Strength:
4X4, power, cofortable seating nice view, looks like a nice SUV
Weakness:
Engine doesn't seem to be able to handle the stress of it's own power. Rough ride but it is a truck. Poor suspension had to replace the rear struts after the first year. Electric windows very poor. READ THIS BEFORE BUYING A DURANGO! Nice looking SUV. Not something I would buy again. We bought our in 1999 as a lease back with 19000 KM on it. Intentions of buying it was because of its so call towing capacity, WRONG! We were told that it could tow 7800 lbs and after we bought it and started looking for a trailer it could only tow 6800 lbs. Anyway, it is a great vehicle in the winter it goes thorough a lot, but not nice for braking the backend likes to slide out from you when your on ice. 40000 KM or so the transition went funny, some kind of electronic valve in it. That was on warranty. Drivers side window mechanism failed, dealer was nice enough to suck up the cost of labor but it still cost for the parts. Now @ 75800 KM were are now putting over $1700 into the engine because one of the heads cracked and the other one is warped. Now I know what your thinking, the trailer we bought is too big, but on the contrary it is 1500 lbs UNDER the max trailer weight. Warranty is off it and we were never asked about extended at the time of purchase, we have a year and a bit left and I don't know if it will be worth it to buy extended warranty for another $1700 or not. I don't suggest it for trailering, I REGRET GETTING THIS ONE. Similar Products Used: Chev Astro Van |

Strength:
Lots of power, unstoppable in the snow. Plently of leg room and comfort on a long trip. Rides better than most 4X4.
Weakness:
I have had some problems, this truck skidded sideways out of control several times on the snow covered highway 2wd. The back end is to light, make sure you are in 4 wheel or hang on tight. The air conditioning quit before I got it off the lot. Battery leaked onto frame, auto locks operated by self, dealer called it possessed (there was a TSB issued to fix it) I had to replace rear springs and the intermediate steering shaft. This all occured within 20,000 miles. Good chance I won't buy another Dodge or Chrysler product again. I will get rid of it when warranty is up. Durango's are overpriced. Durango slams through the snow in Buffalo NY without batting an eyelash. Use the 4X4 as it is worthless without it. Carry a lot of cash on trips or credit card as it loves fuel but it's a truck. Weakness:
gas consumption, but then again it is a TRUCK. Also, seem to be getting condensation trapped inside when it's a cool sunny day, then moisture starts to build up on the windshields. During the winter months only. Any body else seem to have this problem? Would like to hear any suggestion from anyone. Thanks great truck, like the looks and performance of the truck. |

WARRANTY, MOTOR, TRANSMISSION $4600. to replace motor??????? and can only be replaced by a Chrysler Dealership, isn't that a racket. I only can hope that anyone buying this vehicle checks this site first. DON'T BUY ANY CHRYSLER PRODUCT, WHATEVER YOU DO!!! I have had this vehicle for just under three years, and have nothing but headaches. We loved it when we first bought the car, we have 5 children and needed something to get everyone around in and was tired of the mini vans and all of their headaches, so we turned to the SUV. Well what a mistakes this was, our first repair was the heater core, I brought it to the first dealership with the smell of antifreeze spewing from the air vents, to the point we had to drive with our windows open. Well they couldn't seem to smell it, told me it was our thermostat and replaced it, which was not a covered part, as normal. We also had trouble with our headlight switch, which was a covered part. However, I was still smelling antifreeze. The next dealership, well, they couldn't find the problem either, so away they sent us, $50.00 later (that's the deductible), only for the problem to persist. Once again to return with the problem. Only for them to finally agree that it was the HEATER CORE and finally fix it, and now it is no longer under warranty. So now it was our problem, except we complained enough and they finally decided to pay for the repair, due to the fact that it had been in for the same problem numerous times, while still under warranty. Now we actually had gone three and half months before the next problem came about, which was the oil pump. Our check gauges light kept coming on and our oil pressure gauge would drop to 0 and then bounce back to about 40 pounds of pressure. We happened to be out of state when this occurred, so we took it to a Jiffy Lube to have the oil checked and changed (Less than 3,000 miles from the previous oil change)to see what the problem was. The man there said the oil was clean and wasn't sure but thought the oil pump could be going. So when we got back home, back to the dealer we went. Only to be told that they couldn't get it to happen and that they hooked it up to a machine to find an error code, only nothing showed up. When we said we think it's the Oil Pump we were told, "if there was a problem with the oil pump, it wouldn't be just yours, we would have more than just you with this problem." Once again left the dealership with the car not fixed. Now we went away on another trip and it started again. So when we got back we took the car in again, only had the head mechanic ride in the car with me, and guess what it started happening again, only I was told it was electrical, and if the oil pump was failing the motor would have seized by now. So back to the dealership to make an appointment for them to check it out again. They kept the car for several days, one mechanic drove my car home, so they could see if it would happen again for him. Guess what it didn't. Again we were told it's electrical, did they fix anything electrical, no. So we told them that we were on our way to New York City and if it happened on the way there that we would continue driving it, because nothing was wrong with the oil pump, and they said "yes". So we did, only we brought our video camera and taped it happening and the sound of the motor when we got there, which didn't sound good. When we got back, I called the dealership and told them, and let them know that I also had it on video tape. Back to the dealer, only this time I drove it around first so the problem would be happening when I brought it in. Finally, June of 2002, they fixed the oil pump, only while fixing the oil pump, the new one that they put in failed and they had to order another one. Which puts us in the current position. Our oil pressure gauge started to act up again, only this time the motor seized, and I only have 66,000 miles on the car and they refuse to cover it saying there is sludge in the motor. Apparrently, there is oil being sold on the market that is bad and has been sludging after 40 hours of operation, and they knows about it. |

