Roomy,decent ride for a truck,looks good
Weakness:
POOR MPG ,cheap interior I traded a 2001 Tiburon in on the blazer because I needed something I could work out of. So far,so good but all the horror stories I am reading about is making me nervous.I knew about the reviews and got a 2 year 24,000 mile warranty with it. So far I like it.My x had a 91 Blazer and had no problems with it other than the gas gauge,so I based alot on that.Im not real crazy about the cheap Interior parts, and never was a GM man ,but we will see. Strength:
Roomy cabin, powerful engine
Weakness:
Harsh ride, weak brakes, lots of little glitches, rattles This is the second S-10 Blazer I''ve owned. Previously, we had a 1984 S-10, which was crude, hard riding, a bit gutless, but reliable. It was destroyed in a rollover accident (typical SUV crash) and had 219,000 miles on the original engine. This vehicle has been a disappointment. It took three weeks for the dealership to get it to run right (fortunately, they had promised that everything would be working when they gave it to us). It still has the typically harsh ride we experienced in our previous S-10. The brakes are also very weak; problem is that the rotors are not big enough to soak up the heat generated by stopping this heavy vehicle. They tend to warp, and need frequent turning. The A/C finally died (compressor fell apart, clutc popped out), and the radiator had to be replaced (can''t solder or weld the new plastic/aluminum radiators). On the positive side, the Vortec motor has always been a quick starter, and has power. The cabin is roomy, especially the back seat, and accommodates loads easily. Still, not a very good vehicle. We will probably keep it until it drops, but I would be hard pressed to recommend this vehicle to anyone. Chevy Blazer
Strength:
. Good looks . Great gas mileage . lots of power
Weakness:
. Faulty oil hoses . Faulty brakes (replaced twice in one year.) . Interior quality is bad. There is always something breaking off. Last week it was the drivers seat adjustment handle. This is a great looking vehicle and is surprisingly good on gas (28mpg hwy). The quality workmanship is deplorable. The paint is chipping off of the bottom of the doors due to poor adhesion. There is no rust or scratches. The paint is simply lifting off in long strands with shinny new metal underneath. We have just installed a new engine ($5400.00) due to the failure of a crimp in an oil hose that goes from the crank case to the radiator. The hose was not deteriorated and may be fairly new. The crimp simply failed and the flex hose popped out as clean as a whisle. as a result, the Vortec engine seized up before I could get it off the road. The engine only had about 70,000 miles on it with a full service record. No help from GM. I know these hoses are a problem because I had to replace them on my 1195 Astro (which I bought new) with the same engine. The difference is, the hoses on the Astro started to leak as in most cases and we were able to replace them. A catastrophic failue as with my Blazer is the way these hoses go. Any body else out there have a similar story? Similar Products Used: . 1995 Chevy Astro (great vehicle) . 2002 Chevy Astro (I''ll let you know) |

M1009 CUCV (Blazer)
Strength:
Strength and reliability. I drove more than 2000 miles across the country with a wrecked transmission and injector pump, and the old girl just kept on trucking. Power - (though an aftermarket turbo might not hurt for more accelaration) The M1009 has tons of torque and the most beautiful growling engine noises. Gas Mileage - Yup, I said "Gas Mileage" is a strength... I commonly get 20-22 miles per gallon in a (more than) full size SUV. Attention getting - children playing on sidewalks run to their mothers when this truck comes driving by. It''s big, it''s loud, and it''s made to go to war....
Weakness:
Some of the parts are hard to find (military specific, or are off other larger GM trucks). Also, the excellent military maintenance manuals are great to use, but they never specify what the parts are (only national stock numbers). This truck is easy to work on, but identifying replacement parts can be a frustrating experience. Several months ago I purchased a worn-out, tired, leaking, 1986 Chevy Blazer in the military M1009 CUCV version. Having worked on the M1009 as a mechanic in the army, I knew the capabilities of these machines, and had always wanted to own one of my own. However, I had truly forgotten how much of an incredible ''beast'' these trucks are. With a 6.2 diesel engine (with heavy duty headers for more power) and a ''federal'' emissions package (read "no emissions") this truck has all the power a person could want. I have rebuilt the transfer case, transmission, and injector pump, and with 156000 miles, she drives like she''s brand new! Parts are fairly easy to come by, and if a person is a smart shopper, they can be had very inexpensively. The M1009 is heavily modified from the ''normal'' Blazer; in addition to the engine upgrade, it has a 24volt twin battery starting system, twin generators, 3/4 chassis, 10 bolt corp axles, limited slip diff, night-time driving lights, a gigantic pintle hitch, brush guard - even a convenient holder for two M16 rifles! Similar Products Used: Isuzu Trooper and pickup - too small, a dime a dozen (and worth about 10 cents off-road). A 1976 and 1980 Full size, crew cab 4X4 Chevy work trucks (350 and 400 engines). OVERALL DESIGN IS GREAT,LOTS OF ROOM,RIDES WELL
Weakness:
DOESNT HAVE THE ACCELERATION LIKE A CAR DOES BUT THAT IS TO BE EXPECTED WE ARE DELIGHTED WITH OUR BLAZER SO FAR. THE WEEK WE BOUGHT IT,IT SNOWED AND WE USED THE VEHICLE IN 4 WHEEL DRIVE TO GO EVERYWHERE WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM.GAS MILAGE IS NOT AS BAD AS WE THOUGHT AND IT RIDES EXTREMELY WELL. ONLY PROBLEM WE HAD WAS WITH THE MULTIFUNCTION LIGHT SWITCH WHICH WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY AND SEEMS TO BE WORKING FINE AT THIS TIME |

Blazer LS 2D 4WD
Strength:
Good view of the road ahead, large mirrors on the sides provide good view to the side and behind. Full-size spare standard instead of a donut. Autotrac 4WD makes bad weather a breeze. Rear seats fold flat for tons of room. Touring suspension provides better ride than all but luxury vehicles. Heat comes on quick even in cold weather.
Weakness:
Can''t see out the back window because of the outside spare. The rear wiper only clears the view of the tire. This isn''t a real big deal because the side mirrors provide views behind you. The dark windows and their shape make it difficult sometimes to check the blind spots, although the mirrors cover that if used correctly. Even with heat or cool turned off, it still blows into the vehicle, although this is the case with most vehicles. It does blow quite a bit in Chevy SUV''s and trucks though. No problems whatsoever with this SUV. Handles snow, wet roads, off-road, and anything else you throw at it. If you haven''t driven an SUV before, you need to remember that it''s not a car, so don''t expect it to ride like one. As far the GM/Chevrolet brand goes, it''s the top auto company in the world for a reason. I have no problem with Chrysler/Dodge either, but Ford? Anybody who''s paid attention the last couple of years knows that Ford is the toilet of the auto industry. After spending a year in a legal battle with Ford JUST TO FORCE THEM TO HONOR THEIR WARRANTY (we won, by the way), we''ll never consider them again. This is a great deal if you get it during rebate season and have a trade-in. If you''re buying through GMAC, always lease if given the choice. The financing to purchase will burn a hole in your checkbook. A note on GM quality: my uncle has a 1985 Blazer with close to 700,000 miles on it. There''s no rust, and it runs fine. If you want a long term vehicle, the Blazer is it. Similar Products Used: Suburban, older Blazer, Cherokee, S-10 ZR2 |
