Strength:

The best thing about this car is you can always count on one fact, it''s in the shop so much you won''t have to put that much gas in it.

Weakness:

EVERYTHING. The amount of money it cost me to fix the car was more than the payments I made total. Chevy issued recalls and sent letters but if you don''t have original receipts(not duplicates from the dealer), if you sold the car because you got tired of choosing between your mortgage payment and a repair bill, and belive me it will come to that, or if you don''t send a cover letter, or the original letter they sent you about the recall you can kiss your money good-bye. The week after purchased, only 2 years old at the time, I had to replace the muffler, then the service engine soon light came on, actually, I don''t think it ever turned off. We replaced the egr valve (a recalled part I can''t get my back for)at least 3 times. And the minute you left the dealer and went home and then got back in your car the engine light''s on again. Oh and then theres this thing with the ball joints, those broke, a recalled part that I can''t get my money back for,(because I don''t have the car anymore) Which I sold because that day alone was 1200.00 dollars easy. I guess I''m lucky though, I didn;t kill myself, my kids or anyone on the road when those broke. God-forbid maybe if I had th

I bought this car used. It was a piece of garbage brand new so imagine buying one used that was never taken in to fix the bizillion recalls it has.

Strength:

Great power, nice looking vehicle, good space (I can carry a ton of windsurfing gear in it), it has a tailgate which I like. I like how this vehicle is not too big, not too small.

Weakness:

Biggest complaint is that the A/C compressor went out at 60K miles. Set me back 1,200. For such a small truck, it has a VERY poor turning radius and bad gas milage. Also, it is a top-heavy vehicle, and you need to treat it as such.... watch out for sharp curves!

Geez... I can''t believe i hear so many bad reviews for the Blazer. I''ve owned it for 3 years and its really been very awesome overall. I bought this vehicle new and I have 68,000 miles and it''s still going. I''ve made two driving trips from Austin to San Diego with NO problems.... But then again, I do every single maintenance item on the list. It makes me want to buy a Trailblazer in the future.

I have totally had it with this car - it is only three years old and has only 17,000 miles on it. Last month, it needed a new ball join, then the transmission fluid started leaking, supposedly a three hour job, while they were working on that, they found another problem, a 10 hour job. What''s the deal? None of these problems have been identified by Chevy for recall. I just got the thing paid off and I''m ready to trade it in; I had originally intended this to be the last car I ever bought. Wrong! When I trade it in, it won''t be for another Chevy.

Model Reviewed: S-10 Tahoe 4x4 4-door Blazer

Strength:

The Vortec V-6 is an alright engine, and it has 4x4 and decent ground clearance. I am averaging 18 mpg driving back and forth to school, basketball, and work. With some tweaking, 20 mpg sounds pretty realistic. I also fit pretty well, considering that I''m 6'' 10". I like the way it looks and the stock aluminum wheels on it.

Weakness:

It needed new torsion bar mounts, there is some rust, and the outside-mounted spare tire squeaks like mad. Also, the IFS is not exactly my ideal setup. Too bad they replaced the Blazer with those Trailblazer contraptions. I will never buy a vehicle with a completely independent suspension. Also, what''s up with only the 4.3 being offered? Come on Chevy, you know that if you make S-10s and Blazers with a small block V-8 (the new 4.8 would be a perfect mixture of mileage and power), people will sweep them up. Look how popular 350 S-10s are in drag racing. And taking a cue from 4wheeling magazines, if you make a solid axle truck with a V-8, big tires, and good low-range gears, your popularity would skyrocket. The SSR looks to be a good retro car-truck, now how about a retro 4x4? Also, like others, I am not too fond of the interior panels. I had to put lift shackles on the back to level it out (it was about 2" lower than the front). In aftersight, I shoud have just replaced the leaf springs. There is also a bit more body roll than I would like to accept.

I have had this truck for 6 months now. It is my second Blazer (the first was an ''86 4x4 S-10 model w/ 2.8 V-6). After reading all these complaints about the newer models, I''m glad that mine is one of the older ones. I now have 62,000 miles on it. I''ve always liked Blazers. I would have preferred to buy a 1990 Ford Bronco, but this has better gas mileage. This summer I''m getting two tone paint(black top with stock red on the bottom), customizing the interior, and a new exhaust. I would like to lift it but IFS lifts cost so damn much. As it is now I have self fabricated lift shackles for the back, shaved emblems, an MTX amp with 2 Rockford Punch 10''s (soon to be one MTX 6000 12"), and an Alpine CD Player

I hope that you are rich enough to afford all the repairs. I would never wish this vehicle on an enemy.

