Strength:

Good looking vehicle.

Weakness:

Gas hog (but then we expected that), transmission problems, ball joints, brakes and tires). Also airconditioning leaves a lot to be desired if your aren't sitting in the front seat with the vent blowing at full blast directly on your face.

We have had problems too numerous to list on our Dodge Durango (ball joints, transmission, brakes, crappy tires, etc.) Was in the shop on at least three occasions for transmission - next to last time they replaced the seals, and a couple of weeks ago, the entire transmission died (85,000 miles) to the tune of almost $3,000. My husband is very faithful in servicing the engine (oil changes, etc.) so it is NOT due to servicing. The depreciation on this vehicle has left us with almost no choice but to keep it until it finally falls apart completely (which might be in the near future)! We'll never own another Dodge vehicle again that's for sure!

Strength:

Nice design, roomy, drives great in snow

Weakness:

Unreliable

Didn't have any problems for first 7 months, but suddenly there was an electrical shortage and everything from the lights, to the wipers, the automatic locks, windows stopped working. It was covered under warrenty, but who knows what will go wrong when that is up. Currently it is making a squeaky noise under the left front tires, I haven't had it checked out yet.

Model Reviewed: SLT Plus 4.7 4X4

Strength:

Interior, quick acceleration, zero problems with it over three years (except a drivers seat heater), good sound system, comfortable on long trips,

Weakness:

A little small behind the third row for cargo, drives like a truck, but then again, thats what it is. 2001 is a much much better drive than the 98 that we had.

Second Durango, had a 98 as well. These cars have been absolutely reliable and excellent. I read that many people have had suspension problems up front, I guess we've been lucky. Our 98 Durango had absolutely zero problems, the 2001 had a drivers seat heater failure, which is really no big deal, but that was it. I must admit, that the local dodge dealer was sort of lame about repairing it, but other than that, the vehicle has been stellar. We are going to get a 2004, as we none of the other 3 row SUVs (lots of kids) are directly competitive in terms of size, either too big or too small. This one is just right for us. The suburban class is simply too huge, and the Envoy/Explorer is too small, but the Durango is just right. Can't say we've had much dealings with Chrysler on it, as it has been totally reliable. Chrysler Credit leasing is a great company to lease through, totally hassle free. Really have nothing bad to say about the Durango.

Strength:

4.7L power, seating for 7, great highway ride for a truck, not too little, not too big SUV

Weakness:

Brake Life Rear only ABS Dodge service network

Other than having to put new brakes on the front at 30,000, this truck has been a good one. I tow a Malibu ski boat or a pair of jet skis all summer long, and the 4.7L does it with ease. Rear heating and cooling are valuable for quick heat up/cool down. If you don't want some of the SUVs because they are a little too minivanish, and can't fit a Tahoe or Suburban in the garage, get the Durango. The only bad part about the truck is that with seating for 7, the guys at work make me drive to lunch. Good highway ride for a truck. Mileage is what should be expected. I get 14.5 in the city and 17.5 on the highway. There are lots of complaints about transmission and/or engine failures, but I bet that a majority of those compaining haven't done the maintenance as scheduled. I love this truck. THis is the first vehicle that I have owned that I can say that about it.

Looks, size, seating for seven

Weakness:

gas mileage, dependability

Ball Joints have been replaced 3 times in 90,000 miles. Car is used on highways only. Gas mileage has never been better that 16 HWY. Neither Dealer of Dodge stood behind the ball joint problem.

Strength:

Good looks, powerful engine.

Weakness:

rides like a truck, gas mileage is horrible. Forget Customer Assistance from Chrysler. They are unresponsive.

Engine had to be replaced at 68,000 miles. Of course it was out of warranty because Chrysler knows they can't guarantee this engine for more than three years. It is an overpriced piece of junk.If only we had seen Consumer Reports ratings on this vehicle before we purchased it. Go buy something Japanese before this happens to you.

Looks, powerful engine, comfortable, roomy.

Weakness:

I get around 14-16 city miles per gallon, Which kind of stinks! but that's the price you pay for a V8! I also have a feeling that I'll be replacing brakes frequently, because of the size and weight of the Durango. Takes alot of braking to stop this sucker!

I love my 4.7 durango 4x4. I have though already had to put upper ball joint in front passenger side. And for some reason enging wants to die at first start up? Rides alittle rough. But comfortable to drive and like sitting up high.

Styling. Layout. Rear air. 3rd row seat. Power. Turning radius.

Weakness:

Fuel economy. Ride is harsh. 3rd row headrests obstruct view. Large blind spots.

Love this SUV! Had high mileage, 57,000. Still was MINT condition. No complaints on the AC, Icy cold in 100 degree heat. The 4wd works excellant. Low range is outstanding for pulling the boat out. The 4.7L motor is a classic. Power is incredible for its size. Could really use 4 wheel independant suspension.

Strength:

Looks, power, comfort, nice exahust note for us old muscle car folks.

Weakness:

4W ABS should standard and be offered as a delete instead of the converse. Have not driven enough yet to test mileage, but in town looks like 11 at best. My SHO got 17 in town and 25 hwy.

I bought my Durango from a private seller who kept it garaged and only put 26k on it in 2 years. I wanted the 4.7 motor as it is OHC technology and allegedly less thirsty than the 5.2/5.9 I don't tow, so that is not an issue. I like the room and the feeling of being able to see further ahead due to its height. I will NEVER understand though why Chrysler only puts rear wheel ABS as standard instead of the 4 wheel. it has everyting you could want EXCEPT 4w ABS. I called my dealer to see if they could upgrade it, and they laughed and asked if I had an extra $2500 to play with. Rear a/c is a must and the third seat is great for the kids. Also whats with using non platinum plugs that are worn out at 30K. I will be pulling platinum back in when I change them. Color here is the Red Garnet Pearl w/silver flairs and running boards. Plenty of room and power. This car replaced a 1995 Taurus SHO, so it was/is quite a change for me never havin owned an suv/4x4.

None-- I am very concerned about several Durango owners with bad oil pumps and failed engines due to "sludge". I will be watching mine like a hawk, and documenting every service to a "T"
