year I got it. The clutch switch in the steering wheel went south, the door locks were temperamental and the transmission slipped too much. Guess what I did? I took it to my dealer and demanded everything be fixed. Guess what? They fixed it…period. It hasn’t been back to the shop in over 2 years except for preventative maintenance. Besides the dismal gas mileage, I’ve no complaints. The engine runs great and the performance is just fine considering this is a heavy TRUCK. I’ve got lots of room, the leather seats are great, and all the accessories work as expected. Would I buy it again? Hard to say, but back in 2000, I didn’t see anything better. Will I keep it? NO! But that’s only because I’m buying the new Durango Hemi later this year.
