Blazer w/ tow pkg
Strength:
Power, mileage, comfort, reliability (always starts even in the bitter Wyoming winters), push button 4WD, Great off-road ability for an unmodified rig.
Weakness:
Poor interior wiring. Plastic interior panels seem cheap. We bought this SUV to be my wife's car. It replaced a Pontiac Transport Mini-van. We purchased it used with 120,000 miles. We have put 25K miles on it in two years. Best SUV I have ever owned or even driven. Plenty of power, enough to tow an 18' camping trailer. This rig is rated at over 5000 pounds towing weight and they aren't kidding. Handles really good for the height and even though your not going to beat your average corvette it performs better than the majority of SUVs out there. Comfortable for me (6'5") and my wife (5'1") both. And the Trailblazer is supposed to be even better!!! Strength:
Solid performer. Reasonably priced.
Weakness:
Front seats could be more comfortable and high backs block visibility. Windshield is too small and too low for tall drivers. Tighter turning radius would be nice. This will be a counterpoint to some of the earlier reviews. My Blazer is 5 yrs old and has 53K on it. I have taken very good care of it and the only problems I've had are a minor leak from a rear pinion seal, broken elec. attachment to rear defogger, broken driver's side seat adj. handle - all repaired hassle free under warranty. It has always started with just the slightest touch of the key, even at -15. The V6 has more than adequate but less than dazzling power. Gas mileage on road trips in warm weather is routinely around 23mpg and is occasionally over 25mpg if I keep it around 65mph. Far less in the city, esp. in winter. It's a fairly easy car to maintain (oil change, lube, etc.) yourself. It's a good size for an SUV - not too big, not too small. The ac, heat and sound system are way above average. Seat comfort
Weakness:
Transmission - I have had to replace the transmission twice on a 2000 model. At over $2,000 a time, this is an expensive problem that Chevy will not stand up to being a problem. Also, the metal on the seat handles keep breaking. The hose for the water fluid for the back window keeps coming disconnected. I continue to have the same problems with this vehicle repeatedly even after having them fixed. The car is very comfortable but quality is lacking. Similar Products Used: Jeep |

Strength:
Nice interior and good all purpose vehicle.
Weakness:
Needs lots of service. I bought the vehicle new. Have had several problems so far. Needed front wheel bearings replaced at 20K. AC Delco battery had a meltdown at 25K. Service engin soon light came on at 37K and needs a new air pump. Thats where im at today. 100K extended waranty is a must for this vehicle. |

S10 Blazer
Strength:
Reliable and tough drivetrain. Strong towing capability (5500 lbs). Powerful engine. Great traction off road and on ramps especially with locking diff (which mine has). Good for carrying stuff with rear seat folded (you could even sleep in there if you are 6 feet or less). Nice looking with the alloy wheels and trim package. I like some of the options on the truck...the cruise control, air conditioning, power windows, power locks, and push button 4 wheel drive. Button on dash to automatically open rear window is convenient too. Nice to have shifter on column freeing up space on floor for putting stuff. Looks better too imho. Reasonable price for a used truck. New ones way over-priced like the majority of vehicles out there. So far the maintenance costs have been very low. Less than $1000 for almost 5 years use.
Weakness:
Cheap looking dash gauges. Too many functions on lever (cruise, wipers, high beams, turn signals). Half the time when I press the lever to activate turn signals the wipers come on...very annoying. There is a rattle over some bumps that I have not been able to isolate. Not that loud but irritating. No headrests for rear seat...there should be! Bad design for rear window defroster wiring...wire kinks at 90 degrees and will snap. Hard riding. Feels top-heavy in turns. Not very good mileage. Depreciates quickly. Still, the strengths far outweigh the weaknesses imho. This has been a reliable and useful truck over the last 4 1/2 years. I purchased this truck in 1999 so it was about 5 years old at that point. It had about 84, 000 Km on it (around 50, 000 miles). It now has about 127,000 km on it. I originally bought it to tow a 16 foot boat with a 70 Horse engine (around 2500 lbs). There is not much out there these days that will tow much. Front wheel drive vehicles are not good for towing. I had a 87 Bonneville (front wheel drive) but it was only rated for 1000 lbs! The Blazer will tow up to 5500 lbs. I had no problem towing the boat up steep and sometimes slippery ramps. I have taken it off road a number of times and it has never got stuck. It has been useful for carrying large items. Just fold the seat down and you have a 6 foot bed. It needed a new fuel pump early on ($500 parts and labour). Other than that only a couple of minor things...the wire to the rear defroster broke on it's own and the tailgate handle broke off in my hand. That was my fault, I think I turned it the wrong way but it broke fairly easily. The wire to the window has broken again. It's a dumb design, the wire joins the connector at 90 degrees and is bound to break. I'm going to live without the defrost. Once the EGR valve got something stuck in it causing the truck to run really rough and it stunk like sulpher. I took it to a dealer and got it fixed for 50 bucks. But... these things are minor. I have done the regular maintenance including flushing the tranny and differentials on an annual basis. All in all it has been very reliable. Mind you, I haven't really put that many kliks on it. Similar Products Used: Have test driven Explorer, Rodeo and 4Runner. All were gutless (and over-priced) compared to the Blazer. |

Nice interior.
Weakness:
See Review summary above. Would never buy another Blazer. Has scared me from buying anymore GM products. I have had this in the Dealership multiple times for a shuddering in the rear end at take off(doesn'tt happen all the time). Transmission slipping. The Service advisor at Metro Chevrolet in Columbus OHio actually felt the transmission slip, but told me he could not tear into the tranny because it did not flag an error code and GM would not authorize the work. On a long trip to Florida after stopping and staring , the rear end made a binding metallic noise. thought It was going to die right there. The GM dealerships WILL NOT try and find what this problem is. They straigh up[ told me I would have to wait to have a breakdown. I called the GM customer service which is a joke and waste of time. I am now stuck with a vehicle that I bought new in 2001 that cannot trust to take on long trips . GM Service is absolutely pathetic! Similar Products Used: Jeep Cherokee. Firm ride ,room to haul the dogs and people. Great road trip vechicle. 20+ mpg on the hiway
Weakness:
could use a v-8 I'm the second owner. bought the truck from a dealer it was a trade in. The org. owner had all the recall stuff done the only problems I,ve had was replaced the alt.,battery, and one ABS wheel speed sensor. Other than that just general maitinance. Since I tow a 3500 lbs boat I have installed a power chip, duel exhaust, and better coil over shocks. The blazer has run fine with 127,687 miles on it (was bougth with 68,000). by the way its a 5 door 2 wheel drive. With the V6 CMFI engine which I understand is the high output model. the entire vehicle is weak. This is the worst vehicle I have ever owned. It has been in the shop from day one: new battery, alternator, steering wheel pinions fell out in my driveway, water hose, no horn - fuse never works, and the grandaddy of them all after one whole year...I had a transmission put in. 2 weeks later, the transmission hose cut up everything under the hood along with the fan belt, causing the transmission to leak all of its fluid out. I bought a lemon. Similar Products Used: Explorer - fantastic vehicle |