Strength:
All: driveability, comfort, roomy and TOUGH !!
Weakness:
Fuel, but if I wanted a sipper I would have bought a Subaru. Just turned 87,200 miles. The only repairs I have done was the fan clutch and the front rotors (due to a pinhead over torquing the bolts). This truck is great. Most reliable vehicle I've owned. Just had 26.6 inches of snow. This truck is UNSTOPPABLE. Never got stuck once!! Excellent vehicle and I will buy another. Strength:
Great styling and horsepower (318ci/230hp)Roomy and convenient interior design.
Weakness:
Ride is a little rough but it is a 4x4. Fuel mileage is not exceptional but then again it is a truck and not a yugo. Paid too much.Should have dealed more. We traded our '97 Wrangler TJ to make room for our new baby. Bought the '98 4x4 w/ 18,000 miles.Love the styling, horsepower and 4x4 capability.Color is awesome too(intense blue). We are active with 3 boys now and love the room. Great on a long trip or short excursion. Love the "throaty" muscle car idle too.We were impressed with the Tie-downs that were provided for the car seat as well. It's pretty much everything we like in a family vehicle/Sporty off-road truck. However, there are a few annoyances. Both power rear windows stopped working right away, the radio tuner is the worst ever, and the front washer valve broke.I replaced the radio, and have been dealing with the windows not working.I'll get around to the valve replacement someday. Weakness:
Serious suspension problem when going over random bumps or indentations in the road at speeds of 35 mph or higher. The SUV gets thrown to the right, one time half way into the next lane. It has been checked about 5 times by dealer with no explanation. Chrysler, in Auvurn Hills MI (customer service) initially offered a local contact to help fix problem. No one called us. Upon reminding them, Chrysler washed their hands of it, telling us that upon review there is nothing they can do. Time to report this to the Attorney General's Office followed by a lawsuit (lemon law). Roomy. Great turning radius. |

Gas milage and repairs...lots of repairs on items that you would expect to last over 100,000 miles. Dimlar Crysler Corp unwilling to fix defective parts (doors locking and unlocking) or issue a recall. A large red hole where all the money goes. Repairs started at 17000 miles with broken distibuter shaft. Next at 22000 miles sqeaking struts were replaced. Next at 28000, 33000, 41000, 56000 and now again at 70000 miles all doors lock and unlock at all times with no imput. I have lay in bed at night listening to my $34000.00 investment lock and unlock itself for hours and for days until motors burn themselfs out and now can only make a loud buzzing noise. This has been to the dealer for repair everytime with only a temporary fix. Dodge has told us that it is no longer under warranty and the dealer is not required to fix it. Now at 72000 miles the power stearing pump is out and the repair is quoted at $816.55. This will be my last repair bill as I dump this lemon on some other poor soul and purchace a GM product. Oh Yeah...Struts are sqeaking again. Similar Products Used: Chevy Blazer |

Strength:
Strong engine 5.9L, pull 3500 pound 22 ft boat and trailer, snowmobiles, and jet skis. NO Problems. Leg Room, Very quick off the line, 4wd in winter, lots of interior space, handles well in turns (unlike other big suv's). Price not bad compared to other vehicles, plus bigger engine in Durango.
Weakness:
2 biggest complaints. Interior noise has gotten louder, suspension makes you feel the bumps-thuds on potholes (annoying at times). Maybe cuz it's not a car though. Gas Mileage 10-14 mpg is bad but knew before I bought it. Seats not heated, boring dash layout. This would be an ideal car if it were just quieter and had a better suspension. I don't mind the vehicle as I don't have a long drive to work. I wouldn't want this vehicle, however, if I had to drive more than 20 miles 1 way to work. It's not real comfortable above 55mph and the noise and bumps can get to you. No problems yet, but I'm a little worried after reading these posts. Definitely not a Lexus, but not priced like one either. Re-sale is horrible, but that's on all vehicles cuz of 0/0 financing over last couple of years. I mainly use this as a winter and tow vehicle. Have not had any problems, but only 16,00 miles in 2 and 1/2 years. I like this vehicle and have only minor quibbles about it. I usually only buy japanese vehicles for reliability reasons, but got the Durango for leg room and utility (also have a car for summer). I'm 6'3" and 240 lbs. This was one of the few vehicles I can actually stretch my legs out in. Only maintenance is oil change every 3000 miles and fluids. I haven't experienced any problems yet, but can tell this vehicle is not as well put together as others I have driven. Mine is green 5.7L full time 4wd.