I hate this vehicle. I bought it used in 1999. It had 45000 miles on it. I got the extended warranty for one year. The month after my warranty ran out, my transmission went out. I had 57,000 miles on it. The repair cost me over $1500. I have also replaced the ball joints and the radiator thanks to Dex-Cool. I have had this thing alligned several times and it will not hold an allignment. It rattles like you wouldn''t believe. I have talked to the local Chevy dealership about the problems with the coolant that GM now uses. My whole cooling system is shot because of the Dex-Cool and they said that it is my fault that the coolant doesn''t work right because I let air get to the coolant. I also have problems with a clunking noise every time that I put the truck in drive or reverse. I have read other reviews of the 97 Blazer, and every complaint that I have read about applies to my Blazer as well. And as long as GM uses Dex-Cool, and fails to acknowledge that they put out a piece of crap in 97 and haven''t recalled it for half of the problems wrong with it, I will never buy another GM product again.

Great looking always liked the blazer. I had the dealer throw in a set of michelin LTX M/S meats on it. I recommend the blazer i have a couple repairs done since ive owned it. heater core went brake light switch went puffed blue smoke went started and that was it so far. Ive put 1200 dollars into performance mods on it. I love it it has a squeak at the rear window its the latch on the window that meets the tailgate. The latch wears either replace or wrap with electrical tape every once and awhile. i use mine to race people love it.

After 8 visits between 2 dealers we still have a truck that shakes violently at speeds of 35 miles an hour and over 65. It has become so bad that we are refusing to drive the truck. Chevrolet was excellent until they exhused all measures of fixing it. The final answer was that it was a characteristic of the vehicle. If it was a characteristic of the vehicle then why did they send us to another dealer to attepmt to fix the problem??? Their last word was for us to call the better busines bureau and even went as far as giving us the phone number. I contacted Chevrolet and told them that I could not believe that they are closing our case. After I threatened to park my truck across from the dealer with lemons decals all over it and a sign that said "Before you buy a new chevrolet please call --------" did they make an attempt to resolve the issue. We are still waiting..... Talk about a LEMON. We have now contacted the Attorney General. After 4 months of this we will now have to wait at least another month to get an answer. The Attorney Generals office stated that shaking and vibrations are NOT a characteristic of any vehicle. Please reconsider buying a trailblazer or blazer with the touring suspenion.

Looks, ride hight and gas mileage. Added a set of dual exhausts after the Catylitic convertor and it now sounds like a gas engined vehicle should. I replaced the hard Michelin tires with Dunlops and eliminated the ride harshness. I think this is a darn good machine but remember it is more car then off-road truck!

Weakness:

Would have liked a small V-8 but I will live with the Vortec V-6 and my dual exhausts. Had a minor problem with a slow air leak but cleaning up the corrosion in the alloy wheels solved the problem. The biggest problem with the Blazer is spending to much time reading all the crappy comments about it on the internet. Perhaps I will just drive it and enjoy it. Remember all vehicles these days have some problems.

Good solid machine but you have to remember it is not a off-road vehicle despite the 4 wheel drive. If you treat it like a good quality car it will hang together. In 3 years it has needed ball-joints and 1 ABS wiring harness to the front wheel. However in 3 years it has never failed to start and run reliably at temperatures down to -35 degrees F.

Lack of dependability

We purchased our 1999 Chevy Blazer new in Feb, 1999. We have replaced the transmission, axle boots, the ball joints, and the exhaust from the y-pipe back. We just found out that the air conditioning compressor is out, the fuel system is rusty and the drive belt is cracked. All this on a 1999 vehicle. I would NOT recommend this vehicle to anyone who needs dependability and reliability.

Strength:

Rugged, powerful (4.3 engine), reliable, moderately comfortable (they aren''t supposed to be a Lexus, afterall...).

Weakness:

The hood hinges never did fit right, they always rattled. The back glass squeaked from the time we got it as well, despite repeated efforts to fix it. And it just wouldn''t run forever....

I recently traded off my ''90 S10 2 door Blazer. It had 175,000 miles on it and was still going. Having owned it for 5 years and putting on 100,000 miles, I must say it was the best vehicle I''ve ever owned. Aside from routine maintenance, we replaced the alternator at 160,000 miles, and two sets of ball joints (we live a number of miles down a very rural, never-maintained road...it happens to all vehicles where we live). One set at 90,000 miles, the other at about 140,000. We also replaced the starter three times in 100,000 miles... By the time we traded it off, it had more shakes, shimmies and jingles than a belly-dancer, but it always got me from point A to point B realiably. (With our second child on the way, and living 50 miles from town, we decided it was time to quit pressing our luck and move on to a newer vehicle. :) If you want a car-like ride, maybe consider a minivan. But if you need to be able to haul your crew through rougher terrain than rush-hour traffic, I would highly recommend a Blazer. Chevy has made this thing for almost 20 years...I think they''ve gotten most of the kinks worked out. :)
